Liposuction can sculpt the body by removing stubborn areas of fat that don’t respond to traditional weight-loss methods. During the past decade, traditional liposuction has been refined and several different techniques are currently in use, including ultrasound-assisted lipoplasty (UAL), the tumescent technique, and the super-wet technique. These procedures are now available at Southern Plastic Surgery, serving the Atlanta, Georgia area.

With these advanced liposuction techniques, Dr. Whiteman is able to provide more precise results and a quicker recovery time. Which method is right for you can only be determined during a consultation with Dr. Whiteman. All of our body contouring patients are invited to inquire about our Body Package, which is specifically intended to help patients maximize the benefit they derive from their procedure.
Ultrasound-assisted liposuction uses ultrasonic energy (sound waves) to liquefy the fat to be removed, making the procedure simpler and more effective, though the procedure takes longer than some other liposuction techniques. It is very effective, however, in procedures focusing on more fibrous areas of the body, or in procedures where extreme precision is needed.

Our Atlanta, Georgia office offers tumescent liposuction, which involves injecting anesthetic liquid, salt water, and adrenaline into the areas of fat to be removed. This procedure causes the compartments of fat to become puffed up (or “tumesced”), making removal easier, and allowing for less blood loss during the liposuction procedure. “Super-wet” liposuction is very similar to the tumescent procedure, except that slightly less fluid is injected; generally a volume equal to the amount of fat to be removed. Tumescent and super-wet liposuction techniques are usually preferred, as less blood is lost during the procedure, minimizing swelling, and as the anesthesia stays in the body, there is usually minimal pain for the next day or so.

Utilized along with the tumescent technique, power-assisted liposuction involves using equipment that causes the tip of the suction tube to vibrate during the procedure. The vibration dislodges the fat cells so that they may be suctioned away easier, with less damage to the surrounding tissue.
A procedure that has recently gained tremendous popularity, not just at our Atlanta office, but nationwide, is the Buttock Augmentation, or Brazilian Butt Lift. Also known as fat transfer, the Buttock Augmentation is a shape-modifying procedure that uses fat injections to enhance the shape of your buttocks. Usually, the injections consist of your own fat from other areas harvested through liposuction around the buttocks, stomach, or elsewhere. This fat is run through a purifying process before it is re-injected into the necessary sites on your buttocks. The number of purified fat injections needed to attain your desired result may vary greatly from person to person based on the amount of fat needed, the number of sites where injections are desired, and the depth of the injections into the buttocks.

Q: Am I a good candidate for liposuction?
Candidates for liposuction include people with areas of stubborn, excess fat that are unable to be resolved with diet and exercise. Liposuction candidates should be in good mental and physical health before their procedure. Although liposuction can often provide very substantial improvements, it is rare for liposuction results to be perfect so patients should speak with their cosmetic surgeon about what results they can expect.
Q: What areas of the body can I treat with liposuction?
The most commonly treated liposuction areas for are the abdomen, hips, thighs, arms, buttocks, cheeks and neck. For men, commonly treated areas include the chin and neck area, abdomen, flanks (“love-handles”) and the chest area (or breast area).
