As we age, the body experiences natural changes to the body that can impact our appearance and self-esteem. In the case of breast sagging, this is something that many women know all too well. The female breasts are made entirely of fat and tissue, but not muscle. This means that once this skin has lost elasticity and begun sagging, it cannot be tightened up with exercise. Thankfully, there is an outstanding solution for breast sagging available in the form of breast lift surgery.
The causes of breast sagging can vary from person-to-person. As women age, the skin in the breast area will naturally begin to lose elasticity and stretch out. As a result, breast fullness can be affected as the underlying support system of the breast is compromised. Breast sagging can also be the result of natural gravity over time, smoking, overexposure to the sun, weight fluctuation, and pregnancy.
Breast lift surgery is a tried and true solution to breast sagging. During the procedure, I will remove loose, stretched skin (as well as some fat, as needed) from the breast area. It is important to note, if there is an over abundance of fat and tissue, a breast reduction as discussed below may also be needed. The underlying breast tissue will then be repositioned to help achieve perkier, younger-looking breasts. A breast lift can be extremely helpful for women whose nipples have fallen below the breast crease and have begun to point downward.
For some women, undergoing breast reduction surgery may be able to help with breast sagging. However, this specific procedure is more intended to address glandular breast tissue for women with naturally large breasts, as opposed to women who have experienced skin laxity in their breasts over time. It’s a fact that these procedures can be performed together (and often are) to help provide comprehensive rejuvenation to the breast contour for patients who require it or choose this.
Breast sagging can put a serious damper on the way that women feel about their appearance, but it’s comforting to know that there are terrific surgical options available.
