Breast reconstruction helps women who have had a mastectomy, or the removal of one or both breasts due to cancer or another disease. Using the latest technology, breast reconstruction can produce natural-looking results that can help you regain your confidence and self-esteem. A mastectomy can be an extremely difficult emotional trauma for any patient; and breast reconstruction surgery can help patients to look and feel like the woman they were before their life-changing surgery.
Breast reconstruction is a complicated procedure that is different for each and every patient, and largely depends on the patient’s condition and individual situation. The ultimate goal is to replace the breast tissue, skin, and nipple-areolar that were removed during the mastectomy and create a new breast(s) mound that looks natural and symmetrical on the body. Reconstructing the breast can be done using a patient’s own muscle, fat, and skin to create or cover the breast or can be constructed through the surgical insertion of a silicone or saline implant. If the patient only requires the removal of one breast during treatment, additional procedures on the opposite breast, including a breast lift, breast augmentation, or breast reduction, may be recommended to improve symmetry and give both breasts a similar position, look, and feel.
In addition to performing their breast reconstruction surgery at his Duluth, Ga practice (north of Atlanta), Dr. Whiteman has helped many breast cancer patients come to a greater understanding of their condition by helping set up a “buddy system,” in which one cancer survivor meets and discusses the condition with another.
