Breast augmentation is not a one-size fits all procedure. Deciding to undergo breast augmentation surgery is only the beginning. There are a number of factors to consider when determining how breast enhancement can improve a patient’s breasts and help them attain the look they desire. I’ve outlined four main factors that patients of mine have found helpful when deciding which implant options will give them the most natural-looking breast augmentation results.

Breast Augmentation Factors to ConsiderTYPE

A patient must determine which of two types of implants they would like to receive: silicone or saline. This is purely a matter of personal preference. Silicone implants create a natural appearance and for many patients are less likely to fold or ripple along the lower edge or side of the breast. Some women prefer saline implants as the size can be adjusted during surgery by injecting or removing saline fluid. Silicone implants, in comparison, are more form stable and cannot be altered once they have been placed in the body – unless the patient choose a breast revision to swap out implants.

SIZE

Determining the size of your preferred implants is one of the most important decisions patients make. Larger-sized breast implants have been a common norm in recent history, but new trends show that patients are electing for smaller enhancements. It’s an ever-changing trend but overall, many women prefer a fit that flatters their overall body type and creates a natural look that isn’t overly exaggerated. Regardless, it all boils down to being a matter of the patient’s personal choice and aesthetic goals.

SHAPE

During consultations are when patients also decide on whether round or shaped implants are preferred. Round breast implants are typically known for providing ample lift with the ability to make breasts appear full and shapely. Also, since round implants have a consistently circular shape, there is less chance of the implant rotating out of position. With that said, the other population of women choose shaped implants for the subtle, natural-looking results they produce thanks to their thicker base which is designed to more accurately recreate the contours of a natural female breast.

TEXTURE

A patient will also decide between smooth and textured implants. Some women prefer smooth breast implants due to them being soft to the touch. Since smooth implants can move and shift within the breast implant pocket, they are able to provide natural-looking movement within the chest. Textured implants allow healing tissue to stick to the implant, making it less likely that the implant will shift inside the breast and become repositioned.

With these factors in mind, it’s essential for patients to take the time and do the research necessary to determine which approach will best enable them to achieve the look that will make them happiest with their results. Take your time to fully explore your options and use the consultation appointment to physically try on implants, discuss your preferences candidly, and ask any questions needed to make a sound decision.
