The holidays are for spending time with family, shopping for gifts, attending holiday parties, and indulging in your favorite foods.  As most people find this time of year to be the busiest, we often struggle to pay a visit to the gym. It’s important to not let your jam-packed schedule hinder you from reaching your weight loss goals. Even if you’re considering cosmetic surgery procedures such as liposuction, tummy tuck, or mommy makeover, it is still important to maintain a healthy lifestyle in order to produce aesthetically-pleasing cosmetic surgery results. Here are some tips for staying fit and motivated this holiday season:

  • Schedule a block of time for your workouts:Take a look at your calendar and schedule in time for your workout. This may mean missing something else on your agenda, but it will be worth it in the long run. Set reminders on your phone so you won’t forget, even on your busiest days.
  • Get creative with your exercises: Whether you’re spending the holidays traveling or if you’re stuck inside because you’ve been snowed in, it’s difficult to stick to your usual exercise routine. Perhaps your flight gets delayed; find a space and stretch, do pushups, sit ups, or walk the terminal. As another alternative, try interval jumping jacks or running in place in your living room. You can also get plenty of cardio while shopping at the mall!
  • Sweat out the stress: It is known that stress is one of the leading causes of weight gain and noticeable signs of aging. Yoga is an excellent and sufficient way to decrease seasonal stress while improving strength, flexibility, and balance. As soon as you wake up in the morning, spend about half an hour doing a few relaxation and breathing exercises in order to diminish any tension in your body.
  • Make the most of your “off” day: Everyone has days that they slip up on their workout routine. Instead of vegging out in front of the television, use the time slot to enjoy some quiet time by reading a book, listen to music, or treat yourself to a day at the spa. Remember not to get down on yourself for skipping, instead, schedule a day off from your workout plan to rest, just be sure to practice self-control and start again the next day.
  • Limit holiday treats:Holiday foods are packed with calories. It is acceptable to enjoy these foods in moderation, but it’s important to not overindulge. People often make the mistake of not eating all day so that they can let loose at a holiday party. Instead, eat a healthy snack before going out to avoid eating extra calories to compensate for your hunger. Exercising in the morning will also help you provide some calorie wiggle room at the party.
  • Set goals: Get a head start on your New Year’s resolutions and set some goals. Setting goals is important and beneficial, but they need to be realistic. There’s no need to set yourself up for disappointment.

Staying fit over the holidays is all about self-control and moderation. Spring into Health and Wellness

Spring into health and wellnessOverall health and wellness plays a major part in the results that can be achieved with plastic surgery.  Plastic surgeons can enhance a patient’s appearance, but it’s up to the patient to maintain results.  In addition to performing plastic surgery procedures like liposuction and tummy tucks, plastic surgeons should educate patients on health and wellness.  In fact, Southern Plastic Surgery has partnered with Daryl Madison, ACE certified personal trainer and creator of the Chair-A-Cise workout program, to help patients with diet and exercise programs.  It’s important to keep in mind that maintaining a healthy lifestyle will not only benefit you, it will also teach your children healthy habits for their future.

However, encouraging healthy habits can be tough for parents because kids don’t seem to like anything that’s healthy (i.e.- health foods and exercise), which is why we suggest making it fun for them.  Making healthy meals exciting for your children to eat can also help you stick with the program too.  Choose foods with a variety of colors—not only will it encourage your children to eat, but the most nutritious foods are typically the most colorful (take fruits and veggies for example).

Just like planning a healthy meal, it’s also important to make exercise fun for your children.  In fact, it is best not to even refer to it as “exercise” in front of the kids.  Instead, plan “fun, outdoor activities”. Spring is the perfect time to get the family outdoors and moving.  The temperature is neither too hot nor too cold, and the sun sets later.  Here’s a list of ideas for spring family fun:

  • Incorporate a family walk into your dinner routine. (Some say to go before dinner to help curb your appetite, while others say a walk after dinner will help digestion. Let your family decide what works best for your routine.)
  • Visit the park.
  • Play a sport that your family enjoys. Soccer, basketball, kickball, baseball, or a game of catchhave great cardiovascular benefits.
  • Go for a hike and take a picnic lunch. (Be sure to prepare a healthy lunch and take lots of water!)
  • Ride bikes.
  • Jump rope.
  • Fly a kite on a breezy, spring day.
  • Plant a vegetable garden together.  (This gets your family off the couch and provides healthier food choices for later.)

There are so many ways to get your family active, and most of the activities mentioned above are relatively cheap (if not free). These activities don’t just help you get the family active, they will also help your family form a stronger bond.

Chicken Tortilla Soup

Things You Need:

  • 1 Cup onion, chopped
  • 2 Cloves garlic, chopped
  • 3 green onions, chopped
  • 2(12oz) cans diced tomatoes
  • 4 cups low fat chicken broth
  • 1/3 cups salsa
  • ½ red pepper, chopped
  • ½ green pepper, chopped
  • 3-4 celery stalks, chopped
  • 1/3 cup fresh cilantro
  • ½ tsp cumin
  • ½tsp chili powder
  • fat free sour cream
  • flour(to thicken)

Instructions:

Simmer onions, garlic, & green onions in pan until tender. Combine all ingredients in pot & simmer until all veggies are tender.

Makes 9 servings
