February Skincare and Plastic Surgery Savings You’ll Love

Happy February everyone! It’s been a great start to the year and the Southern Plastic Surgery (SPS) team can already tell it’s going to be even better than the last. Some of you may not know this fun fact, but SPS has a premier cosmetic laser center, Laser Lights Cosmetic Laser Center, which was founded back in 1999 along with co-founder Patti Daniel. Now that it’s official, I am pleased to share with you that I am the new sole owner of Laser Lights, now that Patti has retired to be closer to her family, and we have big plans for both practices – ones we hope you’ll love (we will be featuring brand new skincare packages, diverse monthly specials and events, and lots of updates on what’s going on in and around all of our offices so keep checking back in the future for more big announcements).

When we first started Laser Lights, I wanted to give my plastic surgery patients access to both surgical and nonsurgical skincare treatments because it’s always been a belief of mine that surgery doesn’t end once you’re sent home after your procedure. By combining skincare treatments (for instance scar treatment therapy), I’ve found that my patients are much happier with their plastic surgery results and have even discovered new anti-aging services in the process.  Think of Laser Lights as the perfect complement to keeping skin looking youthful from top to bottom and a direct extension of the SPS family.

With Valentine’s Day coming up, we definitely want to help you look and feel your absolute best, in case you’re preparing for a big date. Whether you are looking for laser hair removal, wrinkle reduction with facial fillers and Botox®, tattoo removal, spider vein removal treatments, age spots, nonsurgical facial rejuvenation, you name it – we’ve got the right laser treatment for you. If lasers aren’t what the doctor prescribes, we also offer a bevy of other cosmetic procedures ranging from chemical peels, microdermabrasion, and cellulite reduction to massage therapy services, acne treatments, waxing, and more. February’s specials include:

  • Laser Hair Removal Packages
  • Réjuvapen® Microneedling with HGF Treatments
  • Fractionated CO2 Laser Skin Resurfacing Treatments
  • Viora Reaction™ Skin Tightening & Cellulite Reduction Treatments
  • Laser Tattoo Removal Packages

This is only a small fraction of Laser Lights’ skincare services so explore our website to learn more about what we do there, or better yet, stop by and meet the great staff that’s committed to helping all of my patients achieve their skincare goals (Laser Lights is less than a mile from the SPS office and they speak Spanish too!). All of our specials are valid now until February 29th, 2016; some exclusions may apply so be sure to check out the specials flyers for details. If you’re interested in discussing your plastic surgery goals or learning more about our skincare treatments, please don’t hesitate to contact me, Dr. David Whiteman, today. We hope everyone has a great month and look forward to seeing new and familiar faces soon!

New Year, New Resolutions

By now you’re probably tired of seeing the trillions of lists on the internet trying to help you figure out what your goals are for the New Year. Whether you call them goals, resolutions, dreams, aspirations, or simply whatever you like best, the theme remains the same – a chance to improve on some aspect of your life. I find that many of my patients start the year off with such great motivation and intensity but often have difficulty sticking to their original plan as the year gets busier and everyday distractions get in the way.  As a double-board certified plastic surgeon with over 22 years of practice, my job is not only to help patients attain their plastic surgery goals but also to encourage maintaining the results long after you’ve left my office. But how you may be wondering? With a new year and new resolutions!

Plastic surgery is a choice and it can certainly help patients regain their confidence when it comes to how they feel about their appearance. What it’s not is a weight-loss tool. Yes body contouring procedures like the mommy makeover, Grammy makeover, liposuction, and tummy tuck can help achieve a slimmer, more sculpted body, but what do you think happens to your figure if you go back to eating unhealthily, leading a predominately sedentary lifestyle, and barely working out? Well, the same stubborn fat can come back and ultimately reverse the plastic surgery results you worked so hard to get.

Whether you’re seeking a breast surgery procedure like as breast augmentation, breast lift, breast reduction, or more concerned with anti-aging facial procedures such as rhinoplasty, blepharoplasty, or facelift, I will help you to achieve the plastic surgery results you’ve always wanted. It’s no surprise that one of the most common resolutions for the start of the year includes some form of health. From taking the first steps to major weight loss or wanting to unearth that 6-pack from the college days, as a society weight management tends to be a big focus when it comes to maintaining a balanced diet/exercise routine. The health benefits alone should be reason enough to join a gym or incorporate daily walking into your schedule, but it’s sticking with it that can be the challenge.

Since plastic surgery should never be a “fix-all” weight loss solution, we’ve taken our commitment to improved health one step further at Southern Plastic Surgery.  For several years now, we have provided all of our patients the opportunity to take the first steps towards healthy lifestyle changes by giving them direct access to our in-house NESTA Weight Management Specialist, Jackie Madison and Daryl Madison, experienced ACE certified personal trainer. The Lifestyle & Weight Management program specifically helps coach you through your pre- and post-surgery journey by teaching you how to commit to an active lifestyle, achieve weight loss and weight management goals, provide effective eating habits, manage your time and assist with battling stress. You’ll be amazed at the results you can achieve when you have the right motivation in your corner.

To help you start looking towards a brighter year, we’re offering a Mommy Makeover special for patients interested in combination breast and body procedures. Combine a tummy tuck + any cosmetic breast procedure and receive $500 OFF your surgery. Don’t let the idea that plastic surgery isn’t affordable deter you from giving the gift you’ve always wanted to yourself; check out our special plastic surgery financing or give us a call at 770-622-9100 with any questions you may have! My Patient Experience: Mommy Makeover Recovery

Some of you may remember me; I am the mother of three who first wrote about my mommy makeover consultation experience with Dr. Whiteman last month. As I reread my first entry, it’s hard to believe that November 11th (when I had my consultation and scheduled my procedure in the same day) was only a few short weeks ago and here I am, one week mommy makeover post-op, able to share my unbelievable experience again with you all. For any fellow mothers out there, the physical changes that even one childbirth can bring, let alone three, is something many of us don’t want to have as a permanent reminder. My small breasts and stomach pooch were two areas that I knew I wasn’t going to be able to fix on my own. Now, after the encouragement of my family, two meetings with Dr. Whiteman and his team, and a mommy makeover later, I can proudly say I finally have my body back and it’s even better than before!

The morning of December 22, 2015 my daughter drove me to the office where my procedure was to take place. Pretty sure I didn’t sleep the night before due to nerves but once I got dressed, hooked up to the machines and had the nurses explain just about every detail of the process, I was more excited than anything else. Dr. Whiteman came in and made a few drawings (similar to the ones he demonstrated during my TouchMD consultation) as guides for the surgery, I said goodbye to my daughter and when I awoke, it felt as if I had taken a quick cat nap. When I looked down at my chest I saw something I hadn’t seen since the early 90’s – perky cleavage (I have to admit I was a little bummed not being able to see my new breasts immediately, but I know good things come to those who wait, so I was patient)! Before I was able to go home the nurses went over vital post-operative mommy makeover recovery guidelines and I was free to start my recovery.

I work in the education system and specifically chose the holidays for my surgery because I have mandatory time off and was told that recovery from a breast augmentation and tummy tuck (the two procedures that made up my unique mommy makeover) would only take about two weeks. Each person is different, so I took this as a general rule but let me tell you all something, if you follow your pre-op tips and suggestions and stick to your post-op rules diligently, recovery is a breeze! I say this because after three natural births, this is NOTHING like that experience.

Prior to my surgery I wasn’t an active person in the sense of being a gym rat but I was more of the take the stairs instead of the elevator kind of “health conscious” individual. To prepare for the tummy tuck portion I upped my water intake (meaning I drank nothing but water), incorporated daily sit-ups into my morning and evening routine, and restricted meals to before 6pm. Not a huge demanding lifestyle change by any means, but I have to admit it was much needed encouragement. My biggest concern was maintaining my mommy makeover results so I was determined to follow each and every instruction given to me.

The first day or two was more about getting used to the feeling of heavier breasts and a tighter stomach. If I had to put it into words, it felt more like I had an intense gym workout and was sore the day after from maxing out on crunches and ab work. Moving around was obviously at a snail’s pace but the recommended breathing exercises helped to really help me maneuver around. Before your surgery Dr. Whiteman goes over pain management options you have to choose from and you’re sent home with just about everything you could need from compression garments to keep everything nice and tight, to antibiotics for the first week of recovery. After the one week mark I went back to Dr. Whiteman’s for my first follow-up consultation. This was the first time I was actually able to see my healing progress and hear from Dr. Whiteman on how I was coming along – not that it was a surprise to me, but I am healing remarkably well and have very minimal swelling left (did I mention it’s only been a week?).

If you’re like me you did your research. Of course I had a million and one questions for Dr. Whiteman but I did research at home to try to feed my curiosity. I watched YouTube videos (not for the faint of heart and to be honest was quite dramatic now that I look back on it) and read just about every public online forum regarding tummy tucks and breast augmentation. Nothing can really prepare you for an elective surgery but I’m hoping that my story can give you a different perspective. I’m 50 and this was my first surgery ever. If I could give readers three pieces of advice it would be this:

  • If you’re conscious of really listening to your body and what it needs, like rest, hydration, ice, etc., then I truly do believe your recovery would be just as easy as mine has been.
  • Don’t think you’re “too old” for plastic surgery – you’re not and you’ll only kick yourself for not having done it sooner.
  • Choose Dr. Whiteman. There’s a reason they call it the “Fab Ab” Tummy Tuck.
