In today’s society, there is much emphasis placed on one’s physical appearance. Social media has made an influential impact on the way we look and it always circles back to “we all want what we can’t have.” Different plastic surgery trends arise every day—one day women are opting for larger breasts and bigger derrières the next. According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), in 2013, there were 9,993 buttock augmentation procedures performed with a 16% increase since 2012.
This increasing popularity in buttock enhancement stems from a variety of influences; mainly from popular Hollywood starlets with a large presence on social media and television such as Jennifer Lopez, Nicki Minaj, Iggy Azalea, or the Kardashian sisters. This infatuation with an individual’s backside is not only seen in the tabloids, but now it’s commonly heard in lyrics and seen in music videos as well. Nowadays, most female patients desire similar, more contoured figures not just in the waist and hips but also the buttocks. In order to achieve this look, I perform buttock augmentation, also known as Brazilian butt lift, for patients wishing to enhance the size and curve of their buttocks.
Brazilian butt lift is commonly performed through a fat transfer process to enhance the shape of the buttocks. The injections consist of your own fat from other areas obtained through liposuction around the buttocks, thighs, hips, or abdomen. The donated fat is then purified and re-injected into predetermined areas on your buttocks. By using your own fat, it allows me to sculpt the injected fat into a more naturally prominent posterior. I prefer using the fat transfer technique for butt augmentation as it significantly decreases the risk of complication that can be associated with the introduction of a foreign object into the body, such as butt implants.
During your consultation, I will assess the amount of donated fat needed, the desired sites where the injections will go, as well as the number and depth of the injections when determining your desired cosmetic goals. Despite media influences, it is my responsibility as your double board-certified plastic surgeon to understand and achieve your wants and needs.
