What’s New at Southern Plastic Surgery?

As we transition into fall, the idea of change can come to the forefront of our minds as the kids are back in school, we gear up for seasonal sports and prepare for upcoming holidays.  When we grow older, our bodies start to respond more to the effects of gravity and accumulated damage that we acquire from long days spent in the sun.  These effects tend to also make ourselves look more aged than we really are.  In recent years, nonsurgical skincare treatments have shown that you can achieve younger-looking results and prolong the need for extensive surgical procedures.  This month, we’re featuring two of our newest nonsurgical and surgical procedure additions: Kybella™ nonsurgical fat reduction for the double chin and the Grammy Makeover.

Kybella™

A hot topic in the newest nonsurgical fat reduction conversation is the brand new, FDA-approved facial rejuvenation treatment – Kybella™.  Specifically promoted to treat the fat that accumulates below the chin, or a double chin as you may know it as, Kybella™ is made of a naturally-occurring substance already in our bodies, called deoxycholic acid (this molecule helps the body breakdown and absorb dietary fat).   During a short, 15-20 minute series of injections into the fat below your chin, Kybella™ nonsurgical fat reduction starts to work by destroying the fat cells so they can no longer accumulate fat.  So after treatment, you’ll see improved, younger-looking contours and a slimmer profile.

Grammy Makeover

Often patients question how they can fit facial plastic surgery procedures into their schedules, and their budgets.  While some procedures don’t require as much downtime as you would think (we’re talking days and weeks, not months), combination procedures may be something you’ve never even considered.  Our newest procedure, the Grammy makeover is similar to the Mommy makeover, only this time it includes even more anti-aging options by adding facial procedures to this a-la-carte procedure.  Where a Mommy makeover focuses on the breast and body, the Grammy makeover combines face, breast and body contouring procedures in one comprehensive, custom-tailored surgical plan for our more mature patients.

When you combine procedures at the same time, you’re reducing the number of times you’re required to be in the hospital (one time versus going several times over a longer period of time) and less overall downtime (again, one recovery period verses recovery after recovery time).  The savings come into play because you’re not paying the required surgical and hospital fees for each and every procedure.  Instead, when you have a combination procedure like a Mommy or Grammy makeover, you only pay those fees once.  This month, we are extending our Beauty in All Shades offer where you can receive 10% OFF hospital facility fees and anesthesia for any surgery completed by September 30th, 2015!  This special only applies to non-insurance cases and is available as we have openings.

If you’re interested in learning more about our newest cosmetic plastic surgery procedures, don’t hesitate to contact Southern Plastic Surgery, P.C. today to set up your complimentary consultation.  We’ll be running more specials in the near future, so be sure to follow me, Dr. David Whiteman, on Facebook, Twitter and Google+ so you don’t miss out!atlanta plastic surgeon discounts

Kybella™ Fat Reduction for the Double Chin

kybella chin reduction atlanta duluth gaOh, the dreaded “double chin.”  How does it seemingly appear out of nowhere?  Why won’t it go away?  Can it go away with diet and exercise?  If you’ve ever asked yourself any of these questions, then listen up!  There are several factors that can contribute to a man or woman’s double chin; age, genetics and weight gain are all possible causes.  No matter how diligent you are in eating right and exercising, it just may not be able to do the trick.  That’s where the new, FDA-approved nonsurgical treatment Kybella™ fat reduction for the chin comes into play!

According to a 2014 American Society of Dermatologic Surgery (ASDS), 68% of people polled shared being bothered by their double chin (also referred to as submental fullness).  As a double board certified plastic surgeon, I am always researching the latest techniques and products influencing the plastic surgery field.  Typically, body contouring procedures were the only way to address fat stored below the chin, but Kybella™ has proven to be the nonsurgical alternative.  Let’s go over some of the top frequently asked questions we’ve received regarding Kybella™ and its benefits:

Q: Am I a good candidate for Kybella™ fat reduction treatments?
A: Patients who are unhappy by the appearance of their double chin, feel their appearance looks aged or heavier than it actually is or may not yet be ready for surgical contouring procedures, like liposuction, are good candidates for Kybella™ treatments.

Q: Does Kybella™ fat reduction work on other parts of the body?
A: Kybella™ is only FDA approved for use on the fat below the chin.  Sorry, but it’s not recommended as safe for use on any other parts of the body.

Q: How do Kybella™ fat reduction treatments work?
A: Think of Kybella™ as a combination of body contouring and cosmetic injectable treatments.  The main ingredient used is a naturally-occurring substance already in our bodies, called deoxycholic acid.  This molecule helps the body breakdown and absorb dietary fat; when Kybella™ treatment is administered (during a 15-20 minute series of injections into the fat below your chin), it destroys the fat cells so they can no longer accumulate fat.  After treatment, Kybella™ patients see improved, younger-looking contours and a slimmer chin profile.

Q: Are there any risks and how long will my results last?
A: Downtime is fairly minimal after your first treatment.  Common side effects include swelling, bruising, numbness, stiffness or redness.  An ice/cold pack and over-the-counter medicine is all that is really recommended to help relieve any discomfort after treatment.  As far as results, it will depend on the person and how much fat we need to get rid of.  Generally we recommend 2-4 treatments but some patients may need up to six for the best results.  As long as you’re diligent with doing your part to maintain your weight, the fat cells should remain permanently gone!

Instead of wishing your double chin away, why not treat it the nonsurgical way with Kybella™ fat reduction?  If you’d like to learn more about Kybella™ or schedule your Kybella™ treatment, contact Southern Plastic Surgery today.  Stay connected with SPS by following me, Dr. David Whiteman, on Facebook, Twitter and Google+.

Increased Popularity of Ethnic Rhinoplasty in Atlanta Emphasizes Need for Experienced Surgeons

Dr. David Whiteman of Southern Plastic Surgery, P.C. uses his twenty years of experience and specialized techniques to produce natural- looking ethnic rhinoplasty results in Atlanta, GA.

ATLANTA, GA, December 12, 2012 – Serving the diverse Atlanta community since 1993, double board certified cosmetic and reconstructive plastic surgeon Dr. David Whiteman has specialized in ethnic rhinoplasty for 20 years. Rhinoplasty is a more prevalent procedure for ethnic patients and can be among the most challenging of all facial procedures because intricate nasal structures require attention to detail to yield natural-looking results. Dr. Whiteman emphasizes the importance of maintaining cultural identity with cosmetic procedures and selecting a surgeon knowledgeable of and experienced with ethnic diversity in plastic surgery.

Featured on Bravo’s The Real Housewives of Atlanta during NeNe Leakes’ plastic surgery journey, Dr. David Whiteman acknowledges the structural differences in African American (Black) rhinoplasty as well as other groups such as Hispanic (Latino) rhinoplasty and Asian rhinoplasty. Dr. Whiteman cites the risk of scarring as a prominent concern amongst ethnic patients because they tend to have more fibrous tissue than Caucasian patients. Another anatomical concern is cartilage because ethnic patients typically have weaker cartilage and shorter bones.

To produce the most natural-looking results, Dr. Whiteman employs an implantless technique that harvests the patient’s own tissues to augment the nose. Implants can place a patient at higher risk for infection or rejection of the foreign material. Dr. Whiteman’s technique significantly reduces the risk of post-operative complications, as he notes, “ethnic patients, particularly of Asian and Hispanic backgrounds, usually require additional cartilage and tissue to enlarge the nasal bridge or tip. By using materials from their own bodies, the risk of complications is minimized.”

The American Society of Plastic Surgeons’ 2011 Plastic Surgery Procedural Statistics show that ethnic plastic surgery is on the rise, with ethnic patients making up approximately 21% of all cosmetic procedures. Nose reshaping (rhinoplasty) ranked among the top three procedures for Asian-American and Latino groups. Statistics also show the number of African-American rhinoplasty procedures is up 10% in 2011 from 2010.

Dr. Whiteman urges cosmetic surgery patients to always ask questions regarding the procedure and the surgeon’s experience during their consultation, as well as review rhinoplasty before and after photos. For ethnic patients, it is important to find a plastic surgeon thoroughly skilled and experienced working with a diverse patientbase.
