Breast Augmentation FAQs

If you’ve been debating whether or not to get your breasts enhanced, now’s the time to take your first step to achieving the look you really want. In order to ease any apprehensions you may have, I have broken down the top common questions patients typically ask before/after undergoing breast augmentation surgery:

Q: Who is a candidate for breast augmentation surgery?
Breast SizeA: From graduation gifts to a mother of three wanting to restore her pre-baby body, breast augmentation is reserved for women of all ages. The ideal candidate should however be at least 18 years old and physically and emotionally mature.  Breast augmentation is ideal for anyone wishing to increase the size and volume of their breasts.

Q: How do you determine what size breast implants are right for me?
A: There isn’t a “one size fits all” method to choosing breast implants and the sizing of your implants is completely customized for you. During your consultation, we will discuss your personal plastic surgery goals, medical history, and different breast enlargement techniques and implant options that showcase the most natural looking results. To determine which type of breast implant is right for you, whether it is silicone, saline or gummy bear implants, I will take full body measurements including height, weight, rib cage size, and current breast size. Additionally, you can physically try on different implant sizes to test which size and type of breast implant will help best achieve the look you desire.

Q: How long do implants last?
A: Breast implants have the possibility of lasting a lifetime. However, manufacturers do not consider them “lifetime devices.” It is important to attend follow-up appointments with your plastic surgeon and contact him or her if you have any questions or notice anything unusual.

Q: How long does it take to recover from breast augmentation surgery?
A: Following your surgery, your breasts will be wrapped in gauze and an elastic bandage or support bra in order to minimize swelling and support the breasts as they heal post-surgery. Recovery time differs for each patient and will be discussed during your consultation. Multiple factors such as the type of incision you receive, or the type of procedure you have, determine the length of time you will have to wait before returning to everyday activities. A majority of patients are typically able to return to work within a week and can engage in physical activity within four to six weeks. By adapting a healthy diet and exercise regimen, you can maintain and improve your breast enhancement results.

Choosing Breast Implants

According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons’ statistics, Breast augmentation surgery has remained the most frequently pursued surgical cosmetic procedure for the past five years. Breast augmentation surgery is designed to enhance the size and shape of a woman’s breasts. For patients considering breast augmentation surgery, size is often their first consideration when thinking about implants. However, it is imperative to consider several other breast implant decisions such as shape, texture, and type to achieve a natural-looking balance between breast size and body type.

Before selecting a size or texture, it is important to understand silicone and saline are commonly used breast implant types. Saline breast implants, as the name implies, are filled with sterilized saline solution surrounded by a strong silicone shell. They pose few health risks if the implants should leak or burst because saline can be safely absorbed into the body. Silicone breast implants are made with the same type of silicone outer shell, but are filled with silicone gel. There are three, FDA approved breast implant manufacturers: Mentor, Sientra , and Allergan. Sientra was the first manufacturer to offer a high-strength cohesive silicone gel.   Dr. David Whiteman makes all of these options are available to Southern Plastic Surgery patients.

Depending on the type; implants also come in different shapes and textures. The breast implant shell can be shaped round or contoured like a teardrop. They can either be smooth or textured to prevent the implant from moving. These decisions will dictate which implant type is best for your needs. For example, saline breast implants are available in teardrop and round, but teardrop saline implants are only available with a textured surface to prevent the implant from moving around within the breast cavity.

As most patients know, breast implants come in a variety of sizes to accommodate different body types. Most people are familiar with the typical bra cup sizes of A,B,C, etc. measurements. Breast implants are slightly different because they are measured based on volume. According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, an average of 189 cubic centimeters of saline is needed to increase a breast size by “one cup.” It is very important to consider various aspects of a patient’s body, such as height, weight, previous breast size, and rib cage size to decide which implant size would be proportionally best. Some patients may also opt for breast lift surgery to raise the position of the breasts on the chest.

Dr. David Whiteman understands each patient’s needs and goals are different, so he can help you choose which type is best for you during a consultation.
