The BOTOX® Basics

As reported in the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) 2013 statistics, botulinum toxin A, otherwise known as BOTOX® ranked as the number one non-surgical procedure with 6,321,160 treatments performed that year alone. This FDA-approved injectable is an anti-aging substance that helps eliminate fine facial lines, frown lines, and other facial wrinkles caused by muscle activity. Having achieved my “Platinum Level Status” as a BOTOX® Cosmetic injector, I ensure my patients’ optimal results as well as address each patient’s unique needs for facial rejuvenation.

Prior to cosmetic use, the injectable was used for individuals who were suffering from muscle spasms of the face and eyes which in turn proved the future efficacy in eliminating wrinkles and fine lines.

Also known as a “lunch-hour procedure” because it takes very little time to perform, BOTOX® can effectively treat facial wrinkles, though very differently than other facial treatments. While most facial fillers plump up areas of the face which are lacking in supportive tissue or fat deposits, BOTOX® Cosmetic blocks the release of certain chemicals in facial muscles, preventing them from contracting and forming wrinkles. BOTOX® is also used to temporarily remove frown lines, fine lines and other types of facial wrinkles caused by expression and its effects can last for several months following the cosmetic skin treatment.

For patients looking to address other areas of the face such as the cheeks, chin, lips, or nasolabial folds, I offer a variety of facial fillers including Restylane®, Juvéderm®, Voluma™, and Radiesse®.  While all of these types of injections target the signs of aging, they do not permanently stop the aging process. Additional treatments are necessary to maintain results.

Can Facial Plastic Surgery Turn Back the Clock on My Appearance?

One of the main reasons why plastic surgery patients choose facial procedures is to reduce the signs of aging that appear in the form of wrinkles, fine lines, and sagging skin. With over 20 years of surgical experience, Dr. David Whiteman understands that facial plastic surgery can significantly rejuvenate a person’s appearance. While these procedures can restore a more youthful appearance, Dr. Whiteman always reminds patients to maintain realistic expectations and understand that plastic surgery does not slow down the body’s natural aging process.

Cosmetic injectables such as Botox® smooth out wrinkles on the forehead and near the eyes. Facial fillers like Juvéderm® and Restylane® restore lost volume in areas like the cheeks and lips. Since these procedures are non-surgical, patients can benefit from minimal to no downtime and shorter treatment times as injections typically take 10-20 minutes to complete.

For patients with more noticeable signs of aging such as deeper wrinkles and lines and/or lax skin, Dr. Whiteman performs a variety of facial procedures from rhinoplasty and eyelid lifts to facelift surgery. During a facelift, he removes excess, sagging skin and re-tightens muscle and tissue to smooth wrinkles and refill areas of lost volume. Patients who are only concerned with certain areas can choose mini facelift or brow lift surgery to target isolated areas of concern.

In addition to facial procedures, Dr. Whiteman performs a variety of plastic surgery procedures for the breasts and body.
