As I have discussed with my patients many times over the years, there is far more that goes into determining if someone is a good candidate for plastic surgery than a desire for an aesthetic change. Take gynecomastia surgery for example. Gynecomastia, a very common condition that causes male breast enlargement in men of all ages, is one of the leading things that drives male plastic surgery today. However, experiencing some form of male breast enlargement doesn’t actually mean that someone is a good candidate for male breast reduction surgery, the one true solution for gynecomastia. For the purposes of education, I wanted to discuss more specifically what makes someone a good candidate for gynecomastia surgery.
Gynecomastia is extremely common for men. In fact, roughly 40% of all men in the US will experience the condition in their lifetime. But even with these numbers in mind, it’s important to reiterate that not all male breast enlargement is caused by gynecomastia. Which also means that not everyone who is interested in gynecomastia surgery is necessarily a good candidate for the procedure.
In order for me to recommend male breast reduction surgery for a patient, they must meet the following criteria:
- Must experience true gynecomastia caused by excess glandular tissue (and not just fat) in the chest area
- Must be beyond teenage years to make sure their issue is not just related to puberty and other natural changes that will correct themselves over time
- Must be in good enough mental and physical healthy to safely undergo and recover from surgery
- Must develop and maintain a positive outlook and realistic expectations for their procedure
