Tips for Keeping Your New Year’s Resolutions for 2015

As we say goodbye to 2014, it is that time of year to say hello to our New Year’s Resolutions. While many of us make big promises for the upcoming year, it becomes increasingly difficult to keep these promises to ourselves in the midst of our busy lives. Not unexpectedly, we often forget or give up within the first few weeks, if not sooner. So how do you stick to your 2015 resolutions? Southern Plastic Surgery, P.C. offers the following tips:

  • Tips-for-Keeping-Your-New-Years-Resolutions-for-2015Be realistic!You know what you are and are not capable of. While you may like to push yourself, be aware of what is realistically possible with your other responsibilities.
  • Make your goals manageable. You may have big dreams in mind for 2015, but make sure to break up this huge goal into realistic and manageable steps or benchmarks. For example, if you are trying to lose 30 pounds, break it down to working out 5 times a week or losing 8 pounds in the first 2 months.

  • Seek support.It is much easier to complete a goal if you have the support of a friend or loved one. They can offer encouragement or give you motivation to keep going. Team up with a buddy and track your progress together, and you will more likely see success. Besides friends, there are tons of mobile apps out there to help you out with tips on how to achieve specific goals while also tracking them.
  • Know it is okay to make some mistakes.People who experience a setback in their initial goal have a tendency to just give up and throw the entire goal out of the window. Just because you go on one vacation and spend more money than you should, doesn’t mean you should throw out your resolution to spend less money this year.
  • Tell people about it. If you announce your resolution to people other than yourself, you will feel more accountable in fulfilling it. Tell your friends, post it on your blog or Facebook, or join a support group. If you keep your resolution a secret, no one will know if you don’t succeed – giving you less motivation.
  • Don’t get discouraged.If 2015 comes around and you haven’t exactly lived up to your own 2014 expectations, use that as a learning experience and try again. You may need a more realistic goal or just some more motivation.

Plastic Surgery Myths & Facts

There are often a variety of misconceptions associated with plastic surgery that are simply untrue. These skewed perceptions are often derived from photos of celebrities that have had “botched” surgeries or just from word-of-mouth which often raises much concern for patients who are interested in undergoing surgery. Regardless of the type of procedure you decide to have, I believe it is important for my patients to be knowledgeable about potential risks and benefits of plastic surgery and to maintain realistic expectations. In order to ease any apprehensions you may have, I have deciphered a few common plastic surgery myths:

Plastic Surgery Myths and FactsMYTH: Plastic surgery is only for women
FACT: Over the last ten years, the once female-predominant field of plastic surgery has become more acceptable and more common for men to consider and undergo. For a variety of motivations such as staying competitive with younger applicants in today’s job market or to improve overall self-esteem, the number of cosmetic plastic surgery procedures among men continues to gain popularity.  Popular procedures for men include eyelid surgery, liposuction, and neck lifts. Even so, there are some procedures for males that are exclusive to them – the treatment for gynecomastia is one such example.

Gynecomastia is a medical term that comes from a Greek phrase meaning “woman-like breasts,” and is a common condition for an estimated 40 to 60 percent of men. Gynecomastia occurs when there is a hormone imbalance of estrogen and testosterone and can transpire in one or both breasts and can even leave breasts noticeably uneven.  Caused by heredity, disease or hormonal changes, the breast glands can increase to an unusually large size. In order to address such concerns, I perform breast reduction surgery to eliminate excess fat, glandular tissue and skin.

MYTH: Liposuction and tummy tuck surgery is a substitute for exercising and eating healthy
FACT: While liposuction, abdominoplasty, and other body contouring procedures can help you achieve personal cosmetic surgery goals, it is important to remember it should not be a substitute for weight loss or a healthy lifestyle. Post-surgery, I advise my patients to maintain proper nutrition and exercise regularly in order to preserve positive body contouring results.

Choosing a board certified plastic surgeon is the most important step when deciding on surgery. Your surgeon should be a fully trained and board-certified plastic surgeon with many years of experience performing different procedures; just as importantly, he or she must take the time to listen to and fully understand your individual goals and desires. What Causes Aging?

There are multiple factors that can contribute to the aging process including toxins, sun exposure, stress, nutrition, and gravity, which all cause the deterioration of the suppleness of our skin. Though I perform various facial plastic surgery procedures including facelift, mini facelift, and blepharoplasty, I continue to remind patients that it is important to keep realistic expectations and understand that plastic surgery does not slow down the body’s natural aging process. In addition to surgery, there are also everyday regimens that can all help aid in prevention.

breast implantsIn an article on U.S. News “Fight These 4 Causes of Aging,” nutritionist and author of The Most Effective Ways to Live Longer, Jonny Bowden declares that we indeed can control the rate at which the signs of aging appear. According the Bowden, 5 to 20 percent of aging derives from genetics and the rest are caused by diet and lifestyle choices.

By exposing yourself to free radicals such as trans fats, cigarettes, overcooked meats, or fruits containing pesticides and herbicides, you’re speeding up the aging process as they contain chemically unstable molecules which attack our cells and harm our DNA. Inflammation plays a vital part in many diseases of aging such as cancer, heart disease, diabetes, and Alzheimer’s which is caused by the immune system attacking healthy cells and tissues. Engaging in daily physical activity and consuming anti-inflammatory foods such as whole grains, salmon, vegetables, nuts, avocados, or dark chocolate can aid in reducing your chances of having a heart attack. Excessive sugar intake can also increase your risk of heart disease and diabetes as the sugar collects, causing blood to not smoothly run through capillaries and into vital organs.

Stress is a large contributing factor to the aging process as it causes the release of multiple stress hormones that heighten your blood pressure. It is known that stress is one of the leading causes of weight gain and noticeable signs of aging. One of the best ways to minimize stress is by making sure to get the recommended 6-8 hours of uninterrupted rest. When we sleep, our bodies go into “repair-mode” to mend the damage from daily activities by replacing old cells and stimulating new skin cell growth.  When our bodies are not able to get enough rest, they become stressed and release increased amounts of the hormone cortisol. An increase in cortisol can affect the skin’s collagen production, which is beneficial in preserving the skin’s elasticity, and can lead to the formation of wrinkles and fine lines.
