Refresh Your Look with Facial Rejuvenation

As an Atlanta cosmetic surgeon, I’ve seen how facial rejuvenation procedures are some of the most sought after cosmetic plastic surgery options today.  When you think about it, our faces are tough.  Not only do they fight against gravity, harmful exposure to the sun and aging in general, but the face is such a prominent feature that trying to hide certain insecurities we may have is near impossible and can be cause for concern for many of us.

Plastic Surgery in Atlanta GAOur genetic makeup is different, so there isn’t a recommended age to start facial rejuvenation but instead something to consider at different milestones in your life.  Think about the first time you noticed fine lines by the corners of your eyes or the moment you looked in the mirror and realized the under-eye bags were there to stay.  There are a variety of facial plastic surgery procedures that can help refresh your look and when you delve even deeper, I see many of my facial rejuvenation patients fit into two distinct groups: those that wait until signs of aging are prominent before they are prompted into action and those that start early to slow down the progression.

Get started early.

The beauty of cosmetic injectables is that they give patients temporary relief for the appearance of wrinkles, fine lines and sagging skin and depending on the type of product used (injectables vs. facial filler) can yield results up to a year.  The earlier you start cosmetic injectable treatments the less noticeable the concerns you have with your facial appearance will present themselves as your skin matures.  Starting earlier gives patients more time before major concerns give added cause to start considering a longer-lasting way of anti-aging.  Patients as young as 18 may opt for Botox®, Dysport® or Xeomin® to relax the wrinkle-causing muscles of the face while patients with thinned lips, deeper wrinkles or loss volume may consider facial fillers like Juvéderm®, Restylane®, Radiesse® or Perlane® to smooth out their skin or to better help maintain previous facial plastic surgery results.

Look more rested.

If you’ve graduated beyond the injectables phase and entered the ages of looking perpetually tired because of under eye bags and hooded eyelids, blepharoplasty (eyelid surgery) could be the facial rejuvenation treatment you consider.  The main goal of eyelid surgery is to remove excess fat, tissue and skin that accumulates around the eyes and this can be done on the upper, lower or a combination of both the upper and lower lids to get you back to looking more rested.  Eyelid surgery results are subtle enough that your family and close friends may not recognize that you had surgery, but effective enough that you look more relaxed, awake and as if you just had the best sleep of your life!

Lift your woes.

When the skin on your face starts to sag well beyond comfort and the folds are deep enough to make a bulldog your doppelgänger, a more invasive procedure, rhytidectomy (or better known as facelift), is needed to help turn back the clock.  Collagen breaks down as we get older and the loose skin creates a dulled appearance that can extend from the top of the forehead all the way down around the cheeks, jowls and neck.  A facelift can work in two ways.  On one hand it directly removes excess skin and on the other hand it addresses the fundamental cause of your facial aging.  To help these underlying concerns, I reposition the skin, tissue and muscle to replace the lost volume and create a look that is smoother and more youthful.  Patients have the option of a full facelift or may opt for isolated concerns on the upper, middle and lower sections of the face independently.  While facelift results are much more extensive than those which are produced from cosmetic injectable treatments, with any facial cosmetic procedure the plastic surgery results are not permanent and a touch up procedure is recommended to help you looking younger, for longer.

Non-Surgical & Surgical Facial Rejuvenation

Facial rejuvenation treatments come in many forms.  From daily skincare regimens of moisturizer to more entailed cosmetic facial plastic surgery, men and women of all ages and skin types are choosing facial rejuvenation procedures to combat signs of aging in order to revive their youthful appearance.  In fact, according to the 2014 statistics shared by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, facial rejuvenation procedures saw a surge in popularity and remained among the top five in both minimally-invasive and cosmetic surgery procedures:

Plastic Surgery in Atlanta GABotox® – 6.7 million treatments performed

Botox® contains a purified form of botulinum that works by temporarily relaxing the muscles that cause wrinkles between (glabellar lines) and around (crow’s feet) the eyes that form with age and repeated facial and forehead expressions.  As Botox® is injected into the muscle, it is eventually absorbed and eliminated by the body and therefore treatments must be “re-touched” just about every 4-6 months to maintain the same facial rejuvenation results.

Facial Fillers – 2.3 million treatments performed

Like Botox®, facial fillers are cosmetic injectables but are unique in that they are composed of naturally-occurring substances found in the human body that work to restore lost facial volume and smoothes wrinkles and lines.  Facial fillers such as Juvéderm®, Expression®, Perlane®, Radiesse® and Restylane® are great for patients aged 21 and up who have moderate to minimal signs of aging or simply want to help maintain previous plastic surgery results.  Popular areas for facial filler treatments include the cheeks, lips, around the mouth area and jaw line.  Depending on the type of filler you choose, typical results can last anywhere from 6 months up to two years, therefore follow-up treatments are necessary to keep a more youthful appearance.

Blepharoplasty (Eyelid Surgery) – 207,000 procedures performed

As we age, skin loses its elasticity, often causing the upper eyelids to droop and form excess fat deposits underneath the eyes on the lower eyelids.  Blepharoplasty is performed to eliminate those telltale signs of aging on the upper and/or lower eyelids by removing excess fat, tissue and skin around the eyes in order to provide a rested appearance.  Depending on the patient’s particular goals, eyelid surgery can be performed on the upper eyelids (to address the “hooded” appearance from sagging eyelid skin) and/or on the lower eyelids (to target the fatty tissue that creates under eye bags).

Facelift – 128,000 procedures performed

When you’re at the point where you’re looking for longer-lasting facial rejuvenation results, facelift surgery can target moderate to minimal signs of aging such as lax skin, or deep wrinkles and fine lines; particularly helpful for those looking to eliminate excess skin around the cheeks, jowls and neck.  Once I remove excess, sagging skin, I reposition the remaining skin, tissue and muscles (if needed) to fill lost volume and create an overall smoother, wrinkle-free appearance.  There are also those patients who may have specific isolated areas of concern on their face in regards to the neck and jowls and choose to opt for a mini facelift to only rejuvenate and tighten the lower third of the face.

Whichever facial rejuvenation plan we tailor for your unique needs is entirely up to you, however, the first step towards facial rejuvenation is to choose a board-certified plastic surgeon with extensive training in the procedure of your choosing.  When your safety is concerned, it is important to be your biggest advocate and do the research!  If you’d like to meet with me, cosmetic surgeon Dr. David Whiteman, to answer any questions, feel free to schedule a consultation whenever the need arises.  You can also stay connected with Southern Plastic Surgery on Facebook, Twitter and Google+ for plastic surgery news and updates.

The Benefits of Combining Plastic Surgery Procedures

During consultations, Dr. David Whiteman meets with patients who often express aesthetic concerns for more than one area of their face and/or body. At Southern Plastic Surgery, P.C., Dr. Whiteman offers procedures like facial rejuvenation and mommy makeover surgery that combine cosmetic treatments into a single procedure. Combining procedures lends other advantages in addition to overall rejuvenation as patients can avoid having two or more separate operations and recovery periods to reduce facility and anesthesia costs and overall downtime.

discussing options with plastic surgeonMany patients interested in facial procedures may want to smooth wrinkles and furrows while also addressing features like the nose or eyes. Cosmetic procedures such as blepharoplasty (eyelid surgery), facelift, and rhinoplasty can all address signs of aging including drooping skin, wrinkles, and lines. Botox® and facial fillers can also be applied with surgical procedures for improved anti-aging results. By combining procedures, Dr. Whiteman can help patients achieve a more refreshed, balanced look.

Breast augmentation and breast lift surgery can be performed at the same time to restore breasts for a more youthful look. Breast augmentation and reduction adjust breast shape and volume while a lift removes excess skin and tightens the areas surrounding the breasts. In addition to the breast procedures mentioned above, body procedures can be combined as well.

Body procedures can be combined to achieve a leaner contour as liposuction removes unwanted fat while abdominoplasty (tummy tuck) eliminates loose, hanging skin. Breast surgery and body contouring procedures are commonly combined in a procedure known as mommy makeover to help women achieve pre-baby bodies.

It’s important for patients to have good overall health prior to choosing combination procedures as time under anesthesia is longer and complication risk can increase. After surgery, Dr. Whiteman strongly recommends adapting a healthy diet and regular exercise routine to maintain and improve plastic surgery results. Dr. Whiteman shares his special interest of health and wellness through his blog including exercise and diet tips, healthy recipes, and safely healing from your procedure.
