  • The Link Between Obesity and Breast Cancer

According to the American Cancer Society, more than 1 million women world-wide are diagnosed with breast cancer each year. Breast cancer risk factors span from those that are not easily treated such as age and family history, to those that may be easily minimized by leading a healthy lifestyle. Though there are multiple factors that can contribute to cancer risk, body weight proves to have the strongest evidence linking it to cancer. Excess body weight contributes to as many as 1 out of 5 of all cancer-related deaths.

The study also found that women over the age of 18 who gained 60 or more pounds had double the risk of being diagnosed with post-menopausal breast cancer compared to women who lived physically active lives and had a lower body mass index.

Reaching an appropriate, healthy weight can often be challenging. However, it is important to maintain positive lifestyle habits to not only prevent your risk of life-threatening illnesses, but is also essential to maintaining plastic surgery results. While I do perform body contouring procedures such as liposuction, tummy tuck, and mommy makeover surgery to help patients achieve a slimmer, thinner contour, plastic surgery should not be a “quick-fix” but rather assist you in achieving your goals. I always promise that I will do my part to meet your desired cosmetic goals, but also place the utmost importance that you do your part to preserve a successful procedure outcome.

If you’re looking to make the first steps towards healthy lifestyle changes, our in-house NESTA Weight Management Specialist, Jackie Madison is here to help. With the Lifestyle & Weight Management program, Jackie will help coach you through your pre and post-surgery transition by teaching you how to commit to an active lifestyle, achieve weight loss and weight management goals, provide effective eating habits, manage your time, assist with battling stress and more.

    Utilizing Diverse Techniques in Liposuction

One of the most popular body contouring procedures for both men and women is liposuction. According to the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS), in 2013, 312,176 women and 51,736 men received liposuction. I frequently discuss liposuction with patients who are looking to eliminate excess body fat. Liposuction is not only performed as an individual treatment for fat reduction, but it is also applied in various cosmetic procedures including mommy makeover surgery, tummy tuck, facial plastic surgery, and buttock augmentation. In order to give you that coveted, aesthetically pleasing figure you dream of, I utilize the most advanced liposuction techniques available to provide you with optimal results.

Liposuctionatlanta-liposuction-results (2) is recommended for patients who would like to remove small pockets of fat that do not respond to various amounts of working out and healthy eating. Remember that there is no such thing as a “perfect” body and imperfections are what make each individual unique. Whatever your “problem areas” are, liposuction addresses areas such as the abdomen, love handles, thighs, buttocks, and hips.

Depending on your cosmetic goals, we will determine which liposuction technique (tumescent, super-wet, power-assisted, or ultrasound-assisted) will best fit your needs during your initial consultation. Tumescent and super-wet liposuction techniques use a solution of tumescent fluid (saline solution and anesthetic) to be injected into the treatment areas to facilitate removal of fat and minimize blood loss. Super-wet liposuction uses slightly less solution for injection and is beneficial for patients as there is minimal blood loss and swelling. The power-assisted liposuction technique incorporates a special suction tube that vibrates during the procedure. The vibration loosens fat to allow for easier removal with less damage to the surrounding skin.  Ultrasound-assisted liposuction uses sound waves in addition to fluid injection to liquefy fat and is effective for areas that require precision such as the face.

If you need assistance, our in-house NESTA Weight Management Specialist, Jackie Madison, provides a Lifestyle & Weight Management program in which patients are coached through their pre and post-surgery time period to help achieve weight loss and weight management goals through exercise and effective eating habits. Our outside ACE Certified Personal Trainer Daryl Madison of Lifestyle Fitness can also help find a routine that works best for you.

While liposuction and other body contouring procedures can help you achieve personal cosmetic surgery goals, it’s important to remember it should not be a substitute for leading a healthy lifestyle. I continue to make every effort to communicate all information so that all of my patients completely understand the type of results they can expect, such as final results are always determined by your weight, skin tone and specific Habitus. I advise my post-surgery patients to always maintain proper nutrition and exercise regularly in order to preserve successful results. Solutions to Post-Surgery Scarring

As with any surgical procedure, plastic surgery requires incisions whether you are seeking a breast augmentation, liposuction, tummy tuck, or a facelift; which often results in scarring. For many patients, an array of factors such as incision type, skin type, age, heredity, and even ethnicity can increase the chance of developing scars post-plastic surgery. To address scarring, I offer both topical and oral treatments. I will continue to do my part to meet your desired aesthetic goals, but I also place the utmost importance on pre- and post-surgery care in order to preserve your cosmetic surgery results, minimize scarring, and expedite positive recovery from surgery.

arnika forteTo reduce scarring, I offer the topical treatment, bioCorneum®, which is a patented gel that dries within minutes forming an invisible, breathable, and waterproof silicone barrier over the affected area. This topical gel allows the scar to mature through normal collagen synthesis cycles with twice daily application. Treatment has been shown to smooth scars and reduce discoloration; generally the recommended treatment time for newer scars is at least 60 to 90 days.

bioCorneumAdditionally, I also offer Arnika Forte™, which is an oral homeopathic pill that may be taken prior to your surgery to reduce bruising and swelling while promoting recovery.  This natural formula, containing a combination of Arnica Montana, Bromelain, Bioflavanoids, and Vitamin C, should be taken a couple days prior to your surgery and continued for several days in order to optimize cosmetic surgery results.

If you’ve undergone facial plastic surgery, I recommend any of the skincare products we carry at our office or skin treatments such as chemical peels and laser skin resurfacing at Laser Lights Cosmetic Center, which can help to improve your skin’s appearance and texture as well as assist with healing and scarring from surgery.
