This month marks the start of summer and things have already started heating up around the city as a lot of you will be heading out of town, enjoying more friend and family gatherings and heading outdoors to soak up a good dose of Vitamin D.  Not only is June 21st the summer solstice but it also happens to be Father’s Day.  The Southern Plastic Surgery team certainly wants to extend a very happy Father’s Day wish to all the special men in each of your lives and I hope you make their day extra special this year!

atlanta restylane discountsWe understand that schedules can be tight this time of year and finding the best time to fit a surgical or nonsurgical procedure in can be tricky.  Surprisingly enough, downtime can be quite minimal for several procedures we perform so you don’t miss out on the important events coming up this season!  To kick off this month’s specials, let’s start with FDA-approved Restylane® Silk.  When we first introduced Restylane® Silk to patients earlier this year, our patients were pleased with its ability to provide subtle plumping of the lips.  When I say subtle I mean that it’s a “lighter” version of the original Restylane® facial filler due to the smaller granular substance that is able to get deeper into the delicate lines around the mouth.  Patients can get that pouty-lip look but still avoid the commonly overdone “duck lips.”  If you haven’t tried Restylane® or Restylane® Silk yet, check out our flyer for details on our treatment packages that are good now until June 30th, 2015.

Some of you may remember a few weeks ago I shared that I had the honor of speaking at the 2015 Aesthetic Plastic Surgery Meeting to a select group of doctors on the topic of tummy tucks (abdominoplasty).  My scarpa fascia flap abdominoplasty technique has become a staple for helping patients achieve not only a flatter midsection, but one with curves and I’m hoping that I was able to encourage other doctors from all around the world to do their part in improving our tummy tuck patient’s results.  By utilizing the scarpa fascia tummy tuck technique when performing tummy tucks, a more defined contour of the waistline (think along the lines of an hourglass shape).

Be sure to check out our flyers for more details on the SPS specials, plus Laser Lights Cosmetic Laser Center has a few Father’s Day specials you may want to take advantage of.  If you have any questions regarding the specials or any of the reconstructive or cosmetic plastic surgery procedures I perform, don’t hesitate to give us a call at 770-622-9100.  You can also stay connected with me, Dr. David Whiteman, on Facebook, Twitter and Google+.  We wish everyone has a great start to their summer season and hope to see many new and familiar faces very soon!

Non-Surgical Rhinoplasty Treatments to Address the Nose

Rhinoplasty is the traditional facial procedure to resolve cosmetic and functional concerns of the nose. Whether a patient wishes to change the length of the bridge or eliminate a deviated septum that causes breathing problems, Dr. David Whiteman has over 20 years of surgical experience and has refined his techniques for nose surgery. He specializes in ethnic rhinoplasty as he has produced natural-looking results for patients of different backgrounds including African-American, Hispanic/Latino and Asian. Now he has developed and refined the use of facial fillers to rejuvenate the nose and surrounding area.southern plastic surgery

Facial fillers are non-surgical facial rejuvenation treatments in the form of an injectable. Composed of naturally-occurring substances found in the human body, facial fillers restore lost facial volume and smooths wrinkles and lines. Also known as dermal fillers or just simply fillers, these treatments are great for patients with moderate to minimal signs of aging or to help maintain plastic surgery results. While these are typically injected in the cheeks, mouth area, and jaw line, Dr. Whiteman now uses fillers to resolve nose issues.

For patients concerned with lost volume or a sunken nasal appearance, Dr. Whiteman can inject an amount of filler to restore the lost volume for a more balanced, youthful appearance. By adding volume, he can straighten the bridge or add volume to a flattened appearance. Patients also enjoy the benefits of minimal to no downtime and quick, short injections to treat targeted areas. However, while fillers can improve the bridge, tip, and base of the nose, it does not have permanent results like a rhinoplasty procedure and will require additional treatments over time.

Frequently Asked Questions on Natural Ethnic Rhinoplasty Answered

Recent studies gathered by the American Academy of Facial Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery (AAFPRS) revealed a 10% increase in facial plastic surgery for African American, Asian, and Hispanic/Latino patients with rhinoplasty as the most popular procedure. Double board certified plastic surgeon Dr. David Whiteman has served the Atlanta area for over 20 years and understands the importance of achieving long-lasting, natural results specific to his patient’s aesthetic goals and body structure.

Plastic Surgery in Atlanta GAHe has developed a natural “implantless rhinoplasty technique” to achieve the best results tailored to complement the different cultural traits among his ethnic patients. To help patients learn more about his natural technique, he’s answered a few frequently asked questions about ethnic rhinoplasty:

Q.) What is an “implantless technique” for rhinoplasty?

Instead of using silicone implants or other artificial materials, I graft my patient’s own skin, bone, and tissue to augment areas of their nose. Using the patient’s own materials significantly reduces the risk of complications and provides a more natural-looking result. Ethnic patients’ nose structures are all different so implants may be ineffective. For example, Hispanic patients have slightly weaker nasal bridges and African-American patients have more fibrous tissue, which both may not effectively support a facial implant.

Q.) Why is using my own tissue better than implants for facial plastic surgery?

By using your own tissue, your risk of post-operative complications is greatly reduced. Instead of using a foreign substance, the body’s natural bone, cartilage, fat, and tissue can be used without high risk of infection or rejection. Also, rhinoplasty results tend to be more subtle and natural-looking than those created with an implant.

Q.) Will my downtime be shorter by avoiding implants in rhinoplasty?

The risk of complications is reduced, but the downtime associated with your procedure is dependent on your individual rhinoplasty procedure. By following prescribed aftercare instructions, attending follow-up appointments, and avoiding strenuous activity, many patients can gradually return to regular activity after a week.

Q.) Are there any non-surgical options to restore areas of lost volume?

To address lost volume for the face, we provide minimally invasive facial fillers including Juvéderm®, Expression® and Restylane® to restore thinning areas that show wrinkles and fine lines with little to no downtime. Fillers can improve the appearance of nasolabial folds and the cheeks for a more balanced, youthful result. They can also be administered to the nasal dorsum as a non-surgical alternative for rhinoplasty. As an alternative to grafting cartilage for the nose, facial fillers can be used to restore the same volume.
