Solutions to Post-Surgery Scarring

As with any surgical procedure, plastic surgery requires incisions whether you are seeking a breast augmentation, liposuction, tummy tuck, or a facelift; which often results in scarring. For many patients, an array of factors such as incision type, skin type, age, heredity, and even ethnicity can increase the chance of developing scars post-plastic surgery. To address scarring, I offer both topical and oral treatments. I will continue to do my part to meet your desired aesthetic goals, but I also place the utmost importance on pre- and post-surgery care in order to preserve your cosmetic surgery results, minimize scarring, and expedite positive recovery from surgery.

arnika forteTo reduce scarring, I offer the topical treatment, bioCorneum®, which is a patented gel that dries within minutes forming an invisible, breathable, and waterproof silicone barrier over the affected area. This topical gel allows the scar to mature through normal collagen synthesis cycles with twice daily application. Treatment has been shown to smooth scars and reduce discoloration; generally the recommended treatment time for newer scars is at least 60 to 90 days.

bioCorneumAdditionally, I also offer Arnika Forte™, which is an oral homeopathic pill that may be taken prior to your surgery to reduce bruising and swelling while promoting recovery.  This natural formula, containing a combination of Arnica Montana, Bromelain, Bioflavanoids, and Vitamin C, should be taken a couple days prior to your surgery and continued for several days in order to optimize cosmetic surgery results.

If you’ve undergone facial plastic surgery, I recommend any of the skincare products we carry at our office or skin treatments such as chemical peels and laser skin resurfacing at Laser Lights Cosmetic Center, which can help to improve your skin’s appearance and texture as well as assist with healing and scarring from surgery.

Your Cosmetic Surgery Checklist

Before undergoing plastic surgery, I always advise my patients to really think carefully about what you want and why you want it while also maintaining realistic expectations. Regardless if you choose to have a surgical or non-surgical cosmetic procedure, it is important to approach all cosmetic procedures in a safe and judicious way. Take time to evaluate all of your options and not rush the process, no matter how eager you are to have the surgery.

During your initial consultation, I will provide you with all the information you need to make a fully informed decision and put in the time necessary to listen to and fully understand your individual goals and desires. You will not be pressured into a procedure which will not help you — in fact on many occasions I discourage patients from procedures which will not give them the greatest cosmetic surgery results. I have shared the following checklist to help you better decide if you’re ready to undergo surgery and help you determine what is best for you.

Really think about your expectations and goals. The decision to have plastic surgery should be taken seriously.  You need to be honest with yourself about what you want to have done and the results you anticipate to achieve.

Do your research. Do your homework before going forward with any procedure. Research your doctor, the procedure, the benefits, risks, cost, pre and post-surgery care, hospital accommodations, and recovery. It is crucial that you spend time studying and looking for information precise to the surgery you are considering.

Have a thorough consultation. This is your time to ask as many questions as you want and voice your concerns regarding your surgery and view before and after results for plastic surgery. For example, ask “What are the risks and complications associated with my breast augmentation?” The purpose of the consultation is to make sure that you are given all the essential information to make an informed choice. This process is imperative to help ensure that you are not approaching the procedure with an unrealistic notion of what can be accomplished. Being clear and specific about what problem areas bother you can help to achieve the best results.

Consider all of your options. Give yourself some time to think about your options, deliberate what you discussed during your consultation and the potential benefits and risks of having your procedure.

Utilize a financial plan. Most cosmetic surgery procedures comprise three costs: anesthesia fees, facility fees, and surgeon’s fees. Southern Plastic Surgery provides patient financing options for those that qualify for any reconstructive or cosmetic surgery service we provide. Included within our financing options is CareCredit℠. CareCredit℠ is an 18-month plan that charges no interest as long as monthly minimum payments are successfully met, and payment is received in-full within the 18 month promotional period.

I want every patient who walks through my door to be comfortable, aware, and confident in their goals and my abilities as their cosmetic surgeon. To that end, I ensure that I will do my best to answer any questions you may have. For more information about cosmetic plastic surgery, please contact us at Southern Plastic Surgery, P.C.  to schedule a consultation. Breast Augmentation FAQs

If you’ve been debating whether or not to get your breasts enhanced, now’s the time to take your first step to achieving the look you really want. In order to ease any apprehensions you may have, I have broken down the top common questions patients typically ask before/after undergoing breast augmentation surgery:

Q: Who is a candidate for breast augmentation surgery?
Breast SizeA: From graduation gifts to a mother of three wanting to restore her pre-baby body, breast augmentation is reserved for women of all ages. The ideal candidate should however be at least 18 years old and physically and emotionally mature.  Breast augmentation is ideal for anyone wishing to increase the size and volume of their breasts.

Q: How do you determine what size breast implants are right for me?
A: There isn’t a “one size fits all” method to choosing breast implants and the sizing of your implants is completely customized for you. During your consultation, we will discuss your personal plastic surgery goals, medical history, and different breast enlargement techniques and implant options that showcase the most natural looking results. To determine which type of breast implant is right for you, whether it is silicone, saline or gummy bear implants, I will take full body measurements including height, weight, rib cage size, and current breast size. Additionally, you can physically try on different implant sizes to test which size and type of breast implant will help best achieve the look you desire.

Q: How long do implants last?
A: Breast implants have the possibility of lasting a lifetime. However, manufacturers do not consider them “lifetime devices.” It is important to attend follow-up appointments with your plastic surgeon and contact him or her if you have any questions or notice anything unusual.

Q: How long does it take to recover from breast augmentation surgery?
A: Following your surgery, your breasts will be wrapped in gauze and an elastic bandage or support bra in order to minimize swelling and support the breasts as they heal post-surgery. Recovery time differs for each patient and will be discussed during your consultation. Multiple factors such as the type of incision you receive, or the type of procedure you have, determine the length of time you will have to wait before returning to everyday activities. A majority of patients are typically able to return to work within a week and can engage in physical activity within four to six weeks. By adapting a healthy diet and exercise regimen, you can maintain and improve your breast enhancement results.
