Stay in Shape This Holiday Season

Christmas Workout

The holidays are for spending time with family, shopping for gifts, attending holiday parties, and indulging in your favorite foods.  As most people find this time of year to be the busiest, we often struggle to pay a visit to the gym. It’s important to not let your jam-packed schedule hinder you from reaching your weight loss goals. Even if you’re considering cosmetic surgery procedures such as liposuction, tummy tuck, or mommy makeover, it is still important to maintain a healthy lifestyle in order to produce aesthetically-pleasing cosmetic surgery results. Here are some tips for staying fit and motivated this holiday season:

  • Schedule a block of time for your workouts:Take a look at your calendar and schedule in time for your workout. This may mean missing something else on your agenda, but it will be worth it in the long run. Set reminders on your phone so you won’t forget, even on your busiest days.
  • Get creative with your exercises: Whether you’re spending the holidays traveling or if you’re stuck inside because you’ve been snowed in, it’s difficult to stick to your usual exercise routine. Perhaps your flight gets delayed; find a space and stretch, do pushups, sit ups, or walk the terminal. As another alternative, try interval jumping jacks or running in place in your living room. You can also get plenty of cardio while shopping at the mall!
  • Sweat out the stress: It is known that stress is one of the leading causes of weight gain and noticeable signs of aging. Yoga is an excellent and sufficient way to decrease seasonal stress while improving strength, flexibility, and balance. As soon as you wake up in the morning, spend about half an hour doing a few relaxation and breathing exercises in order to diminish any tension in your body.
  • Make the most of your “off” day: Everyone has days that they slip up on their workout routine. Instead of vegging out in front of the television, use the time slot to enjoy some quiet time by reading a book, listen to music, or treat yourself to a day at the spa. Remember not to get down on yourself for skipping, instead, schedule a day off from your workout plan to rest, just be sure to practice self-control and start again the next day.
  • Limit holiday treats:Holiday foods are packed with calories. It is acceptable to enjoy these foods in moderation, but it’s important to not overindulge. People often make the mistake of not eating all day so that they can let loose at a holiday party. Instead, eat a healthy snack before going out to avoid eating extra calories to compensate for your hunger. Exercising in the morning will also help you provide some calorie wiggle room at the party.
  • Set goals: Get a head start on your New Year’s resolutions and set some goals. Setting goals is important and beneficial, but they need to be realistic. There’s no need to set yourself up for disappointment.

Staying fit over the holidays is all about self-control and moderation. I believe that exercise is an important part of overall health and wellness, and plastic surgery should not replace any exercise plan. Buttock Augmentation: Unraveling the Media’s Vast Obsession

In today’s society, there is much emphasis placed on one’s physical appearance. Social media has made an influential impact on the way we look and it always circles back to “we all want what we can’t have.” Different plastic surgery trends arise every day—one day women are opting for larger breasts and bigger derrières the next. According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), in 2013, there were 9,993 buttock augmentation procedures performed with a 16% increase since 2012.

butt augmentation atlanta gaThis increasing popularity in buttock enhancement stems from a variety of influences; mainly from popular Hollywood starlets with a large presence on social media and television such as Jennifer Lopez, Nicki Minaj, Iggy Azalea, or the Kardashian sisters. This infatuation with an individual’s backside is not only seen in the tabloids, but now it’s commonly heard in lyrics and seen in music videos as well. Nowadays, most female patients desire similar, more contoured figures not just in the waist and hips but also the buttocks. In order to achieve this look, I perform buttock augmentation, also known as Brazilian butt lift, for patients wishing to enhance the size and curve of their buttocks.

Brazilian butt lift is commonly performed through a fat transfer process to enhance the shape of the buttocks. The injections consist of your own fat from other areas obtained through liposuction around the buttocks, thighs, hips, or abdomen.  The donated fat is then purified and re-injected into predetermined areas on your buttocks.  By using your own fat, it allows me to sculpt the injected fat into a more naturally prominent posterior.  I prefer using the fat transfer technique for butt augmentation as it significantly decreases the risk of complication that can be associated with the introduction of a foreign object into the body, such as butt implants.

During your consultation, I will assess the amount of donated fat needed, the desired sites where the injections will go, as well as the number and depth of the injections when determining your desired cosmetic goals.  Despite media influences, it is my responsibility as your double board-certified plastic surgeon to understand and achieve your wants and needs. I will take the time to listen to your concerns, and while each patient is different and unique, it is my obligation to provide you the most aesthetically-pleasing results.

Plastic Surgery Myths & Facts

There are often a variety of misconceptions associated with plastic surgery that are simply untrue. These skewed perceptions are often derived from photos of celebrities that have had “botched” surgeries or just from word-of-mouth which often raises much concern for patients who are interested in undergoing surgery. Regardless of the type of procedure you decide to have, I believe it is important for my patients to be knowledgeable about potential risks and benefits of plastic surgery and to maintain realistic expectations. In order to ease any apprehensions you may have, I have deciphered a few common plastic surgery myths:

Plastic Surgery Myths and FactsMYTH: Plastic surgery is only for women
FACT: Over the last ten years, the once female-predominant field of plastic surgery has become more acceptable and more common for men to consider and undergo. For a variety of motivations such as staying competitive with younger applicants in today’s job market or to improve overall self-esteem, the number of cosmetic plastic surgery procedures among men continues to gain popularity.  Popular procedures for men include eyelid surgery, liposuction, and neck lifts. Even so, there are some procedures for males that are exclusive to them – the treatment for gynecomastia is one such example.

Gynecomastia is a medical term that comes from a Greek phrase meaning “woman-like breasts,” and is a common condition for an estimated 40 to 60 percent of men. Gynecomastia occurs when there is a hormone imbalance of estrogen and testosterone and can transpire in one or both breasts and can even leave breasts noticeably uneven.  Caused by heredity, disease or hormonal changes, the breast glands can increase to an unusually large size. In order to address such concerns, I perform breast reduction surgery to eliminate excess fat, glandular tissue and skin.

MYTH: Liposuction and tummy tuck surgery is a substitute for exercising and eating healthy
FACT: While liposuction, abdominoplasty, and other body contouring procedures can help you achieve personal cosmetic surgery goals, it is important to remember it should not be a substitute for weight loss or a healthy lifestyle. Post-surgery, I advise my patients to maintain proper nutrition and exercise regularly in order to preserve positive body contouring results.

MYTH: Plastic surgery is extremely expensive and unaffordable for most people
FACT: According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), over 15.1 million cosmetic procedures were performed in 2013—which means that plastic surgery is an option for a large number of people. Most individuals who undergo surgery are everyday people who are interested in boosting their self-confidence by improving their appearance.

CareCredit℠ is an 18 month plan that charges no interest as long as monthly minimum payments are successfully met, and payment is received in-full within the 18 month promotional period.

MYTH: All plastic surgeons are the same
FACT: Unless a doctor is board certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery, you may be corresponding with someone who is not a properly trained plastic surgeon. Choosing a board certified plastic surgeon is the most important step when deciding on surgery. Your surgeon should be a fully trained and board-certified plastic surgeon with many years of experience performing different procedures; just as importantly, he or she must take the time to listen to and fully understand your individual goals and desires. I welcome you to read my biography to learn more about me and my board certification credentials.
