Turn Back the Clock with a Grammy Makeover

Maintaining a youthful appearance can be challenging, especially for women of a certain age. While diet, exercise and anti-aging skin care treatments can be effective in helping women look younger, more retirement-aged women than ever are turning to cosmetic surgical procedures to help reverse the visible signs of aging like deep wrinkles and sagging skin. Cosmetic surgery for Americans age 65 or higher has increased by almost 80% over the last decade according to the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery. If you’re considering cosmetic surgery to help turn back the clock, might I recommend my unique Grammy Makeover?

Turn Back the Clock with a Grammy MakeoverInitially inspired by a conversation I had with a patient, my unique Grammy Makeover puts your cosmetic procedure options in your hands. The Grammy Makeover focuses on combining face, breast and body procedures, custom-tailored into one comprehensive surgical plan, to battle the comprehensive effects of aging on the face and body. Building upon the Mommy Makeover, the Grammy Makeover procedure includes a-la-carte options for specific areas of improvement to create a compounding effect and long-lasting results.

A Mommy Makeover utilizes a tummy tuck (using my special Scarpa fascia technique), liposuction and a cosmetic breast surgery like breast augmentation, breast reduction or breast lift, in an effort to tighten the abdominal muscles, reduce fat and help remedy the effects of breast feeding. The Grammy Makeover takes this procedure to the next level by adding any of a series of additional treatments and procedures including:

Radiesse® Hand Rejuvenation

FDA-approved, nonsurgical injections temporarily plump up skeletal thin skin on the back of the hand.

Brow Lift

A surgical procedure designed to smooth the skin above the eyes & on the forehead by repositioning sagging eyebrows and raising upper lids.

Eyelid Surgery (Blepharoplasty)

A surgical procedure that removes excess fat, tissue, and skin around the eyes to create a more rested appearance.

Facelift Surgery (Rhytidectomy) or Mini Facelift

A surgical procedure that tightens wrinkled and loose facial skin and/or repositions facial tissue to create a tighter, more youthful appearance. I offer both facelift and mini facelift procedures.

Neck Lift

A surgical procedure that removes excess fat from the double chin, jowls and neck to create a more healthy appearance. Commonly performed in tandem with a facelift.

Arm Lift (Brachioplasty)

A surgical procedure that removes loose skin that may accumulate after weight fluctuation and aging and fat from the arms to create a more toned appearance.

What makes the Grammy Makeover special is that it’s 100% customizable. Since no two patients are truly identical, no two Grammy Makeovers are either. Due to its specific, customizable nature, a Grammy Makeover requires a thorough consultation. What’s the Difference between a Mommy Makeover & Grammy Makeover?

Having options is great because in my opinion, it reduces the sense of restrictedness when having to pick among several things that we may truly want. Once women reach the point in their life when they’re finished with pregnancy/childbirth, or after years of waiting to finally decide to reclaim their youthful body from top to bottom, this is the ideal time to consider more comprehensive procedures. Two of the top most popular procedures among the 30 and over crowd (but keep in mind it’s not exclusive to this group by any means) has become the Mommy Makeover and Grammy Makeover procedures. Most notably known for combining multiple procedures into one procedure, these two offer great benefits for helping patients attain a younger-looking appearance, but what’s the difference between a Mommy Makeover and Grammy Makeover?

What’s the Difference between a Mommy Makeover & Grammy MakeoverMommy Makeover

Mommy Makeover got its name because it focuses on common areas of the body that physically change from the effects of pregnancy, childbirth, and weight gain/loss. This procedure combines breast and body contouring procedures and patients can choose from:

  • Breast Augmentation – to increase the overall size of the breasts using breast implants
  • Breast Lift – to reduce excess skin and fat from drooping breasts and raising them to a higher, more proportionate, position on the chest (can also be combined with a breast augmentation)
  • Liposuction – to permanently remove accumulated fat cells and refine the shape of the midsection, thighs, chin, arms, and buttocks
  • Tummy Tuck – to remove excess skin and fat of the abdominal region, and also re-tighten muscles that have weakened or separated during pregnancy

Grammy Makeover

With maturity comes more noticeably greater effects of natural aging and gravity that contribute to deeper wrinkles, perpetually tired-looking appearances, under-eye bags, sagging skin, and more. For this reason, a Grammy Makeover extends beyond the four procedures mentioned above for the Mommy Makeover – this time, combining nonsurgical and surgical options for the face, breasts, and body. In addition to breast augmentation/lift, liposuction and tummy tucks, a Grammy Makeover can include:

  • Hand Rejuvenation w/ Radiesse® – temporarily plumps up skeletal thin skin on the back of the hand instantly with the cosmetic injectable Radiesse® (results can generally last 1-2 years)
  • Browlift – smoothes the skin above/around the eyes & on the forehead by repositioning sagging eyebrows and raising upper lids
  • Blepharoplasty (Eyelid Surgery) – removes excess fat, tissue, and skin around the eyes to give a more rested appearance
  • Facelift – tightens sagging skin and smoothes wrinkles on the face (mainly around the cheeks, neck, and jowls) and/or repositions facial tissue
  • Neck Lift – removes excess fat from the chin and neck, eliminates hanging, and tightens what’s remaining for a smoother finish
  • Arm Lift – removes extra skin and fat (targeting the dreaded bat wings) before tightening remaining skin for a toned appearance
  • Fat Transfer – uses liposuction to remove fat from a donor site (typically the abdomen, thighs, or buttocks) that is purified and re-injected into areas of the body that have lost volume, such as the face and buttocks

There are options for how you’d like your groceries bagged, which gas station you’ll fuel up at, what hair color you’d like to choose, and so much more – so why shouldn’t the same inclusion apply to plastic surgery? Not every cosmetic plastic surgery procedure allows the same type of customizing freedom like a Mommy Makeover or Grammy Makeover, but the appeal of being able to hand select the procedures that will go into your final plastic surgery results are something many patients really appreciate knowing they have the ability to do. Ask Dr. Whiteman: Am I Too Old for a Mommy Makeover?

In the words of Pablo Picasso, “youth has no age.” At the very core, age is a numerical representation of how many years we’ve lived on this Earth. What’s great about aging is that we get to experience many things in a lifetime and whether good or bad, we still have the capability to embody a youthful spirit even as we tack on years. Plastic surgery is an art, one that helps sculpt patients into a form that can positively impact their life and give them a real sense of looking as young as they feel. I’ve been a double-board certified plastic surgeon for nearly 22 years now and I still get the question, “am I too old for a mommy makeover procedure” more times than you may believe.

Whether you’re 30, 40, 50 or 60, if you truly believe that age is just a number, then the answer to this question is easy – no, you’re not too old for a mommy makeover. As a society we tend to get stuck on the nomenclature of just about everything and can lose sight of the real goal that we’re trying to achieve. The current procedure names that we know today are just identifiers we use to describe the type of plastic surgery procedure we’re performing.  Tummy tucks cover the abdomen, breast enhancement works with breasts, and facial rejuvenation to refresh your look.

Since physical changes to the abdomen and breasts commonly arise after women experience childbirth, mommy makeover is the name used to describe a combination breast and body contouring procedure to correct patients’ concerns for multiple areas at once. This also means that it’s not a procedure exclusively for mothers; it’s for all women. It’s for the 55-year-old single woman who lost significant weight and wants to get rid of excess skin and fat around the stomach and on her breasts. It’s for the 36-year-old mother of two who is finished having kids and wants her pooch, caused by weakened abdominal muscles, gone and larger breasts to fill out a bikini. It’s for the 60-year-old grandmother who has aged gracefully in the face but would like the rest of her body to exhibit the same youthfulness (but if she wanted to combine a face procedure she would be a better Grammy makeover candidate).

As your surgeon I can examine if you’re in good mental and physical health to undergo a mommy makeover. Age is factored into the equation to increase your safety as the patient and to decrease any unforeseen risks that arise with any cosmetic or reconstructive procedure. If those two check out then the only person who can answer the “am I too old?” question is you. Plastic surgery is about improving upon what you were already gifted with because it will make you feel better in the clothes you wear, appreciate the reflection in the mirror more, or simply increase your overall happiness. Having the mommy makeover results of your dreams could be just the gift you needed for yourself and no age or misconception of what’s appropriate or not according to society’s standards should get in the way.

Each month we feature a cosmetic procedure by offering special savings to our Atlanta-area patients. Two popular procedures included in the mommy makeover are featured for December and we encourage you to check out our plastic surgery specials page if you’re interested in exploring breast enhancement and body contouring procedures.
