FAQ’s About Common Cosmetic Procedures for Men

Once thought to be exclusively a woman’s game, recent years have shown us that plastic surgery is growing more popular with men all the time. With Father’s Day approaching, I thought it would be a great time to answer some of the more common questions I receive from male patients about popular cosmetic surgery procedures for men. Hopefully this will be instructional for any guys who are still on the fence about whether plastic surgery may be right for them.

FAQ’s About Common Cosmetic Procedures for MenWhat are the most common plastic surgery procedures for men?

According to stats collected by the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS) for 2016, liposuction is consistently the most popular cosmetic procedure for both men and women, due to its reputation for versatility and effectiveness. After that, the most commonly-performed cosmetic surgeries for men are (in order of their popularity) male breast reduction, eyelid surgery, neck lifts, and facelifts.

How much scarring will there be after male breast reduction surgery?

The scars left from male breast reduction to treat gynecomastia vary depending on a number of factors including the amount of fat and breast tissue that is removed during the procedure, as well as the elasticity of the patient’s skin. During male breast reduction, I try to make the smallest-possible incisions in hard to see areas on and around the chest to reduce the visibility of scars. In my experience, even patients who have larger breasts and more scarring following their male breast reduction are still very satisfied with their results.

Which facial procedures would you recommend for men trying to restore a more youthful appearance?

As I mentioned above, facelifts are very popular with men trying to turn the clock back and rejuvenate their face, but they are far from the only option. Eyelid surgery and rhinoplasty procedures are very in-demand with men at the moment, as are fat transfer injections. Fat transfer injections purify and re-inject a patient’s fat that is removed during liposuction to add lost volume to other areas including the face. Men may also want to consider a mini facelift of neck lift.

Are there any nonsurgical treatments for men that you would recommend for men trying to improve their appearance?

SculpSure® nonsurgical fat reduction can be perfect for guys trying to shed stubborn fat from areas all over the body. SculpSure® is FDA-approved to treat stubborn fat that diet and exercise alone may not be able to get rid of.

Men have more options than ever to achieve natural-looking aesthetic upgrades. Whether you are trying to shed stubborn excess fat, improve your physique, or undo some of the natural effects of aging, I believe plastic surgery can open up a world of possibilities for men trying to look and feel their best. Liposuction vs. Tummy Tuck: Which is Right for Me?

One of the more common questions I receive from patients during plastic surgery consultations is to clarify the differences between certain procedures that may seem similar to the uninitiated. Specifically body contouring procedures like a tummy tuck and liposuction. Though these procedures are both highly in-demand for creating a flatter abdominal area, they are actually very different. A tummy tuck, or abdominoplasty, involves removing loose or excess skin from the lower abdomen and tightening the abdominal muscles whereas a liposuction procedure actually removes troublesome deposits of fat.

A tummy tuck can often make sense for patients trying to get rid of excess skin around the abdomen, treat unsightly stretch marks, as well as a loose abdominal pooch that is caused by muscle separation that occurs during pregnancy or excessive weight gain. Results from a successful tummy tuck will produce a flatter stomach, smoother skin, leaner abs and even a more contoured waistline when performed with my Scarpa Fascia technique.

Undergoing liposuction makes sense for those patients who are interested in contouring by removing stubborn fat from specific areas of the body that can be tough to treat just through diet and exercise. Typically, these patients are close to a comfortable body weight. Liposuction may not be right for patients who are considerably overweight or obese and looking to drop significant weight, since removing large amounts of fat in a single day with liposuction it not recommended.

Determining whether a tummy tuck or a liposuction procedure makes the most sense for a specific patient may depend on the quality of a patient’s skin. In the following video, I explain how the laxity and condition of a patient’s skin can be the determining factor when choosing a cosmetic procedure:

When it comes to cosmetic surgery procedures, what is right for a certain patient may not be right for another. That is why it’s so important to schedule a consultation with a board-certified cosmetic surgeon (like myself) to discuss your surgical options and your aesthetic goals in-depth before making any hasty decisions. How Nonsurgical Treatments Can Help Keep You Looking Young

No one wants to look old. Thankfully, patients today have more options than ever to help fight off common signs of aging. In addition to our wide variety of cosmetic surgery procedures, Southern Plastic Surgery offers a number of nonsurgical cosmetic treatments that can provide wondrous anti-aging results. I have detailed a few of our most popular nonsurgical treatments below for patients who may be interested in slowing down the aging process without the need for surgery.

Perhaps there is no more obvious sign of age than wrinkles around the face and forehead. That’s why I am happy to recommend Botox® Cosmetic injections to patients trying to regain smooth, youthful skin on and around their face. In addition to treating existing wrinkles and lines, a recent study published by dermatologists in JAMA Facial Plastic Surgery asserts that Botox® can actually prevent wrinkles by increasing skin elasticity while it is active. As one of the only physicians in the Atlanta area to have achieved “Platinum Level Status” as a Botox® Cosmetic injector, I believe this treatment can offer patients excellent anti-aging results.

A double chin is another of the telltale signs of aging. Stubborn fat beneath the chin can be nearly impossible to eliminate with diet and exercise alone. Approved by the FDA, Kybella® fat reduction is a nonsurgical option for removing submental fat that accumulates below the chin.

Lastly, I commonly get requests from patients who are seeking to lose a bit of excess fat in order to restore their younger, trimmer physique. While there are certainly a number of body contouring surgeries like liposuction that can help, nonsurgical fat reduction has come a long way in recent years. SculpSure® nonsurgical fat reduction can provide astonishing contouring results for a number of areas on the body including the love handles, thighs, & abdomen. And unlike liposuction, SculpSure® treatments are fast (typically 25 minutes to complete) and require no downtime for recovery.

I still recommend a surgical procedure for many patients seeking more dramatic body contouring results, depending on their specific aesthetic needs and expectations, but it’s nice for patients to have the nonsurgical option if they believe that is the right course of action for them.
