Lower Body Contouring Procedures

Want to bring new life to your physique? There are many contributing factors including age, an increase or decrease in weight, or post-pregnancy that may all take a toll on your appearance. There are various body contouring procedures I perform including thigh lift, liposuction, tummy tuck, and buttock augmentation to target areas of  stubborn, unwanted fat, weakened muscles, and/or excess skin on the lower half of the body. According to The American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), 200,000 liposuction procedures were performed in 2013 along with 111,986 tummy tucks, 9,993 Brazilian Butt Lifts, 8,709 thigh lifts, and 7,281 lower body lifts.

While these procedures can help you achieve personal cosmetic surgery goals, it’s important to remember it should not be a substitute for leading a healthy lifestyle.  I advise my post-surgery patients to always maintain proper nutrition and exercise regularly in order to preserve successful results. History of the Tummy Tuck

One of the most popular procedures I have performed on both male and female patients has been tummy tuck surgery, also known as abdominoplasty. Unlike other body contouring procedures such as liposuction, which does not eliminate loose skin or target muscle separation, tummy tucks are specifically designed to remove excess skin and fat from the abdominal area. In order to produce a flat, smooth contour on the midsection, over the years I have perfected innovative techniques that have evolved over decades of procedures performed around the world. But have you ever wondered how tummy tucks today got their start?

atlanta Tummy Tuck SurgeryModern plastic surgery first began in the 1800’s when doctors revived techniques that were first discovered by early cultures who used portions of stretched skin to cover open wounds. As time progressed, physicians introduced medical advances in surgery techniques due to treating millions of wounded World War I soldiers. In 1890 the first recorded tummy tuck, known then as a   dermolipectomy, was performed in France by Drs. Demars and Marx.  In the United States, the first tummy tuck was performed in Baltimore, Maryland by a gynecologic surgeon named Dr. Kelly in 1899.

During a tummy tuck procedure, incisions are made in the lower abdominal region between the hips; the loose skin and unwanted fat are removed, followed by repairing the weakened abdominal muscles. By repairing affected abdominal muscles, the midsection maintains an even smoother appearance. If there are still remaining areas of unwanted fat in the hips, flanks, or back, liposuction may be combined with tummy tuck surgery to remove the fat. Over my 20 plus years of practice, I have perfected a specialized tummy tuck technique, which involves tapering the Scarpa fascia portion of the abdominal region to enhance waist narrowing. By utilizing these methods, abdominoplasty results can produce an improved waist definition in proportion to a natural body structure.

While tummy tucks can help you achieve personal cosmetic surgery goals, it is important to remember it should not be a substitute for weight loss or a healthy lifestyle. Post-surgery, I advise my patients to maintain proper nutrition and exercise regularly in order to preserve positive results. Dr. David Whiteman Attends the 40th Annual Canadian Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery Meeting

TummyTuckLast month, Dr. David Whiteman traveled to Vancouver, Canada to attend the 40th annual meeting of the Canadian Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (CSAPS). Dr. Whiteman is double board certified in plastic and reconstructive surgery from both the American Board of Plastic Surgeons and the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada. During the CSAPS meeting, Dr. Whiteman attended lectures and discussions, as well as presented his research on advancements in abdominoplasty (tummy tuck surgery).

Tummy tucks improve the contour of the midsection by removing excess fat and skin and retightening weakened abdominal muscles. Patients can also choose a mini tummy tuck option which removes excess skin and fat, but does not address abdominal muscles. This body procedure is often popular in mommy makeover procedures and post-bariatric surgery. As part of the CSAPS faculty, Dr. Whiteman presented a surgical technique for tummy tuck surgery to improve patient results and safety. With his latest studies, abdominoplasty results can yield an improved waist definition in proportion to the patient’s body structure. This technique can be applied to both full tummy tuck and mini tummy tuck surgeries.
