Changes that occur in the years after breast augmentation can affect the way a woman feels about the appearance of her breasts. Even patients who are extremely happy with the results of their procedure can have a change of heart over time due to a wide variety of factors including weight fluctuation, change in aesthetic preferences, aging, or potential (although rare) complications with their implants. While it’s true that breast implants are very safe and durable, they are not designed to last forever.
For anyone who desires a change to their breasts after undergoing breast enlargement, I offer breast revision surgery. Breast revision can help alter the results of a past breast augmentation to help women achieve (or re-achieve) a better-looking, more proportional breast contour. For anyone who is curious about breast revision, but isn’t quite sure if it is the right choice for your specific needs, I have answered some common questions about which patients can benefit from this excellent cosmetic procedure.
What are the Most Common Complications that Lead to Breast Revision?
Breast revision is commonly preferred by patients who experience post-surgery breast implant complications like capsular contracture, implant rippling, or implant displacement. However, it’s important to remember that these complications are still considered very rare for those who follow their plastic surgeon’s post-procedure instructions closely and make an effort to maintain their results.
Is Breast Revision Surgery Only for Patients Who Experience Complications?
No. Some women choose to pursue breast revision as a personal preference that has nothing to do with health concerns or complications with their current implants. It’s not uncommon for someone to simply decide that she no longer desires implants or to prefer a different size implant than what she currently has. Regardless of the patient’s reason for choosing breast revision, the procedure can bring tremendous assistance for anyone dissatisfied with their breast implants following breast augmentation.
During Breast Revision, Are Implants Removed or Replaced?
During breast revision, the original breast implants can either be removed or replaced, depending on the patient’s specific situation and preference. I will say that breast implant replacement is the far more common option, but this is something you will discuss with your surgeon during a breast revision consultation. Some patients undergo a breast lift at the same time as their breast revision to help improve the firmness and positioning of their breasts.
The goal of every breast augmentation procedure is to help the patient achieve the rejuvenated, natural-looking breast contour they deserve. If for whatever reason you’re not 100% satisfied with the results of your surgery, I highly recommend speaking with a board-certified plastic surgeon about breast revision.
