Since slang is commonly used on the internet and in everyday conversations, we explained the meaning of many slang terms relating to facial plastic surgery in our most recent blog. Now, we’d like to explain plastic surgery slang associated with cosmetic procedures of the body.
“Dog Ears” – Although this phrase probably makes you think of an adorable pet, dog ears aren’t nearly as cute on people as the term describes the puckering of skin at the end of a scar. While this effect can be avoided with certain surgical techniques, dog ears are more commonly associated with plastic surgery procedures like tummy tuck and breast reduction. Dog ears can be eliminated with scar revision surgery.
“Saddlebags” – Traditionally, the term saddlebags describes a piece of luggage that sits on the back of a horse or motorcycle that allows room for excess cargo, but in the plastic surgery world, saddlebags refer to excess fat in the outer thighs. Saddlebags that won’t respond to proper diet and exercise are usually best treated with liposuction.
“Muffin Tops” – Most people love muffin tops—that is, until they start showing up on our waistlines. Just like the delicious part of a muffin seeps over the edges of the pan as it cooks, muffin tops describe the excess fat seeping over the edge of a person’s pants and can be removed with liposuction.
“Mommy Makeover” – This term refers to a group of plastic surgery procedures designed to address the affects typically noticed after pregnancy and childbirth. Each mommy makeover is different as they are customized depending on each patient’s needs. However, mommy makeover surgery usually includes tummy tuck, liposuction, and a cosmetic breast procedure (breast augmentation, breast lift, breast reduction, or a combination of the aforementioned procedures).
“Man Boobs or Moobs” – Though this term is pretty self-explanatory, man boobs occur because of a condition known as gynecomastia, or overly large male breasts. Fortunately, Dr. David Whiteman performs male breast reduction to eliminate excess fat, glandular tissue, and skin to produce a more masculine chest.
“Boob Job” – The term boob job is commonly used interchangeably with breast augmentation. Breast augmentation is a plastic surgery procedure involving the insertion of a breast implant to add volume to a woman’s breasts.
“Banana Roll” – As if cellulite in this area isn’t a big enough issue on its own, banana roll describes the excess fat stored on the back of the thigh just beneath the buttocks that can be eliminated with liposuction.
“Bat Wings” – Sometimes called chicken wings, bat wings refer to the excess hanging skin under the upper arms, which usually becomes apparent after extreme weight loss or weight fluctuation. Arm lift surgery can reduce the appearance of bat wings.
“Love Handles” – While this description is somewhat sweet, few people are pleased with love handles. Love handles describe the excess fat bulging from the sides and back of the abdomen and can usually be eliminated with liposuction.
