It’s no secret that plastic surgery for men has become far more common over the years. According to statistics gathered by the American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, the number of cosmetic procedures performed annually on men has increased over 325% since 1997 and continues to steadily increase every year. Although there has been an increase in cosmetic surgeries tailored specifically to men like male breast reduction, data shows that more men than ever are opting for universal procedures like facelifts.
Over 13,000 facelifts were performed on men in the US last year alone, making it the fifth most popular cosmetic procedure for men. The social stigma associated with men undergoing plastic surgery seems to be fading. The perception that a facelift is only for models and movie stars has gone by the wayside as more men are opting to undergo the procedure to restore their youthfulness and look their best.
Some of this increase in popularity is the result of technological breakthroughs in the field that allow for more natural, masculine results. These breakthroughs include the Z-plasty, a technique I use underneath the chin for certain patients that can help limit recovery time. For many men in the corporate world, maintaining a youthful appearance is essential for remaining vital in a highly competitive environment.
In a piece published by Business Insider, male plastic surgery patients were divided into 4 categories, including the “CEO or Board Member”. These patients are typically successful, experienced businessmen who opt for procedures like facelifts as a means to match how they look with how they feel. For many of these patients, surgeons have coined the phrase “Forbes facelift” which is a combination procedure that combines a facelift with a neck lift and sometimes a brow lift.
In addition to cosmetic surgery procedures, men are also using non-invasive treatments like Botox® cosmetic injections to help restore a more youthful appearance. Regardless of the motivation, what’s clear is that more men than ever are willing do whatever it takes to achieve the appearance they desire and that this trend is unlikely to go away any time soon.
