Cosmetic Injectables: Beyond Wrinkles

dysport atlanta georgiaThere are many benefits to cosmetic injectables: they work as anti-aging treatments, require little to no downtime, can be done on your lunch break and require no hospital stays, to name a few.  There are quite a few cosmetic injectable brands on the market today that each work to address a variety of aesthetic concerns for patients.  While they are most notably known for slowing down the progression of aging, cosmetic injectables are very dynamic and beneficial for much more than just fine lines and wrinkles.

Let’s take a look at three key areas that can benefit from cosmetic injectables:

Face – We all go through different stages of aging.  For some of us we spend summers outdoor and the sun’s powerful UV rays break down the collagen in the skin, making the skin sag and appear more aged than those who stay indoors.  For others, their genetic makeup simply shows fine lines and wrinkles at earlier stages in life.  To tackle these facial concerns we have two options within the injectables family: Botox®/Dysport® or facial fillers.  Botox® and Dysport® are two main brands of cosmetic injectables (both FDA approved to produce the same results but made by different manufacturers) used to treat expression lines (fine lines and wrinkles) on the upper part of the face.  They work by relaxing the muscles in the face that cause expression to create a smoother, less furrowed appearance.  Then we have facial fillers, which as the name would suggest fills areas of the face.  Made from naturally-occurring substances found in the human body, facial fillers restore areas of the face that have sunken in or could use added volume (such as the cheeks, lips and around the mouth), in addition to smoothing wrinkles and lines.  All cosmetic injectables provide temporary relief (results vary from six months to over a year depending on the specific injectable you choose) but can safely be repeated to maintain your cosmetic injectable results.

Hands – Our hands are exposed to all kinds of harmful elements and one of the dead giveaways of our age.  As we age, our skin becomes thinner and the veins more prominent – often creating a skeletal look for some patients.  Just this past June, Radiesse® was FDA-approved for the use of hand rejuvenation.  Hand rejuvenation using Radiesse® works similarly to the way treatments are administered for areas of the face; predetermined areas that could use more volume are determined and Radiesse® is administered in a short series of injections.  Once the filler has been injected, it is massaged into the hands to create an even look that covers soft tissue and reduces the appearance of veins and tendons in the hands.  Results are immediate and can last up to two years.

Nose – This is probably the least known option for cosmetic injectables.  For patients who have a sunken nose or simply want more volume added to reduce a flattened appearance, facial Juvéderm®, Expression® and Restylane® can revitalize the nose and the surrounding areas.  Fillers can be injected directly into the tip, base or bridge of the nose to produce a natural, more balanced look.  The results are not permanent as they are with a rhinoplasty (nose surgery) procedure, but additional treatments over time can help to maintain the results.

Refresh Your Look with Facial Rejuvenation

As an Atlanta cosmetic surgeon, I’ve seen how facial rejuvenation procedures are some of the most sought after cosmetic plastic surgery options today.  When you think about it, our faces are tough.  Not only do they fight against gravity, harmful exposure to the sun and aging in general, but the face is such a prominent feature that trying to hide certain insecurities we may have is near impossible and can be cause for concern for many of us.

Plastic Surgery in Atlanta GAOur genetic makeup is different, so there isn’t a recommended age to start facial rejuvenation but instead something to consider at different milestones in your life.  Think about the first time you noticed fine lines by the corners of your eyes or the moment you looked in the mirror and realized the under-eye bags were there to stay.  There are a variety of facial plastic surgery procedures that can help refresh your look and when you delve even deeper, I see many of my facial rejuvenation patients fit into two distinct groups: those that wait until signs of aging are prominent before they are prompted into action and those that start early to slow down the progression.

Get started early.

The beauty of cosmetic injectables is that they give patients temporary relief for the appearance of wrinkles, fine lines and sagging skin and depending on the type of product used (injectables vs. facial filler) can yield results up to a year.  The earlier you start cosmetic injectable treatments the less noticeable the concerns you have with your facial appearance will present themselves as your skin matures.  Starting earlier gives patients more time before major concerns give added cause to start considering a longer-lasting way of anti-aging.  Patients as young as 18 may opt for Botox®, Dysport® or Xeomin® to relax the wrinkle-causing muscles of the face while patients with thinned lips, deeper wrinkles or loss volume may consider facial fillers like Juvéderm®, Restylane®, Radiesse® or Perlane® to smooth out their skin or to better help maintain previous facial plastic surgery results.

Look more rested.

If you’ve graduated beyond the injectables phase and entered the ages of looking perpetually tired because of under eye bags and hooded eyelids, blepharoplasty (eyelid surgery) could be the facial rejuvenation treatment you consider.  The main goal of eyelid surgery is to remove excess fat, tissue and skin that accumulates around the eyes and this can be done on the upper, lower or a combination of both the upper and lower lids to get you back to looking more rested.  Eyelid surgery results are subtle enough that your family and close friends may not recognize that you had surgery, but effective enough that you look more relaxed, awake and as if you just had the best sleep of your life!

Lift your woes.

When the skin on your face starts to sag well beyond comfort and the folds are deep enough to make a bulldog your doppelgänger, a more invasive procedure, rhytidectomy (or better known as facelift), is needed to help turn back the clock.  Collagen breaks down as we get older and the loose skin creates a dulled appearance that can extend from the top of the forehead all the way down around the cheeks, jowls and neck.  A facelift can work in two ways.  On one hand it directly removes excess skin and on the other hand it addresses the fundamental cause of your facial aging.  To help these underlying concerns, I reposition the skin, tissue and muscle to replace the lost volume and create a look that is smoother and more youthful.  Patients have the option of a full facelift or may opt for isolated concerns on the upper, middle and lower sections of the face independently.  While facelift results are much more extensive than those which are produced from cosmetic injectable treatments, with any facial cosmetic procedure the plastic surgery results are not permanent and a touch up procedure is recommended to help you looking younger, for longer.

Are Your Hands Giving Away Your Age?

How many people do you know who have been celebrating their 30th birthdays for a few years now?  Sure we may feel young in fashionable clothes and are able to keep up with the lingo of younger generations, but when it comes to aging there isn’t much we can do to hide its transparency without a little assistance.  When gravity begins to take its toll on the skin, as we age, it becomes thin, starts to sag and more pronounced wrinkles and brown spots appear.  Fortunately, advancements in both nonsurgical and surgical cosmetic treatments make it possible to help reduce common signs of aging on the hands and face so you can keep everyone guessing as to what your real age is.

radiesse hand rejuvenation atlanta gaWith the face being one of the most prominent features that is most noticed in daily interactions with people, an aged appearance can make us look tired and dull.  However, solely looking at someone’s face is not always going to be a dead giveaway of their age; we’ve all seen how genetics can keep women and men looking years younger than they really are.  But if you look at the hands, they can be quite telling of a person’s age.  Our hands are constantly exposed to harmful environmental elements, like sun damage, and unless you are wearing daily SPF, there isn’t much you can do naturally to slow down the process.  Cosmetic injectables like Botox® and facial fillers like Juvéderm® and Restylane® have seen successes as wrinkle-reducing treatments for the face, but recently the popular filler Radiesse® was FDA-approved for hand rejuvenation.

Hand rejuvenation using Radiesse® works similarly to the way treatments are administered for areas of the face.  I like to start by determining the appropriate amount of filler to be used to fill out the bony, delicate skin that has thinned out on the hands.  Once I am ready to start injecting, I lift the skin off of the back of the hand (making sure to avoid tiny vessels) and inject the filler into areas that can use plumping.  After the injections are administered, I then gently massage Radiesse® into the hands to even out any bumps and make sure that the treatment successfully covers the soft tissue and creates less prominent veins and tendons.  There is a numbing agent within in the Radiesse® syringe that helps alleviate discomfort for patients and only minimal swelling or bruising may occur after treatment. Results can be seen immediately after treatment and patients can return to their normal activities.   Generally, patients can expect their results to last 1-2 years and touch ups are encouraged to continue stimulating collagen, reduce volume loss and overall extend the result of your younger, more rejuvenated hands.
