Facelift FAQs

While there is no “fountain of youth” to completely restore our teenage appearance or keep it that way, facelift surgery, also known as rhytidectomy, is one of many facial plastic surgery procedures that can help combat the effects of the passage of time and help keep you looking as young as you feel. According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), over 133,000 facelift procedures were performed in 2013. In order to ease any apprehensions you may have, I have broken down the top common questions patients typically ask me before/after undergoing facelift surgery:

atlanta-facelift-surgery-resultsQ: Who is a candidate for facelift surgery?
A: Facelift surgery can be performed on specific areas of the face for patients with moderate to minimal signs of aging such as lax skin, or deep wrinkles and fine lines. Ideally, candidates should be healthy individuals who do not have past or present medical conditions that can impair healing and maintain a positive outlook and realistic expectations about his/her procedure.

Q: What areas of the face can be treated with a facelift?
A: There are multiple factors that can contribute to the aging process including pollutants, sun exposure, and gravity, which all aid in deteriorating the suppleness of our skin. Particularly useful for eliminating excess skin around the cheeks, jowls, and neck, facelift surgery can create a younger looking face with a more defined jaw line. Patients who are only concerned with specific isolated areas of the face such as the neck, jowls, or mid-face may opt for a mini-facelift.

Q: How is facelift surgery performed?
A: During a facelift procedure, I remove excess and sagging skin and re-tighten or reposition muscle and tissue to refill areas of lost volume and smooth wrinkles. A full facelift could also include a neck lift which restores the neck line, jawline, and removes turkey neck.

A mini-facelift, also known as a “weekend procedure” because of the minimal downtime required, reduces wrinkles and sagging skin by making smaller, hidden incisions without affecting the brow and eye areas.

Q: What aftercare is required following my facelift surgery?
A: Following your surgery, a bandage may be placed around your face to minimize swelling and bruising once your procedure is completed and will be worn for several days. Thin tubes may also be inserted to drain any excess blood or fluid that may accumulate under the skin. I will provide you with specific instructions on how to take care of the surgical site, suggest medications to aid in the healing process, when to make your follow-up appointments, and advise on engaging in physical activity and preserving proper nutrition.

Q: What other cosmetic procedures do you perform for facial rejuvenation?
A: Many patients do not realize that there are various surgical and non-surgical options in addition to traditional facelift surgery to meet their unique concerns. Facial procedures such as a browlift, blepharoplasty, and neck lift can also significantly revitalize your appearance.

Patients with minor skin concerns and moderate to minimal wrinkling can benefit from non-surgical treatments such as laser resurfacing. Cosmetic injectables like BOTOX® smooth out wrinkles caused by expression on the forehead and near the eyes. Juvéderm® and Restylane® facial fillers restore lost volume in areas of the cheeks, nasolabial folds, and lips. Since these procedures are non-surgical, patients can benefit from minimal to no downtime and shorter treatment times as injections typically take 10-20 minutes to complete.

I remind my patients that though these procedures can restore a more youthful appearance, it is important to keep realistic expectations and understand that plastic surgery does not slow down the body’s natural aging process. In addition to surgery, maintaining a healthy lifestyle, limiting UV exposure, and using sunscreen faithfully can all help aid in prevention.

Revive Your Appearance with Facial Plastic Surgery

Most patients often opt for facial plastic surgery to reduce the signs of aging that appear in the form of wrinkles, fine lines, hooded eyes, and sagging skin. Though facial procedures such as a facelift, browlift, blepharoplasty, and neck lift can significantly rejuvenate your appearance, I remind my patients to maintain realistic expectations and understand that plastic surgery ultimately does not slow down the body’s natural aging process.

Rhinoplasty FAQs

According to a study conducted by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), rhinoplasty (nose surgery) was the second most popular facial cosmetic procedure in 2013 with 221,053 procedures performed. A delicate blend of artistry and science, rhinoplasty requires a keen eye and a thorough knowledge of the physiology of the human body. For over 20 years, I’ve placed much importance on achieving long-lasting, natural results tailored to each patient’s aesthetic goals. To help patients learn more about the procedure, I have answered a few frequently asked questions:

Q: Am I a candidate for rhinoplasty?

Liposuction-Tummy-Tuck-Discounts-Atlanta-GAA: Rhinoplasty may be performed on a wide variety of ages and ethnic groups. As with any surgery, parental consent is required for all plastic surgery procedures performed on patients under the age of 18. The ideal candidate should be physically and emotionally healthy, a non-smoker, has fully matured, and has realistic expectations about your physical results before undergoing nose surgery. Patients may elect to have rhinoplasty for several reasons. For some individuals it is a necessary surgery to improve breathing difficulties caused by a birth defect or an injury, and for others it is an elective procedure done to enhance the shape or size of the nose. Whatever the motivation, rhinoplasty can significantly correct the appearance of the nose and, as a result, change the way a patient’s entire face is perceived.

Q: How is rhinoplasty performed?

A: In order to produce the most natural, aesthetically-pleasing rhinoplasty results, I utilize a variety of surgical and non-surgical techniques that are tailored to complement the unique traits for each patient. Traditional rhinoplasty entails implementing a closed or open technique. Closed rhinoplasty requires small incisions to be made inside the nose, while open rhinoplasty requires an additional incision to be made to separate the nostrils. With both techniques, the incisions will be hidden within the natural folds of the nose in order to minimize scarring.

For patients seeking a less invasive procedure, facial fillers such as Juvéderm® and Restylane® can be used to restore thinning areas that show wrinkles and fine lines with minimal downtime. Fillers can be injected into the tip, base, or bridge of the nose to restore lost volume and straighten the bridge, which produces a more aesthetically-pleasing rhinoplasty result. Those opting for facial fillers to address the nose will require additional injections as the results are not permanent.

Q: Are customized techniques used during rhinoplasty for patients that come from different ethnic backgrounds?

A: I utilize the “implantless rhinoplasty technique” to achieve the best results tailored to complement the different cultural traits among patients of every ethnic background. As an alternative to using artificial materials or silicone implants, I graft my patient’s own skin, bone, and tissue to augment areas of their nose. Using the patient’s own materials significantly reduces the risk of complications and provides a more natural-looking result. Ethnic patients’ nose structures are all different so implants may be ineffective. For example, Hispanic patients have slightly weaker nasal bridges and African-American patients have more fibrous tissue, which both may not effectively support a facial implant.

Q: What aftercare is required following my nose surgery?

A: Following your surgery, a splint or bandages will be placed on the outside to protect the nose, and will be worn for several days. You may also experience some swelling and bruising which will go down within the first few weeks and most patients are able to return to work in about a week. I will provide you specific instructions on how to take care of the surgical site, suggest medications to aid in the healing process, when to make your follow-up appointments, and advise on engaging in physical activity and preserving proper nutrition. I continue to remind my patients that leading a healthy lifestyle is necessary for overall health, and it is essential to maintaining rhinoplasty results.
