In my nineteen years as a plastic surgeon, I’ve discovered patients often pursue plastic surgery without knowing exactly what they need. With so many different plastic surgery procedures and variations of those procedures, it can be very overwhelming. That’s why I take time during patient consultations to listen to a patient’s concerns and explain their surgical options. I also try to help educate patients by offering information through my blog and social media. Since many women often inquire about which cosmetic breast procedure would meet their needs, I wanted to explain the diverse breast procedures available.
Breast augmentation surgery, the most popular cosmetic procedure in the US according to statistics from the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, involves the insertion of a breast implant to add volume to the breasts. Breast augmentation is the perfect option for women who desire larger breasts. Patients can choose the size of their implants, material (saline or silicone), shape (round or teardrop), and texture (textured or smooth). During a plastic surgery consultation, I will explain all of these options and offer recommendations based on the patient’s desires.
We will also discuss placement of incisions as well as placement of the breast implants (above or beneath pectoral muscles). Patients who have had breast augmentation surgery in the past and experienced complications, wish to exchange their implants for a different size, or just aren’t satisfied with results from their previous surgeon can benefit from breast revision surgery. I’ve recently started offering an additional technique for breast enlargement using fat injections, which involves using liposuction to remove excess fat from an area of the body, purifying the fat, and then injecting the fat into the breast to add volume.
Breast reduction surgery is a procedure designed for women with overly large breasts. Many women with overly large breasts suffer embarrassment along with physical discomfort. In fact, overly large breasts aren’t an issue limited to females as I often perform male breast reduction surgery on patients who suffer from gynecomastia. During breast reduction surgery, excess skin and tissue is removed and breasts are reshaped for a natural looking result.
Breast lift surgery is a procedure designed to repair sagging and drooping. Many variables can cause a woman’s breasts to sag such as weight loss or gain, pregnancy, and age. A typical breast lift surgery involves removing excess skin, repositioning the nipple and breast, and tightening the remaining tissue for a more youthful appearance. If the patient is happy with their breast volume, breast lift surgery can be performed on its own. However, breast lift can be combined with breast augmentation for women who wish to add volume, or it can be combined with breast reduction for women with overly large or sagging breasts.
