Frequently asked questions (or FAQs) are a tried and true way to provide a baseline of useful and helpful information on a wide variety of subjects, including popular plastic surgery procedures like eyelid surgery. Who Is Eyelid Surgery Designed to Help?
Eyelid surgery is meant to help people who want to improve their appearance by eliminating sagging or drooping eyelids, as well as puffiness or “bags” under their eyes. These issues can occur in either the upper or lower eyelids (or both).
Why Do Eyelids Droop In The First Place?
This can happen for different reasons. Over time, the skin along the eyelids can naturally stretch and the muscles in the eyelid can weaken. Some people develop small deposits of fat in the eyelids that can also cause drooping. Some people may experience this as a side effect of injuries to the area of certain medical conditions including diabetes, Horner syndrome, and more.
How Is Eyelid Surgery Performed?
During the procedure, I will make very small incisions along the natural folds of the eyelids to access loose skin (and fat deposits when present). I am then able to remove excess skin, tissue, and fat, while tightening the underlying muscles. For lower eyelid surgery, I can often make a tiny incision inside the lower lid to hide the scar completely.
How Long Does Eyelid Surgery Take?
This depends on the specific nature of each surgery, but eyelid surgery typically takes between 1-2 hours (and sometimes less).
Does Eyelid Surgery Have to be Performed in a Hospital?
No. In fact, eyelid surgery can sometimes be performed in-office. This means that no trips to a hospital or surgical center will be required and the patient can leave to recover from the comfort of their own home after their procedure has been completed.
What Can I Expect When Recovering After Eyelid Surgery?
Post-surgical swelling and bruising is normal for the first couple weeks after eyelid surgery. There will likely be mild soreness or tightness in the area, but pain is very rare. Applying cold compresses for the first 3 days and keeping your head elevated while sleeping during this time can help.
