What would you do if you woke up one morning and decided you were unhappy with the results of a previous breast augmentation procedure? Whether because of natural body changes or implant complications, it is important to know that there are options such as breast revision surgery to attain your desired look. At Southern Plastic Surgery, double-board certified cosmetic and plastic surgeon Dr. David Whiteman understands patient’s motivations for breast revision procedures and works with each patient to tailor a plan that uniquely suits their needs.
There are many contributing factors that would prompt you to consider a breast revision procedure. Although breast implant complications are less likely to occur with proper after-care attention, breast revision surgery is available to repair related complications: deflation, leaking, shifting and capsular contracture (tightening of the scar tissue around the implant). In cases where the implant has to be removed, the same or similar incision to the original is made to minimize further scarring on the breasts. The implant is replaced and any scar tissue that may have developed around the implant is removed before a new implant is put into place.
On the other hand, some women may decide on breast revision surgery because they are unhappy with the size or shape of the original implants. In certain cases, it may be recommended by your surgeon to combine other procedures with breast revision, such as a breast lift, to reposition breasts to a more youthful position. The decision to go a size bigger, smaller, completely remove previous implants or to correct natural changes that occur to the breasts over time are great examples for electing breast revision procedures. Commonly after pregnancy, or in cases of weight loss and/or gain, the breast tissue may change shape or lose volume due to skin stretching over time, requiring procedures in conjunction with breast revision. In cases of women who have had mastectomies, breast reconstruction may be an additional option to breast revision.
