As a board-certified plastic surgeon, it’s always interesting for me to see new treatments and procedure techniques transition from curios to accepted and beloved methods to help patients improve their appearance. Over the last decade, fat transfer injections would certainly fit this description. While people often think of fat transfer as an alternative for breast enhancement or body contouring (ex: the Brazilian Butt Lift), it’s a fact that fat transfer injections for the face can also provide patients with very natural aesthetic results.
For anyone who may not be familiar with this procedure, fat transfer injections use fat that is removed from the patient’s own body using liposuction to rejuvenate areas elsewhere on the body. In the case of facial fat transfer, this fat is used to add volume and plump up common problem areas that lack volume like the cheeks, lips, and the area below the eyes. I make sure that all the fat that is removed is correctly and safely processed before any injections take place.
Fat transfer for the face is able to offer patients an aesthetic result similar to that of facial filler injections. As we age, it’s natural for certain areas of the face to experience a decrease or redistribution of fat, leading to a loss of facial volume. This can cause a person’s face to begin to look sunken or hollow, and unfortunately older than they may prefer. In my experience, I have seen fat transfer help many of my patients considerably refresh and rejuvenate their face.
Because fat transfer injections only use the patient’s own organic material during treatment, there is no risk for any kind of adverse reaction. Although recovery time after fat transfer may vary, most patients are able to resume their normal daily activities in just 1-2 days. Some degree of post-treatment bruising and swelling should be expected, but this is only temporary as the body heals and the final results from the treatment settle in. I always make sure to discuss what patients can expect from their recovery during the pre-treatment consultation appointment.
Fat transfer injections offer patients just one more safe, dependable and effective option for facial rejuvenation.
