Dr-WhitemanEvery patient’s plastic surgery experience is different and expectations will vary from person to person. However, as a double board-certified plastic surgeon of many years, I understand just how important it is to help my patients establish and maintain realistic expectations from their cosmetic procedures. That doesn’t mean that patients should not be excited for fantastic and potentially life-altering results. It just means that it’s critical for patients to understand what their cosmetic procedure is capable of beforehand to avoid any potential miscommunications or disappointments after the fact. With this in mind, I have answered a few questions below about reasonable expectations after breast lift surgery.

Question #1: How long will the results of a breast lift last?

When performed by an experienced, board-certified plastic surgeon, breast lift results are intended to be very long-lasting. However, that does not necessarily mean forever. While the excess skin and tissue removed during the procedure will not come back, certain bodily changes that occur over time as a result of weight fluctuation, pregnancy, sun exposure, and other factors may lead to additional breast sagging. During the breast lift consultation appointment, I always discuss with my patients what they can do to prolong the results of their procedure.

Question #2: Will I have much visible scarring after a breast lift?

Patients will experience some degree of visible scarring after a breast lift, however this should not be a major concern. During a breast lift, I am able to conceal scars in hard to notice locations to help patients. All breast lift scarring will fade with time with the proper post-surgical care. Additionally, I also offer my signature No Vertical Scar breast lift technique that can also be extremely beneficial for patients who are candidates for it.

Question #3: Will a breast lift be covered by insurance?

No. Breast lift surgery is considered cosmetic in nature and unfortunately will not be covered by most health insurance plans. However, I do offer my patients various plastic surgery financing options to help minimize their financial burden if they prefer to opt for this.

I hope these answers cleared up a few misconceptions that some patients may have about breast lift surgery. In my experience, the more that a patient knows and fully understands about their cosmetic procedure, the more satisfied they will be in the long run.
