The Link Between Obesity and Breast Cancer

According to the American Cancer Society, more than 1 million women world-wide are diagnosed with breast cancer each year. Breast cancer risk factors span from those that are not easily treated such as age and family history, to those that may be easily minimized by leading a healthy lifestyle. Though there are multiple factors that can contribute to cancer risk, body weight proves to have the strongest evidence linking it to cancer. Excess body weight contributes to as many as 1 out of 5 of all cancer-related deaths.

The study also found that women over the age of 18 who gained 60 or more pounds had double the risk of being diagnosed with post-menopausal breast cancer compared to women who lived physically active lives and had a lower body mass index.

Reaching an appropriate, healthy weight can often be challenging. However, it is important to maintain positive lifestyle habits to not only prevent your risk of life-threatening illnesses, but is also essential to maintaining plastic surgery results. While I do perform body contouring procedures such as liposuction, tummy tuck, and mommy makeover surgery to help patients achieve a slimmer, thinner contour, plastic surgery should not be a “quick-fix” but rather assist you in achieving your goals. I always promise that I will do my part to meet your desired cosmetic goals, but also place the utmost importance that you do your part to preserve a successful procedure outcome.

If you’re looking to make the first steps towards healthy lifestyle changes, our in-house NESTA Weight Management Specialist, Jackie Madison is here to help. With the Lifestyle & Weight Management program, Jackie will help coach you through your pre and post-surgery transition by teaching you how to commit to an active lifestyle, achieve weight loss and weight management goals, provide effective eating habits, manage your time, assist with battling stress and more.

Building Awareness and Education for Breast Reconstruction Options

October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month and October 16th marked BRA Day, or Breast Reconstruction Awareness Day, celebrating raising awareness and education on post-mastectomy breast reconstruction options. Studies published by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) show that less than 23 percent of women know the wide range of options available to them. As a double board certified plastic and reconstructive surgeon with over 20 years of experience, Dr. David Whiteman understands the effects of breast cancer and actively educates his patients about reconstruction options to help them on their journey to healing.

Atlanta Breast Reconstruction Awareness Day 2012Breast reconstruction can be performed immediately after a mastectomy or lumpectomy or delayed until all cancer treatment is completed or when the patient is ready. During consultation, Dr. Whiteman examines the remaining breast tissue, skin, and muscles to determine proper treatment plans to achieve natural-looking results for each patient. A breast reconstruction treatment plan is unique to the patient’s individual situation, condition, and aesthetic goals so Dr. Whiteman ensures to discuss all options and procedural steps. Cosmetic breast procedures such as breast lift or a breast augmentation if only one breast is affected can also be performed to improve symmetry.

Depending on the amount of healthy breast tissue remaining, Dr. Whiteman may use a breast implant to restore volume and shape. If there is not enough tissue to support an implant, a tissue expander can be used to make room for an implant. Another option is flap reconstruction which includes harvesting healthy tissue, skin, muscle, and fat from another area of the body to rebuild the breast mound. The nipple and areola can also be rebuilt through cosmetic tattooing.

To further celebrate Breast Cancer Awareness, Dr. Whiteman encourages you to get involved with The Sport of Giving, a 501(c)(3) grassroots organization supporting women’s cancer care and prevention with special fundraiser events. Dr. Whiteman has also founded Life After the Fight, a business listing to promote professional aspirations of breast cancer survivors.

Breast Reconstruction Techniques at Southern Plastic Surgery

Life after breast cancer affects each and every patient differently. Double board-certified plastic and reconstructive surgeon Dr. David Whiteman believes it’s imperative to discuss all breast reconstruction options with his patients as each case is unique and requires specific treatment plans.Breast Reconstruction Atlanta GA

Breast reconstruction surgery can be done immediately following a mastectomy or lumpectomy or at a later time after cancer has been removed when a patient is physically and emotionally ready. Dr. Whiteman uses the most advanced technology to provide his breast reconstruction patients with natural-looking results that restores their confidence.  During a comprehensive in-office consultation, Dr. Whiteman will examine the breast(s), muscle, tissues, and skin around the breast to determine which reconstructive technique would best benefit the patient.

If there is enough extra tissue and skin from other areas of the body such as the back or shoulder, then Dr. Whiteman may recommend a flap reconstruction method which rebuilds the breast using the patient’s own tissue.  If there is not adequate tissue for flap reconstruction, then a breast implant may be used.  A tissue expander, or balloon-like device, can be inserted under the skin to allow sufficient room for placement of the implant. The nipple and areola can also be rebuilt with cosmetic tattooing.

Additional breast procedures such as breast lift or breast reduction can also be simultaneously performed during breast reconstruction to improve overall aesthetics of the breasts.
