Solutions to Post-Surgery Scarring

As with any surgical procedure, plastic surgery requires incisions whether you are seeking a breast augmentation, liposuction, tummy tuck, or a facelift; which often results in scarring. For many patients, an array of factors such as incision type, skin type, age, heredity, and even ethnicity can increase the chance of developing scars post-plastic surgery. To address scarring, I offer both topical and oral treatments. I will continue to do my part to meet your desired aesthetic goals, but I also place the utmost importance on pre- and post-surgery care in order to preserve your cosmetic surgery results, minimize scarring, and expedite positive recovery from surgery.

arnika forteTo reduce scarring, I offer the topical treatment, bioCorneum®, which is a patented gel that dries within minutes forming an invisible, breathable, and waterproof silicone barrier over the affected area. This topical gel allows the scar to mature through normal collagen synthesis cycles with twice daily application. Treatment has been shown to smooth scars and reduce discoloration; generally the recommended treatment time for newer scars is at least 60 to 90 days.

bioCorneumAdditionally, I also offer Arnika Forte™, which is an oral homeopathic pill that may be taken prior to your surgery to reduce bruising and swelling while promoting recovery.  This natural formula, containing a combination of Arnica Montana, Bromelain, Bioflavanoids, and Vitamin C, should be taken a couple days prior to your surgery and continued for several days in order to optimize cosmetic surgery results.

If you’ve undergone facial plastic surgery, I recommend any of the skincare products we carry at our office or skin treatments such as chemical peels and laser skin resurfacing at Laser Lights Cosmetic Center, which can help to improve your skin’s appearance and texture as well as assist with healing and scarring from surgery.

Guide to Cosmetic Injectables

When it comes to preventing the aging process, there are multiple non-surgical procedures that can aid in keeping you looking young. With all the numerous injectables that’re on the market now, it is almost impossible to keep up with the available options and their differences. At Southern Plastic Surgery P.C., Dr. David Whiteman has been performing cosmetic injectable treatments for over 20 years, which helps ensure his patients’ outstanding, long lasting results with his skin rejuvenation treatments. Here’s a breakdown of the FDA-approved cosmetic injectables that we offer:

This title is only awarded to physicians with an expertise in safely using Allergan® products. BOTOX®, also known as a “lunch-hour procedure,” because it takes very little time to perform, is FDA-approved for the following three areas: crow’s feet, forehead lines, and the wrinkles in between and around the eyes. BOTOX® is also used to temporarily remove frown lines, fine lines and other types of facial wrinkles caused by expression and its effects can last for several months or longer.

Restylane®: This FDA-approved injectable reduces deep facial wrinkles and removes fine lines. This wrinkle treatment provides volume to areas of the face that have depleted over time such as the areas around the mouth and can also be used to enhance cheeks and lips.

Expression®: Also FDA-approved, Expression® consists of hyaluronic acid that smoothes away wrinkles and fine lines and restores depleted volume. The filler addresses areas around the eyes, forehead, and cheeks. It can also be applied to the lips and nasolabial folds using shorter injections. Expression® requires no downtime, with results typically lasting 6 months to a year.

Juvéderm®: Using Hylacross™ technology, Juvéderm® is a smoother facial filler than other injectables, causing injected sites to not appear bumpy. Juvéderm® replenishes lost volume in your face including the cheeks, chin, and lips and also provides a natural looking appearance, with results lasting up to 18 months. Dr. Whiteman also offers Juvéderm Voluma™ XC, and Juvéderm XL with Lidocaine to help minimize any minor discomfort.

Dysport®: This injectable is used to treat expression lines such as wrinkles and fine lines between and around the eyes, and the forehead. It also has the extra benefit of treating migraines, excessive sweating of the armpits, and helps relieve spasms in the neck and eye muscles. Dysport® requires no downtime and results typically last 6 months.

Radiesse®: Re-plumps smile lines, wrinkles on the cheeks, and the jowls that diminish in reaction to collagen loss caused by aging. The hylauronic acid molecules within Radiesse® address deeper wrinkles around the mouth and cheeks. The filler can also be used to address the aging of hands. Most patients have seen visible improvement in wrinkles and facial volume up to a year after their first injection.

Restoring a “Baby Face” with Facial Fillers

Traditional facial procedures like facelift and eyelid surgery are known to address the signs of aging and restore a more rested, youthful appearance. In addition to surgical procedures, double board certified plastic surgeon Dr. David Whiteman also provides non-surgical treatments including Botox® and facial fillers to reduce wrinkles and fine lines. In a recent New York Times article, the term “baby face” was coined by patients who are seeking the round, plump cheeks that associate with a younger faces. Facial fillers are typically injected into targeted areas of the face where wrinkles appear, but now physicians have begun injecting fillers into cheeks for a fuller, lifted result.

During consultation, Dr. Whiteman discusses treatment plans with each patient to address their concerns. Facial fillers such as Juvéderm® and Expression® are composed of hyaluronic acid, a naturally occurring substance found in human skin. Fillers stimulate skin to produce more of its own collagen so treatments last longer, typically up to a year or two.

As one of the most prominent areas of the face, the cheeks may deflate and show excess skin as age and gravity takes its toll. These fillers re-plump areas where creases and furrows develop while also lifting folds. Facial fillers are a great non-surgical alternative to cheek implants or facelift surgery as anti-aging treatments. Many patients choose injectables as there is minimal downtime and no surgery, scars, or incisions required.
