Nat’l Breast Cancer Awareness Month: October 15th Marks BRA Day

October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month and October 15th, 2014 marks BRA Day, or Breast Reconstruction Awareness Day, celebrating raising awareness and education on post-mastectomy breast reconstruction surgery  options. According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), 95,589 breast reconstruction procedures were performed in 2013. With over 20 years of experience as a double-board certified plastic and reconstructive surgeon, I have witnessed firsthand the toll that breast cancer has on a woman.  I believe it is important to actively educate my patients about reconstruction options to help them on their journey to healing both physically and emotionally.

breast reconstruction in atlanta georgiaAfter undergoing a mastectomy or lumpectomy following a diagnosis, a breast cancer survivor can be overcome by a lack of self-confidence. Prior to your procedure, I will examine the skin, muscle, and residual breast tissue, and depending on the patient’s individual situation and goals, to create a personalized breast reconstruction treatment plan to provide the most natural-looking results.

If the patient doesn’t have a suitable amount of tissue, I generally insert a silicone or saline implant and tissue expanders, which are balloon-like devices inserted under the skin to progressively stretch the skin, to allow space for the breast implant. Another option is flap reconstruction which includes harvesting healthy tissue, skin, muscle, and fat from another area of the body to rebuild the breast mound. My overall goal is to exchange the patient’s breast tissue, skin, and the nipple-areolar that were removed during a mastectomy or lumpectomy and construct new breasts that look natural and fit the patient’s body accordingly. The nipple and areola can also be rebuilt with the use of cosmetic tattooing.

To further celebrate Breast Cancer Awareness, I encourage you to get involved with The Sport of Giving, a 501(c)(3) grassroots organization supporting women’s cancer care and prevention with special fundraiser events or another organization of your choice. I also recommend getting involved with Life After the Fight, to help promote breast cancer survivors’ professional ventures.

Breast & Body Procedures to Restore Your Pre-Baby Appearance

Pregnancy and childbirth can take a major toll on your body physically and often women battle with weight fluctuation, change in breast shape and size, sagging skin, or stretch marks as a result. It is important that female patients wait until after they are finished having children before considering any type of plastic surgery as additional pregnancies can reverse your results. Typically, I recommend individual or combination breast and body contouring procedures such as breast augmentation, breast lift, tummy tuck, liposuction, or mommy makeover surgery for women who are looking to restore their confidence and undergo a complete rejuvenation.

Breast Augmentation: Breast augmentation surgery is ideal for women whose breasts have lost firmness or have shrunk due to childbearing and/or breastfeeding and wish to increase their overall breast size.  As each patient’s cosmetic goals are different, the correct type of breast implant will be determined during your consultation, at which time your objectives are discussed, measurements are taken, and you have the opportunity to try on various implant sizes and types to determine the best fit for your body.

Breast Lift: Patients with sagging, drooping breasts that lack firmness are ideal candidates for breast lift surgery, which restores the natural shape and proportion of the breasts. Multiple techniques are utilized when performing a breast lift and it is based on the size and shape of your breasts, the degree of sagging, as well as other factors. For minor correction to the placement of the breasts, mini breast lift surgery may also be performed. Breast lift surgery is often combined with breast augmentation or breast reduction to restore firmness and a higher breast position.

Tummy Tuck: During tummy tuck surgery, loose skin and unwanted fat are removed and weakened abdominal muscles are repaired. By mending affected muscles, the midsection sustains a smoother, flatter appearance and function is restored. If there are still remaining areas of unwanted fat in the hips, flanks, or back, liposuction may be combined with tummy tuck surgery to remove the fat.

Mini Tummy Tuck: For patients who don’t require muscle repair and only need skin and fat removed, I may recommend a mini tummy tuck.

Liposuction: To remove small pockets of fat, liposuction sculpts the body by removing stubborn areas of fat through a cannula, or tiny hollow tube, through minuscule, surgical incisions. Whatever your “problem areas” are, liposuction addresses areas such as the abdomen, love handles, thighs, buttocks, and hips.

Mommy Makeover: A mommy makeover is a comprehensive combination surgery incorporating both breast and body contouring procedures. If you suffer from sagging breasts or have lost volume, a breast augmentation or breast lift can be performed. To shape the areas on the abdomen where skin has stretched, tummy tuck surgery is performed to target excess fat and skin and re-tighten weakened abdominal muscles for a firmer, more contoured result. For isolated areas of stubborn fat, liposuction can additionally sculpt the midsection and other areas such as the thighs, hips, and arms.

Atlanta Breast Revision Surgery Featured Procedure Patient Testimonial

After having saline breast implants for 10 years, lasting through two pregnancies, Jenny came to see us for breast revision surgery.  She felt her current 400CC saline implants were too large but wasn’t quite decided on whether to have the implants completely removed or replaced altogether.

patientDuring her consultation with myself and Beth, my medical assistant, we discussed her experiences with her saline implants (she felt they were too heavy and mobile within the breast cavity) as well as several procedural options. Jenny is a mother of two and after listening to her concerns, we discussed performing combination procedures including breast lift, to address the effects of pregnancy, and liposuction to further contour and reduce the size of her breast.  We were confident that Jenny would be pleased with a smaller silicone implant, given her previous implant size, and were very excited about her results.

When we followed up with Jenny she expressed, “I can’t tell you how happy I am that you listened to all of the things that I was unhappy with, gave your recommendations and I listened to them.  All of the concerns I had about my saline implants have gone away now that I have the silicone implants and the biggest difference is that I now LITERALLY feel like a huge weight has been lifted off of my chest! Recovery was exactly what I expected and I was back to work in five days.  If I had to do it all over again, I would see Dr. Whiteman in a heartbeat.”
