Styles change over time. This is true regarding what we wear as well as our physical appearances. Although in the past, cosmetic breast surgery was almost shorthand for breast enlargement, this is far from true today. More than ever before many of the patients I speak with about plastic surgery for the breasts are more interested in achieving smaller, perkier, younger-looking breasts.

While every patient has different motivations and goals heading into their cosmetic surgery journey, there are several possible reasons for this shift in attitude towards a woman’s preferred breast size. For one, societal preferences change. Today, many women seem to prefer a more fit, natural look. Downsizing their breasts can also improve the quality-of-life for some women with larger breasts who experience back pain or posture issues due to their breasts being heavier.

The increased demand for more modestly-sized breasts doesn’t mean that cosmetic breast surgery has become less common. It just means that some surgical preferences have become more popular. More women than ever are undergoing breast augmentation every year, only many of them are choosing to use smaller-sized breast implants during their procedures. Some women who want a slight increase in breast volume may be good candidates for fat transfer to the breast in lieu of breast implants. My signature technique for fat transfer injections uses liposuction to remove fat from an area of the body. The fat is then processed and injected into the breasts to help modestly increase breast volume in just a few minutes. Additionally, breast reduction surgery can help women with larger breasts reduce current breast volume. During breast reduction for women, an incision is made on the lower area of the breast and extra skin and tissue are then removed to achieve a smaller, better-shaped breast contour. In the video below, I discuss what cosmetic surgery options patients who seek more modest breast enhancement may have available to them.

As a plastic surgeon with nearly 25 years of experience, I have seen firsthand the kind of life-changing results that cosmetic breast surgery can provide. Plastic surgery is not a one size-fits-all-process and what is trendy may not necessarily be the right choice for you. However, it’s important for patients to know they have more options than ever before to help achieve the breast contour they want.
