7 Anti-Aging Foods with Benefits

When you see commercials on TV for products that claim “you’ll see a more youthful appearance in just weeks,” you may be tempted to fall into the trap, but what if you could turn back the clock with just taking a bite out of some of your favorite grocery items?  Dr. David Whiteman always encourages his patients to maintain a pro-active healthy lifestyle and by giving your body the nutrients it needs, you will begin to see a difference in your complexion and according to Huffington Post, these seven foods can help do the trick:anti-aging-foods-health-advice

  • Berries: Whether you’re grabbing a handful of fresh strawberries, blueberries, or raspberries, each contain antioxidants and an excellent source of Vitamin C that promotes healthy cells and help to fight against diseases such as cancer or diabetes.
  • Oranges: Packed with Vitamin C, which helps boost your immune system, oranges contain natural anti-oxidants which help eliminate the toxins throughout your body that cause wrinkles, age spots, and dry skin.
  • Sweet Potatoes: Sweet potatoes contain Vitamin C, copper, Biotin, Vitamin B2, Vitamin B6 and fiber which are beneficial in diminishing the appearance of wrinkles and improves skin texture. Incorporating foods with vitamin-rich qualities is just as beneficial as maintaining your skincare regimen.
  • Carrots: Just one carrot is packed with beta carotene which helps to prevent illnesses, disease and most importantly, aging. The vegetable also contains Vitamin A which gives you a healthy scalp and brings shine to your hair.
  • Broccoli: Containing a chemical called “sulforaphane,” broccoli prevents free radicals from causing you to age and also helps to fight cardiovascular disease, joint diseases and diabetes.
  • Avocado: Avocados contain biotin which can aide in healthy skin and contain specific amino acids and anti-oxidants that reduce age spots, inflammation and heals injuries. It’s important to remember that allowing yourself to properly heal can maximize your plastic surgery results.
  • Plain Low-Fat Greek Yogurt: Yogurt offers calcium and protein, which both aide in bone and muscle building, and also boosts teeth enamel and helps with the appearance of wrinkles.

Building Awareness and Education for Breast Reconstruction Options

October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month and October 16th marked BRA Day, or Breast Reconstruction Awareness Day, celebrating raising awareness and education on post-mastectomy breast reconstruction options. Studies published by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) show that less than 23 percent of women know the wide range of options available to them. As a double board certified plastic and reconstructive surgeon with over 20 years of experience, Dr. David Whiteman understands the effects of breast cancer and actively educates his patients about reconstruction options to help them on their journey to healing.

Atlanta Breast Reconstruction Awareness Day 2012Breast reconstruction can be performed immediately after a mastectomy or lumpectomy or delayed until all cancer treatment is completed or when the patient is ready. During consultation, Dr. Whiteman examines the remaining breast tissue, skin, and muscles to determine proper treatment plans to achieve natural-looking results for each patient. A breast reconstruction treatment plan is unique to the patient’s individual situation, condition, and aesthetic goals so Dr. Whiteman ensures to discuss all options and procedural steps. Cosmetic breast procedures such as breast lift or a breast augmentation if only one breast is affected can also be performed to improve symmetry.

Depending on the amount of healthy breast tissue remaining, Dr. Whiteman may use a breast implant to restore volume and shape. If there is not enough tissue to support an implant, a tissue expander can be used to make room for an implant. Another option is flap reconstruction which includes harvesting healthy tissue, skin, muscle, and fat from another area of the body to rebuild the breast mound. The nipple and areola can also be rebuilt through cosmetic tattooing.

To further celebrate Breast Cancer Awareness, Dr. Whiteman encourages you to get involved with The Sport of Giving, a 501(c)(3) grassroots organization supporting women’s cancer care and prevention with special fundraiser events. Dr. Whiteman has also founded Life After the Fight, a business listing to promote professional aspirations of breast cancer survivors.

Who Can Undergo Breast Reduction Surgery?

Many men and women suffer from excessively large breasts that can cause physical issues such as skin irritation, back and neck pain, and/or poor posture. Large, heavy breasts often cause a strain on a patient’s body and limit their ability to participate in physical activities. Patients can also be emotionally affected by self image issues and difficulty finding proper-fitting clothes. Double board certified cosmetic and reconstructive surgeon Dr. David Whiteman often recommends breast reduction surgery to patients who suffer from overly large breasts.

Breast reduction surgery may seem straightforward since its goal is to remove excess fat, skin, and tissue contributing to macromastia, or overly large breasts. However, there are various techniques for breast reduction surgery, depending on the patient’s needs. Not only do women undergo this procedure, but men can also suffer from a condition called gynecomastia, or large male breasts. In order to obtain a more masculine appearance, Dr. Whiteman employs a different technique in male breast reduction surgery. Patients who have also had post bariatric surgery or experienced significant weight loss may choose breast lift surgery to remove excess, drooping skin.

Female breast reduction includes a surgical incision to remove fat and tissue from the breast mound. Dr. Whiteman will also remove excess skin to provide a more proportional result. Often, female patients choose to have breast lift surgery in addition to a reduction to reposition their new, smaller breasts to a more youthful location. In male breast reduction surgery, Dr. Whiteman removes fat and tissue through both liposuction and excision. For men, the goal is to yield a smoother, flatter chest.

For post bariatric patients, excess skin is typically the main concern since massive weight loss often leaves patients with inelastic, stretched skin. Like most post bariatric procedures such as a tummy tuck or thigh lift, Dr. Whiteman uses liposuction to eliminate small areas of residual fat and then tightens the area by removing excess skin. It is especially important for the patient to maintain a healthy weight since weight change can reverse results.
