Cosmetic procedures come in many forms. Between plastic surgery procedures like tummy tucks, facelifts, and cosmetic breast surgery to nonsurgical cosmetic treatments like facial fillers, Botox® injections, and nonsurgical fat reduction, patients trying to improve some aspect of their appearance have a lot of great options to choose from. But with this level of freedom can come indecision. How do you determine which approach will be the most helpful for you? When patients ask me if they would be better off with a nonsurgical procedure or plastic surgery, the answer depends on their specific situation and the results they hope to achieve.

Nonsurgical treatments offer several unique advantages for people who may prefer not to undergo surgery. Patients seem to love how easily and quickly many nonsurgical procedures can be performed, as well as the subtle and natural-looking results that they can provide. In most cases, nonsurgical treatments do not require the amount of downtime for recovery that plastic surgery does. Nonsurgical treatments can also be more cost effective than their surgical counterparts.

Plastic surgery has its own special benefits too. For patients who seek bigger, more significant changes to their appearance, surgery will most likely be required. There is no nonsurgical alternative that can replicate the results of breast augmentation or tummy tuck surgery. Additionally, conditions like gynecomastia (male breast enlargement) cannot be successfully treated without surgery.

In the following video, I discuss both plastic surgery and nonsurgical cosmetic procedures and how I use both to help patients rejuvenate their appearance:

Remember that this doesn’t have to be an “either or” scenario. For many patients, nonsurgical treatments can be an excellent way to accentuate and prolong the results of your plastic surgery procedure. It’s important to consult with an experienced, board-certified plastic surgeon to help understand which procedure will be able to help you achieve the new appearance that you deserve.
