As we age, some areas of the body are more susceptible to imperfections like patches of unwanted fat. The abdomen is one such area for many people. Belly fat can be incredibly stubborn and nearly impossible to remove with lifestyle adjustments like diet and exercise alone. This is why I am proud to offer my patients different means of addressing excess fat in the abdominal area with both cosmetic surgery and nonsurgical fat reduction. Keep reading for more details on the available options here at Southern Plastic Surgery.
For many patients, this discussion begins and ends with liposuction surgery. Liposuction is a tried and true option for removing hard-to-lose fat from all over the body, including the belly area. During liposuction for the abdomen, a series of micro-incisions are made in the site of the fat deposits. A thin tube known as a cannula is then carefully inserted underneath the skin to effectively loosen fat cells in the area. Finally, a medical vacuum is used to suction out the loosened fat deposits, leading to a more trim and healthy body contour.
My laser center, Laser Lights Cosmetic Laser Center, performs nonsurgical fat reduction with SculpSure® to provide my patients who would rather not undergo surgery with an alternative to liposuction. The treatment works by using plates that send controlled warmth into the fat layers underneath your skin. Your body will then naturally eliminate the affected fat cells from the abdomen (or other areas) over the next few weeks and the course of a series of treatment sessions. Although the nonsurgical approach may not be the most helpful for everyone, I still like to give my patients the option.
In the following video, I discuss how both of these approaches to fat reduction can help patients rejuvenate their appearance and get rid of unwanted belly fat:
