Over the years, as surgical advancements have been made and societal preferences have changed, the demand for more subtle, natural-looking plastic surgery results has increased. While it’s true that some types of cosmetic procedures like bariatric weight loss surgery can provide significant change to a patient’s body, many patients are not looking for such a dramatic overhaul. Many of the patients I meet are interested in subtle tweaks to their appearance to help offset some of the less flattering effects of aging, weight fluctuation, or other changes that occur over the years. To help demonstrate the amazing results these procedures can have, I have taken some time to answer a few questions about the most popular body contouring surgeries I perform.
The results from liposuction can be extremely long-lasting, but this depends on how you work to maintain your results following surgery. During liposuction, fat cells are removed from pockets of excess fat found on the body. Once these fat cells have been removed they will not return. However, additional weight gain after your procedure can lead to the remaining fat cells in the treated area (as well as fat cells in other areas of the body) to expand, which can negatively affect your results.
Question #2: How much scarring is normal after male breast reduction surgery?
For men who suffer from gynecomastia (a condition that causes male breast enlargement), male breast reduction surgery can help by removing excess glandular breast tissue from the chest area. After male breast reduction, the amount of visible scarring will depend on a number of factors including the amount of fat and breast tissue that is removed during the procedure, as well as the elasticity of the patient’s skin. I do my best to make the smallest incisions possible in hard to see areas to help reduce the amount of visible post-procedure scarring. In my experience, even patients who are more prone to scarring or those who have had larger amounts of fat and breast tissue removed are still extremely satisfied with their breast reduction results.
Question #3: Which is better to help trim the waistline: tummy tuck or liposuction?
The choice between a tummy tuck or liposuction for waist enhancement depends largely on the needs of each patient. Both of these body contouring procedures can help patients achieve a shapelier waistline, but they do so in different ways. A tummy tuck can help flatten your abdomen by removing excess skin and fat are from the abdomen and tightening the abdominal muscles. My signature Scarpa fascia tummy tuck method is perfect for female patients who want to reduce the appearance of their belly “pooch” and other post-pregnancy effects and create a shapelier waistline. Additionally, liposuction can be a great way to precisely reduce unwanted fat from the waist area that cannot be treated with diet and exercise alone. These procedures are commonly combined for even more comprehensive aesthetic results
