Ask Dr. Whiteman: Cosmetic Procedures for the Face this Winter

With so much attention paid to body contouring procedures, it’s common for some people to consider facial plastic surgery an afterthought. But when trying to achieve a new, improved appearance, what better place is there to start than the face? In the hands of an experienced, board-certified plastic surgeon, cosmetic surgery for the face can offer patients outstanding, life-changing results. With this in mind, I have answered some common questions about cosmetic procedures for the face to help keep patients informed this holiday season.

best-atlanta-plastic-surgeonDear Dr. Whiteman,

The appearance of my eyes makes me look way older than I am. Would I be better off undergoing eyelid surgery or a browlift?

Sincerely,
“P”

Dear “P”,

It depends. Both eyelid surgery (also known as blepharoplasty) and a browlift can help provide a more refreshed, younger looking appearance to the areas around the eyes. During eyelid surgery, excess skin on the upper eyelid and small pockets of fat on the lower lids can be removed. A browlift focuses on the placement of the brow by treating frown lines that can make the face appear tired, sad, or angry. In some cases, the procedures can be combined to provide even more comprehensive results for certain patients. However, in order to understand all your options and determine which treatment plan is the right choice for you, it’s important to visit with an experienced board-certified plastic surgeon for a consultation.

Dear Dr. Whiteman,

If I undergo a facelift how long will I need to stay in the hospital after my surgery?

Sincerely,
“J”

Dear “J”,

In most cases, a facelift is an outpatient procedure. This means that unless the patient prefers to do so, they will not be required to stay in the hospital overnight. Pain following facelifts is typically minimal and patients can recover in the comfort of their own home. Although some swelling and bruising will likely occur after your procedure, these effects are temporary. And most people feel quite well after just a couple days. Patients can typically return to work after one or two weeks of recovery, however it can take up to six weeks (or longer) to see the final results of your procedure.

Dear Dr. Whiteman,

I have been self-conscious about a bump on my nose for years and feel I’m finally ready to do something about it. How bad is scarring after a rhinoplasty procedure?

Sincerely,
“C”

Dear “C”,

Scarring following a rhinoplasty is generally very minor. Sometimes the procedure results in a small, barely visible scar at the base of the nose, but this will often fade over time. However, if you are that concerned about it, and you are a good candidate, I also perform a nonsurgical rhinoplasty procedure (sometimes known as a “liquid nose job”) using injectable dermal fillers. Although nonsurgical rhinoplasty cannot alter the shape or size of the nose like a surgical rhinoplasty can, it can help to smooth out bumps and other imperfections.

FAQ’s About Common Cosmetic Procedures for Men

Once thought to be exclusively a woman’s game, recent years have shown us that plastic surgery is growing more popular with men all the time. With Father’s Day approaching, I thought it would be a great time to answer some of the more common questions I receive from male patients about popular cosmetic surgery procedures for men. Hopefully this will be instructional for any guys who are still on the fence about whether plastic surgery may be right for them.

FAQ’s About Common Cosmetic Procedures for MenWhat are the most common plastic surgery procedures for men?

According to stats collected by the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS) for 2016, liposuction is consistently the most popular cosmetic procedure for both men and women, due to its reputation for versatility and effectiveness. After that, the most commonly-performed cosmetic surgeries for men are (in order of their popularity) male breast reduction, eyelid surgery, neck lifts, and facelifts.

How much scarring will there be after male breast reduction surgery?

The scars left from male breast reduction to treat gynecomastia vary depending on a number of factors including the amount of fat and breast tissue that is removed during the procedure, as well as the elasticity of the patient’s skin. During male breast reduction, I try to make the smallest-possible incisions in hard to see areas on and around the chest to reduce the visibility of scars. In my experience, even patients who have larger breasts and more scarring following their male breast reduction are still very satisfied with their results.

Which facial procedures would you recommend for men trying to restore a more youthful appearance?

As I mentioned above, facelifts are very popular with men trying to turn the clock back and rejuvenate their face, but they are far from the only option. Eyelid surgery and rhinoplasty procedures are very in-demand with men at the moment, as are fat transfer injections. Fat transfer injections purify and re-inject a patient’s fat that is removed during liposuction to add lost volume to other areas including the face. Men may also want to consider a mini facelift of neck lift.

Are there any nonsurgical treatments for men that you would recommend for men trying to improve their appearance?

SculpSure® nonsurgical fat reduction can be perfect for guys trying to shed stubborn fat from areas all over the body. SculpSure® is FDA-approved to treat stubborn fat that diet and exercise alone may not be able to get rid of.

Men have more options than ever to achieve natural-looking aesthetic upgrades. Whether you are trying to shed stubborn excess fat, improve your physique, or undo some of the natural effects of aging, I believe plastic surgery can open up a world of possibilities for men trying to look and feel their best. Is Eyelid Surgery Right For Me?

As the saying goes, the eyes are the windows to the soul. They are also typically the first thing people notice when they look at someone’s face. That’s why to minimize the effects of aging and keep ourselves looking young, it all begins with taking care of the eyes. As we age, it’s only natural for the skin around our eyes and eyelids to begin to sag, creating bags and dark circles under the eyes and making the eyes look tired.

For patients interested in rejuvenating the areas around their eyes, I offer eyelid surgery. Otherwise known as a blepharoplasty procedure, eyelid surgery is able to refresh a patient’s face by removing excess skin and pockets of fat from the eyelids. Eyelid surgery can be performed on both the upper and lower eyelids, depending on the patient’s specific needs.

When performed by a board-certified plastic surgeon, eyelid surgery can provide benefits for patients seeking relief from a wide variety of facial imperfections. Eyelid surgery can treat bags that appear under the eyes or puffiness on the upper eyelids. It can also help patients that experience obscured vision that results from excess skin and fat on the eyelids.

If you are in good mental and physical health and have realistic expectations for your procedure, eyelid surgery can work wonders to create a more youthful appearance for your face. Certain medical conditions like glaucoma and dry eye may prevent certain patients from undergoing this procedure. To confirm that you are a candidate for eyelid surgery, I recommend coming in for a complimentary plastic surgery consultation. During your consultation, we will discuss your medical history as well as what you hope to achieve with your surgery to determine if an eyelid surgery is the right choice for you.
