History of the Tummy Tuck

One of the most popular procedures I have performed on both male and female patients has been tummy tuck surgery, also known as abdominoplasty. Unlike other body contouring procedures such as liposuction, which does not eliminate loose skin or target muscle separation, tummy tucks are specifically designed to remove excess skin and fat from the abdominal area. In order to produce a flat, smooth contour on the midsection, over the years I have perfected innovative techniques that have evolved over decades of procedures performed around the world. But have you ever wondered how tummy tucks today got their start?

atlanta Tummy Tuck SurgeryModern plastic surgery first began in the 1800’s when doctors revived techniques that were first discovered by early cultures who used portions of stretched skin to cover open wounds. As time progressed, physicians introduced medical advances in surgery techniques due to treating millions of wounded World War I soldiers. In 1890 the first recorded tummy tuck, known then as a   dermolipectomy, was performed in France by Drs. Demars and Marx.  In the United States, the first tummy tuck was performed in Baltimore, Maryland by a gynecologic surgeon named Dr. Kelly in 1899.

During a tummy tuck procedure, incisions are made in the lower abdominal region between the hips; the loose skin and unwanted fat are removed, followed by repairing the weakened abdominal muscles. By repairing affected abdominal muscles, the midsection maintains an even smoother appearance. If there are still remaining areas of unwanted fat in the hips, flanks, or back, liposuction may be combined with tummy tuck surgery to remove the fat. Over my 20 plus years of practice, I have perfected a specialized tummy tuck technique, which involves tapering the Scarpa fascia portion of the abdominal region to enhance waist narrowing. By utilizing these methods, abdominoplasty results can produce an improved waist definition in proportion to a natural body structure.

While tummy tucks can help you achieve personal cosmetic surgery goals, it is important to remember it should not be a substitute for weight loss or a healthy lifestyle. Post-surgery, I advise my patients to maintain proper nutrition and exercise regularly in order to preserve positive results. Common Reasons for Undergoing Liposuction

As the weather begins to heat up, patients become eager to look their very best, as it is time to showcase their bodies. But for some, slipping on a swimsuit or other minimal clothing when they don’t feel confident could sometimes be a big deterrent. Dr. David Whiteman provides body contouring procedures such as liposuction to give his patients that coveted, aesthetically pleasing figure they dream of. According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), 200,000 liposuction procedures were performed in 2013 and one of the top five cosmetic surgical procedures performed. If you’re considering a body contouring procedure, Dr. Whiteman discusses common reasons patients choose liposuction:

1.      You’re unable to get rid of those extra couple pounds even though you’ve been following a strict diet and exercise regimen.

Maintaining a healthy lifestyle is important to maximize your body contouring results. If you need assistance, our in-house NESTA Weight Management Specialist, Jackie Madison provides a Lifestyle & Weight Management program, in which Jackie coaches patients through their pre and post-surgery time period by helping to achieve weight loss and weight management goals, and provide effective eating habits.  Our outside ACE Certified Personal Trainer Daryl Madison of Lifestyle Fitness can also help find a routine that works best for you!

2.     You want to boost your self-confidence.

It is important to remember that there is no such thing as a “perfect” body and imperfections are what make each individual unique. Depending your goals, Dr. Whiteman will talk with you to determine which liposuction technique will best fit your needs. Dr. Whiteman has been performing liposuction for over 20 years and uses the most advanced liposuction techniques including tumescent, super-wet, power-assisted, and ultrasound-assisted liposuction to provide patients with optimal results.

3.     You’ve experienced a fluctuation in your weight.

Whether you’re in the process of losing or gaining pounds, we all battle with reaching our goal weight. Dr. Whiteman uses liposuction to remove unwanted fat cells through a cannula, or tiny hollow tube, through small, surgical incisions. Whatever your “problem areas” are, liposuction addresses areas such as the abdomen, love handles, thighs, buttocks, and hips, however, Dr. Whiteman always reminds patients that plastic surgery is never a substitute for healthy living.
