Non-Surgical & Surgical Facial Rejuvenation

Facial rejuvenation treatments come in many forms.  From daily skincare regimens of moisturizer to more entailed cosmetic facial plastic surgery, men and women of all ages and skin types are choosing facial rejuvenation procedures to combat signs of aging in order to revive their youthful appearance.  In fact, according to the 2014 statistics shared by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, facial rejuvenation procedures saw a surge in popularity and remained among the top five in both minimally-invasive and cosmetic surgery procedures:

Plastic Surgery in Atlanta GABotox® – 6.7 million treatments performed

Botox® contains a purified form of botulinum that works by temporarily relaxing the muscles that cause wrinkles between (glabellar lines) and around (crow’s feet) the eyes that form with age and repeated facial and forehead expressions.  As Botox® is injected into the muscle, it is eventually absorbed and eliminated by the body and therefore treatments must be “re-touched” just about every 4-6 months to maintain the same facial rejuvenation results.

Facial Fillers – 2.3 million treatments performed

Like Botox®, facial fillers are cosmetic injectables but are unique in that they are composed of naturally-occurring substances found in the human body that work to restore lost facial volume and smoothes wrinkles and lines.  Facial fillers such as Juvéderm®, Expression®, Perlane®, Radiesse® and Restylane® are great for patients aged 21 and up who have moderate to minimal signs of aging or simply want to help maintain previous plastic surgery results.  Popular areas for facial filler treatments include the cheeks, lips, around the mouth area and jaw line.  Depending on the type of filler you choose, typical results can last anywhere from 6 months up to two years, therefore follow-up treatments are necessary to keep a more youthful appearance.

Blepharoplasty (Eyelid Surgery) – 207,000 procedures performed

As we age, skin loses its elasticity, often causing the upper eyelids to droop and form excess fat deposits underneath the eyes on the lower eyelids.  Blepharoplasty is performed to eliminate those telltale signs of aging on the upper and/or lower eyelids by removing excess fat, tissue and skin around the eyes in order to provide a rested appearance.  Depending on the patient’s particular goals, eyelid surgery can be performed on the upper eyelids (to address the “hooded” appearance from sagging eyelid skin) and/or on the lower eyelids (to target the fatty tissue that creates under eye bags).

Facelift – 128,000 procedures performed

When you’re at the point where you’re looking for longer-lasting facial rejuvenation results, facelift surgery can target moderate to minimal signs of aging such as lax skin, or deep wrinkles and fine lines; particularly helpful for those looking to eliminate excess skin around the cheeks, jowls and neck.  Once I remove excess, sagging skin, I reposition the remaining skin, tissue and muscles (if needed) to fill lost volume and create an overall smoother, wrinkle-free appearance.  There are also those patients who may have specific isolated areas of concern on their face in regards to the neck and jowls and choose to opt for a mini facelift to only rejuvenate and tighten the lower third of the face.

Whichever facial rejuvenation plan we tailor for your unique needs is entirely up to you, however, the first step towards facial rejuvenation is to choose a board-certified plastic surgeon with extensive training in the procedure of your choosing.  When your safety is concerned, it is important to be your biggest advocate and do the research!  If you’d like to meet with me, cosmetic surgeon Dr. David Whiteman, to answer any questions, feel free to schedule a consultation whenever the need arises.  You can also stay connected with Southern Plastic Surgery on Facebook, Twitter and Google+ for plastic surgery news and updates.

Your Cosmetic Surgery Checklist

Before undergoing plastic surgery, I always advise my patients to really think carefully about what you want and why you want it while also maintaining realistic expectations. Regardless if you choose to have a surgical or non-surgical cosmetic procedure, it is important to approach all cosmetic procedures in a safe and judicious way. Take time to evaluate all of your options and not rush the process, no matter how eager you are to have the surgery.

During your initial consultation, I will provide you with all the information you need to make a fully informed decision and put in the time necessary to listen to and fully understand your individual goals and desires. You will not be pressured into a procedure which will not help you — in fact on many occasions I discourage patients from procedures which will not give them the greatest cosmetic surgery results. I have shared the following checklist to help you better decide if you’re ready to undergo surgery and help you determine what is best for you.

Really think about your expectations and goals. The decision to have plastic surgery should be taken seriously.  You need to be honest with yourself about what you want to have done and the results you anticipate to achieve.

Do your research. Do your homework before going forward with any procedure. Research your doctor, the procedure, the benefits, risks, cost, pre and post-surgery care, hospital accommodations, and recovery. It is crucial that you spend time studying and looking for information precise to the surgery you are considering.

Have a thorough consultation. This is your time to ask as many questions as you want and voice your concerns regarding your surgery and view before and after results for plastic surgery. For example, ask “What are the risks and complications associated with my breast augmentation?” The purpose of the consultation is to make sure that you are given all the essential information to make an informed choice. This process is imperative to help ensure that you are not approaching the procedure with an unrealistic notion of what can be accomplished. Being clear and specific about what problem areas bother you can help to achieve the best results.

Consider all of your options. Give yourself some time to think about your options, deliberate what you discussed during your consultation and the potential benefits and risks of having your procedure.

Utilize a financial plan. Most cosmetic surgery procedures comprise three costs: anesthesia fees, facility fees, and surgeon’s fees. Southern Plastic Surgery provides patient financing options for those that qualify for any reconstructive or cosmetic surgery service we provide. Included within our financing options is CareCredit℠. CareCredit℠ is an 18-month plan that charges no interest as long as monthly minimum payments are successfully met, and payment is received in-full within the 18 month promotional period.

I want every patient who walks through my door to be comfortable, aware, and confident in their goals and my abilities as their cosmetic surgeon. The BOTOX® Basics

As reported in the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) 2013 statistics, botulinum toxin A, otherwise known as BOTOX® ranked as the number one non-surgical procedure with 6,321,160 treatments performed that year alone. This FDA-approved injectable is an anti-aging substance that helps eliminate fine facial lines, frown lines, and other facial wrinkles caused by muscle activity. Having achieved my “Platinum Level Status” as a BOTOX® Cosmetic injector, I ensure my patients’ optimal results as well as address each patient’s unique needs for facial rejuvenation.

atlanta botox cosmetic injectionsIn a recent article titled “BOTOX: What’s All the Hype About?” by ASPS, the use of BOTOX® has been used since 1920, and utilized for commercial marketing in 1997. Prior to cosmetic use, the injectable was used for individuals who were suffering from muscle spasms of the face and eyes which in turn proved the future efficacy in eliminating wrinkles and fine lines.

Also known as a “lunch-hour procedure” because it takes very little time to perform, BOTOX® can effectively treat facial wrinkles, though very differently than other facial treatments. While most facial fillers plump up areas of the face which are lacking in supportive tissue or fat deposits, BOTOX® Cosmetic blocks the release of certain chemicals in facial muscles, preventing them from contracting and forming wrinkles. BOTOX® is also used to temporarily remove frown lines, fine lines and other types of facial wrinkles caused by expression and its effects can last for several months following the cosmetic skin treatment.

For patients looking to address other areas of the face such as the cheeks, chin, lips, or nasolabial folds, I offer a variety of facial fillers including Restylane®, Juvéderm®, Voluma™, and Radiesse®.  While all of these types of injections target the signs of aging, they do not permanently stop the aging process. Additional treatments are necessary to maintain results.
