The Most Common Reasons to Consider a Neck Lift

When people think of cosmetic surgery, the neck is not typically what they think of. With so much attention paid to the face, breasts and stomach, it’s easy for your neck to get lost in the shuffle.  Your neck is commonly where the signs of aging begin to show. Patients with excess, hanging skin or fat along their chin, jawline and neck can benefit from neck lift surgery.

The Most Common Reasons to Consider a Neck LiftDuring a neck lift procedure, I use liposuction to remove excess fat from underneath the neck (double chin) and the jawline. Then, the sagging skin is removed and the underlying muscles are tightened to produce a tighter, more pleasing appearance. A neck lifts serves as a perfect complement to a full or mini facelift procedure to provide more comprehensive rejuvenation. Neck lifts at SPS are performed under local anesthetic.

Undergoing a neck lift procedure can alleviate the following aesthetic afflictions:

Turkey wattle:

The sagging skin found underneath your chin is commonly known as a turkey wattle, or turkey neck. The turkey wattle can be caused by weakened or loose muscles in the neck or loose neck skin that results from weight loss and/or aging.

Excess fat:

The accrual of excess fat around the face and neck can be the result of excess weight, obesity, aging or water retention. Other medical conditions like Cushing’s syndrome or thyroid issues can also lead to excess neck fat.

Excess skin:

Sagging skin under the chin is one of the tell-tale signs of aging. Exercising face and neck muscles generally cannot provide results; only a neck or face lift can properly dispel the excess skin from around your neck and chin.

A standard neck lift is not your only option at Southern Plastic Surgery (SPS). I also offer less invasive neck lift techniques to tighten the skin and muscles of the chin and neck. My technique for this procedure offer excellent, natural-looking results and a relatively short downtime for patients with more mild signs of aging of the lower face and neck.
