With over 20 years of experience, double board certified plastic and reconstructive surgeon Dr. David Whiteman of Southern Plastic Surgery, P.C. has a special interest in breast cancer awareness and performing breast reconstruction. With October marking Breast Cancer Awareness Month and BRA (Breast Reconstruction Awareness) Day, Dr. Whiteman understands the importance breast reconstruction can have during a patient’s healing process and takes great pride in educating his post-mastectomy patients on their various treatment options for breast reconstruction.

Breast Reconstruction Awareness

Beginning as an initiative to promote breast reconstruction awareness, BRA Day’s 2013 theme is a “team approach” to breast cancer care. By promoting the collaboration of breast cancer care physicians including oncologists, gynecologists, radiologists and plastic surgeons, patients are guided through their options from the time of their diagnosis to breast reconstruction following a mastectomy. Dr. Whiteman meets with each breast cancer patient to create the best treatment plan tailored for their unique case, as each patient experiences different conditions that can affect their reconstruction treatment.

Breast reconstruction can be performed immediately at the same time as a mastectomy or delayed several months or even years after cancer treatment has been completed. Reconstructing the breast can be done through the surgical insertion of a silicone or saline breast implant or with the flap method, which uses the patient’s own muscle, fat and tissue to rebuild a new breast mound. During consultation, Dr. Whiteman evaluates the breast and determines which reconstruction method will provide his patients with the most natural-looking breasts based on their needs and aesthetic goals. For patients who develop breast cancer in only one breast, Dr. Whiteman can perform additional breast procedures such as breast lift or breast reduction for the other breast to provide an overall more symmetric look and feel.

Educating patients on the many facets of breast reconstruction is of utmost importance to Dr. Whiteman as it can improve his patients’ self-esteem and overall quality of life following their breast cancer journey.
