Battle of the Bulge: Waist Training vs. Body Contouring

fad, noun – an intense and widely shared enthusiasm for something, especially one that is short-lived and without basis in the object’s qualities; a craze.

Seems like every day there is a new fad featured on television talk shows, radio commercials, magazine articles, billboards, social media, you name it, that EVERYONE just has to try.  I don’t normally pay attention to these types of things simply because just as soon as I’ve started doing my research it’s no longer a “thing” anymore (not to mention in a week nobody will remember it even existed).  If you’ve heard the term “waist training” recently then perhaps you were as curious as I was about this new “body contouring” craze.  Now there hasn’t been long term studies done on waist training but I wanted to share my initial thoughts on this and whether you should consider this type of investment over surgical and nonsurgical fat reduction procedures.

liposuction-atlanta-georgiaPopular celebrities are flooding Instagram with images of their tiny hourglass figures and telling people all across the country that a corset can essentially help you achieve the waist of Barbie and Ken.  What they are essentially doing is wearing a corset-type mechanism that covers the area below the breasts down to just above the hips with the intent that it’s to be worn from sun up to sun down.  Over time, the waist training is supposed to flatten any extra bulge and create a slimmer abdominal contour like those of a tummy tuck or liposuction.

So the million dollar question – does it really work?  Based on what I know about accumulating fat and manipulating the contours of the body, my impression is that it’s a superficial treatment, at best, and you should put your hard earned money towards something safer, longer-lasting and more beneficial.  The problem with waist training is that it isn’t addressing the underlying fat cells – unless fat cells are literally removed from the body there is only so much diet, exercise or rib crushing corsets can do to help get rid of it; sorry folks.  It’s more like the functionality of say a bra (they provide a nice hammock for the breasts but the minute you take it off, gravity kicks in) or butt pad inserts for women who are better off getting a Brazilian butt lift instead of worrying if the pads look natural or don’t shift while enhancing the derrière.  The potential health risks from waist training are also something to consider – damage to major internal organs, bruising, cause dizziness and even fainting (think too tight to breath and multiply that by 24 hours).  Overall, altering the waist long term is just not possible without plastic surgery and your waist will eventually go back to the way it was over time and you’d have potentially wasted time, money and possibly your sanity.

Long story short, stick to the old fashioned way of getting into shape by actively incorporating good ole’ diet and exercise into your routine.  If at any point you decide that the stubborn fat of your midsection gets to be too much to tolerate, there are several procedures I, Dr. David Whiteman, perform that can get to the root of your issue and help you achieve the midsection you goaled to have.  Feel free to contact Southern Plastic Surgery if you have any questions at all regarding our face, body and breast procedures.  In the meantime, you can always stay connected with me, on Facebook, Twitter and Google+ and share your thoughts on some of these new cosmetic procedures and fads!

Popular Plastic Surgery Procedures: Belly Button & Below

To me, plastic surgery is such a diverse field.  I am able to work with men and women of all ages and walks of life and each person has their unique desires and motivations for enhancing their lives physically and mentally.  When it comes to body contouring, as an Atlanta cosmetic surgeon I have worked with patients ranging from a mother who is hanging up her pregnancy hat and ready to get her pre-baby body back to men who have lost significant weight and want to add the finishing touches of eliminating excess skin.  From tummy tucks to liposuction, there are many cosmetic plastic surgery procedures within the body contouring umbrella and I wanted to share two of the most popular procedures that accentuate the body from the belly button, down:

plastic surgery-tummy tuck - buttock augmentation atlanta georgiaTummy Tuck considerably the most popular of the body contouring procedures, tummy tucks (also known as abdominoplasty) are designed to create a smoother midsection.  I still utilize the traditional method of removing excess skin and fat and retightening the abdominal muscle that may have become weakened due to pregnancy.  My preferred method is a “no-drain” abdominoplasty which eliminates the extra space within the abdomen that collects fluid (and subsequently requires a drain to help clear out the fluid during recovery) by suturing the remaining skin and fat together down towards the muscle.  What this does is it not only allows my tummy tuck patients to have better control of their abdominal movements (because you’re not delaying the natural healing of the fat to the muscle when you twist or contort the body) but also makes recovery much less complex or difficult.

In addition to the no-drain abdominoplasty, I utilize a special Scarpa fascia waist contouring technique that I developed over the past several years to produce a flat, smooth contour for a patient’s midsection.  This is significant because previously these results were only possible with liposuction alone; now, I am able to improve the contours and shape of the abdomen with the Scarpa fascia technique so the stomach and waistline is shapelier than traditional tummy tuck results can produce.

Buttock Augmentation Buttock augmentation has seen a surge of popularity in recent years and I would argue that we can thank popular culture for this increasing trend.  Also known as Brazilian butt lift, this procedure is commonly performed through a fat transfer process for patients who wish to enhance the shape of their derrières.  The fat transfer process uses injections consisting of the patient’s own fat from other areas obtained through liposuction around the buttocks, thighs, hips or abdomen.  Once I have taken an ample amount of donated fat, it is then purified and re-injected into the predetermined areas of the buttocks.   A benefit of fat transfer is that by using a patient’s own fat, it allows me to sculpt the injected fat into a more naturally-prominent buttock, plus, the fat transfer technique for Brazilian butt lift also significantly decreases the risk of complications associated with the introduction of a foreign object into the body, like butt implants.

Buttock Augmentation Popularity Surges According to Latest Statistics

With each new year comes new statistical research within our plastic surgery culture.  These statistics share interesting findings from shifts in surgical trends to the most favored cosmetic procedures performed.  Body contouring procedures such as liposuction, tummy tuck and mommy makeover remain some of the most popular surgeries among patients today, however, according to the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS) there are new trends emerging in the United States.  In initial 2013 statistics released by ASAPS, buttock augmentation dramatically surged in popularity with a 58% increase in procedures performed over the past year.

brazilian butt lift atlanta gaPopular celebrities with a large presence on social media and television including Kim Kardashian, Jennifer Lopez and Nicki Minaj are most notably known for their curvy physiques and sculpted derrières.  Today’s trends clearly show the increasing popularity for women desiring similar, more contoured figures not just in the waist and hips but also the buttocks.  Double board certified plastic and reconstructive surgeon Dr. David Whiteman performs buttock augmentation, also known as Brazilian butt lift, for his patients wishing to enhance the size and curve of their buttocks.

Brazilian butt lift is commonly performed through a fat transfer process which harvests unwanted fat from one area of the body to transfer to the buttocks.  Dr. Whiteman first performs fat transfer using liposuction to remove fat cells through a cannula, or tiny hollow tube, and can remove fat from areas such as your thighs, back, hips or abdomen.  The donated fat is next purified and re-injected into predetermined areas on your buttocks.  By using a patient’s own fat during this shape-modifying procedure, it allows Dr. Whiteman to sculpt the injected fat into a more naturally enhanced buttock.  Fat transfer is Dr. Whiteman’s preferred technique for butt augmentation as it significantly reduces the risk of complication that can be associated with the introduction of a foreign object into the body, such as implants.

Dr. Whiteman meets with each patient during a consultation to evaluate the amount of donated fat needed, the desired sites where the injections will go, as well as the number and depth of the injections when determining your desired plastic surgery results.  Finding a board-certified plastic surgeon with extensive knowledge and experience is very important when undergoing any cosmetic surgery procedure, not only to maximize your safety but to ensure long-lasting results.
