“Thanks to Botox and fillers, as well as the work that I’ve already had,
my face pretty much maintains itself.” -Dolly Parton
Cosmetic injectables are the temporary, non-surgical defenders from one of the most common signs of aging, wrinkles. Providing effective facial rejuvenation, many Southern Plastic Surgery patients choose facial injectables because treatments are quick and require minimal downtime (meaning no surgery, scars or incisions required). Depending on your specific anti-aging concerns and goals, cosmetic injectables can leave the skin wrinkle-free for four months to over a year.
This month, we want to help ease your aging woes and invite you to try (or revisit for those familiar) these great anti-aging treatments. We are featuring a special on cosmetic injectable packages featuring two popular treatments: Xeomin® and Radiesse®:
Xeomin® – If you’ve ever tried Botox® in your lifetime then you are already familiar with the general capabilities Xeomin® treatments can have. Both Xeomin® and Botox® are similar in that they contain the same botulinum toxin A and block the release of specific chemicals in facial muscles, stopping them from contracting and subsequently forming wrinkles on the forehead and around the eyes.
Radiesse® – As signs of aging seem to be most noticeable on the face, over time our cheeks may start to deflate and show excess skin as gravity takes its toll. Composed of naturally-occurring substances found in our bodies, Radiesse® re-plumps areas with lost facial volume and effectively smooths wrinkles and lines for patients experiencing moderate to minimal signs of aging or want to help maintain their previous plastic surgery results. Radiesse® is typically injected in the cheeks, mouth area and jaw line, to treat smile lines (wrinkles around the corners of the mouth), marionette lines (wrinkles on the cheeks) and jowls that have thinned due to lost collagen.

Rhinoplasty is the traditional facial procedure to resolve cosmetic and functional concerns of the nose. Whether a patient wishes to change the length of the bridge or eliminate a deviated septum that causes breathing problems, Dr. David Whiteman has over 20 years of surgical experience and has refined his techniques for nose surgery. He specializes in ethnic rhinoplasty as he has produced natural-looking results for patients of different backgrounds including African-American, Hispanic/Latino and Asian. Now he has developed and refined the use of facial fillers to rejuvenate the nose and surrounding area.
Facial fillers are non-surgical facial rejuvenation treatments in the form of an injectable. Composed of naturally-occurring substances found in the human body, facial fillers restore lost facial volume and smooths wrinkles and lines. Also known as dermal fillers or just simply fillers, these treatments are great for patients with moderate to minimal signs of aging or to help maintain plastic surgery results. While these are typically injected in the cheeks, mouth area, and jaw line, Dr. Whiteman now uses fillers to resolve nose issues.
For patients concerned with lost volume or a sunken nasal appearance, Dr. Whiteman can inject an amount of filler to restore the lost volume for a more balanced, youthful appearance. By adding volume, he can straighten the bridge or add volume to a flattened appearance. Patients also enjoy the benefits of minimal to no downtime and quick, short injections to treat targeted areas. However, while fillers can improve the bridge, tip, and base of the nose, it does not have permanent results like a rhinoplasty procedure and will require additional treatments over time.

Have you ever had those days where you have woken up to puffy eyes after a night of little sleep? A dulled complexion, dark circles under the eyes and noticeable bags are tell-tale signs that you did not get a good night’s rest. In reality, the amount of sleep your body gets can determine physical affects that are longer-lasting than you may realize. Double board certified plastic and reconstructive surgeon, Dr. David Whiteman discusses the importance of sleep in maintaining the face’s healthy glow and youthful appearance.
Lack of sleep can affect productivity, memory, weight and aging. When we sleep, our bodies go into “repair-mode” to mend the damage from daily activities by replacing old cells and stimulating new skin cell growth. When our bodies are not able to get the recommended 6-8 hours of uninterrupted sleep, they become stressed and release increased amounts of the hormone cortisol. The increase in cortisol can affect the skin’s collagen formation, which is beneficial in maintaining the skin’s elasticity and luminosity, and can lead to the formation of fine lines and wrinkles on the face. Initially, bags and dark circles under the eyes can be superficially treated with make-up or skin care products. However, as time progresses and the skin becomes lax it can make the face appear perpetually tired.
Dr. Whiteman often discusses with his patients the benefits of surgical and non-surgical facial rejuvenation options to correct visible signs of aging. FDA-approved injectables such as BOTOX® address facial wrinkles by relaxing the muscles that cause us to frown to reveal a smoother, more relaxed appearance. Dr. Whiteman also offers injectable facial fillers such as Restylane®, Juvéderm® and Dysport® as fast and effective treatments for patients experiencing volume loss in the eyes, forehead and cheeks, in addition to the treatment of fine lines and wrinkles.
For patients with more extensive signs of aging desiring more-permanent results, Dr. Whiteman performs eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty) by removing excess skin and fatty tissue around the eyes to restore the face to a more youthful and alert appearance.
