Want to Look Less Tired? Try the Benefits of Facial Plastic Surgery

There are days when we wake up with dark circles and bags under our eyes after a late night of no sleep, but they eventually fade. As we get older though, the tissues around the eyes weaken and can cause fat deposits that help support the eye to shift into the eyelids – ultimately creating puffier lids. At the same rate, skin starts to thin as gravity, years of sun exposure, and less collagen production are among the main contributing factors when we start to notice the physical toll facial aging has on a person’s appearance. For those who want to freshen up their youthful look, they take advantage of the benefits of facial plastic surgery to get a well-rested, more refreshed appearance.

As a double-board certified plastic surgeon with over 22 years of experience with facial rejuvenation, one of the most common gripes I hear from my patients the most is how they’re not happy about friends, family, coworkers, or even strangers at the grocery store telling them how tired they look, even when they’re not. Though it’s impossible to permanently stop signs of aging, two popular facial plastic surgery procedures, eyelid surgery and brow lift, give patients their youthful look back by reviving a once vibrant appearance. Check out why over 244,000 patients underwent either of these procedures in 2015 and how it can possibly give you the remarkable look you’ve been dreaming of.

Eyelid Surgery (Blepharoplasty)

If eyelid surgery had a mantra it’d probably be something to the effect of: Reposition. Remove. Rejuvenate. Men and women can’t escape a fatigued look when the skin around the eyes has significant sagging and drooping – creating an almost bunching look. This type of facial rejuvenation procedure addresses fat, skin, and muscle around the eyes to create an invigorated, more awake look. The beauty of this particular procedure is that instead of the results nonverbally screaming “I had plastic surgery,”  they typically provide more subtle plastic surgery results that will have even those close to the patients wondering what’s different about them (but that’s up to you if you share that secret or not)!

Brow Lift

Having an overhang that seems to flop over the upper lids is something many patients frequently exhibit as they get older – yet another contributing factor to a seriously tired look. When a patient comes into my practice, sometimes they think a facelift is the go-to solution for their aging woes, but when it comes to isolated cosmetic concerns, focusing on one specific area (especially if the other parts of the face have some years to catch up) can do the trick. It’s not until a consultation that they can explore the best options to get the most ideal results to achieve their goals. If a brow lift is what’s needed to give them a fresher, younger, less tired look, then here’s how it’s done:

What Exactly Is a Rapid Recovery Lift?

The facelift has been around for a while; in fact, the first facelift was reportedly performed by Eugen Hӧllander in 1901 and paved the way to numerous advancements in facial plastic surgery ever since. There is always a demand for improvement within the plastic surgery field. I’ve noticed that more patients in the 30-40 age range are seeking surgical procedures to help them combat common signs of facial aging like wrinkles, lax skin and unwanted accumulated fat. There tends to be a slight misconception that facelifts are primarily for seasoned patients who are experiencing extensive aging, but that’s not entirely the case when exploring a rapid lift. So what exactly is a rapid recovery lift and who can benefit from this procedure?

As a double-board certified Atlanta plastic surgeon I myself am consistently researching and implementing the most advanced techniques to improve the results for my patients. Some people don’t necessarily want to explore surgical routes and often turn to nonsurgical facial treatments like Botox® and facial fillers for temporary relief of their aging concerns. For others looking for more long-lasting/preventative results, they may want to consider a rapid lift, or a mini facelift, based on key target areas it corrects and the recovery time that comes with it.

Let’s take a look at when you may want to consider a rapid recovery lift/mini facelift:

  • If you’re concerned that you look older than you feel on the inside
  • If you’re bothered by the appearance of sagging/excess skin on your face
  • If you have fat that’s accumulated under the chin and jaw
  • If you experience noticeably deep wrinkling around the mouth

One of the main reasons we call the mini facelift a rapid recovery lift is thanks to the shorter recovery time a patient needs to restore their youthful appearance. Sometimes referred to by patients as a “weekend procedure,” mini facelifts can be performed in office, under local anesthesia, depending on the extent of your facial aging. When performing a mini facelift small incisions along the hairline and ear so that they can hide nicely within the natural creases of the face. I focus on the lower third of the face (the neck, jowls, or mid-cheek/face) by removing loose skin, removing fat pockets, and lifting the skin back to a higher position on the face. Recovering from a rapid recovery lift is significantly less than the time needed to recover – generally patients can be back on the go after a few days to a week of their procedure.

The main objective for your mini facelift results is to regain that younger look you once had and feel confident with the reflection you see in the mirror. I’m not trying to make you look as if your face was a piece of rubber that was stretched beyond recognition. My goal is to produce results that are so subtle even your friends won’t be able to figure out what you changed about your look but at least you’ll be able to recognize your new, improved changes. Don’t let age make you think there’s a right or wrong time to undergo cosmetic plastic surgery because it’s all-inclusive.
