Various Facial Plastic Surgery Procedures for Rejuvenation

Double board-certified plastic and reconstructive surgeon Dr. David Whiteman meets with each of his patients to discuss facial plastic surgery to address concerning signs of aging. Many patients do not realize that there are various options in addition to traditional facelift surgery to meet their unique concerns. Dr.  Whiteman uses his extensive surgical experience to find the best treatment to provide the most natural results.facial cosmetic surgery atlanta ga

In fact, facelift surgery can be performed on specific areas of the face for patients with moderate to minimal signs of aging. Using smaller incisions to target certain areas of the face, mini facelifts rejuvenate areas of concern for patients. A mini facelift reduces wrinkles and sagging skin without affecting the brow and eye areas. Mini facelifts can also address jowls on the lower third of the face, including the neck.

As the eyes are one of the first facial features to show signs of aging and lax skin, Dr. Whiteman can perform eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty) to smooth skin and wrinkles around the upper and/or lower eyelids.  In addition to smoothing wrinkles, lower eyelid surgery can remove under eye bags. This procedure can also be performed in combination with other treatments such as a brow lift which addresses wrinkles on the forehead.

Other procedures such as rhinoplasty (nose surgery) and chin augmentation can be performed to enhance facial aesthetics.  During rhinoplasty, the patient’s nose shape and size is sculpted to provide facial balance and a more youthful appearance. Genioplasty, or chin augmentation, can give an individual’s chin a more prominent position to balance their overall aesthetic.

Facial fillers and cosmetic injectables such as Juvéderm® and Botox® can also be used as individual anti-aging treatments and in combination with plastic surgery to maintain results. Many patients with minimal signs of aging prefer these treatments as there is no downtime.

Dr. Whiteman’s Guide to Facial Plastic Surgery: Going Beyond the Facelift

Many people automatically associate facial plastic surgery with the traditional facelift. Although facial plastic surgery does include the well-known facelift, it also includes a variety of other procedures that target very specific concerns. In fact the facelift itself can involve the traditional procedure as well as mini versions of the facelift to treat isolated cosmetic concerns of the eyes, forehead, lower face, etc.

As we age, our skin becomes lax and collagen begins to break down causing fine lines, wrinkles, and sagging facial skin. The traditional or full facelift focuses on problem areas around the cheeks, jowls, and neck. While some patients combine this procedure with other anti-aging facial procedures like the brow lift or eyelid surgery for complete facial rejuvenation, other patients seek surgery before a procedure of that extent is necessary. These patients focus on their problem areas as they notice them. Some signs of aging can be repaired with facial fillers and cosmetic injectables.  For more advanced signs of aging,  Dr. Whiteman also offers procedures like brow lift to smooth wrinkles on the forehead, mid-facelift to reduce wrinkles and refresh the middle section of the face, or neck lift (lower facelift) to eliminate sagging skin on the jowls.

Blepharoplasty (eyelid surgery) is used to eliminate signs of aging on the upper and/or lower eyelids. Eyelid surgery can be performed on the upper eyelids to reduce a hooded appearance caused by sagging eyelid skin and/or on the lower eyelids to remove fat and tissue that contributes to bags beneath the eyes. Eyelid surgery can be combined with other plastic surgery procedures or performed alone depending on the patient’s needs. Aside from helping patients look younger and more alert, some surgeons are performing migraine relief surgery in conjunction with blepharoplasty because they have better access to the muscles attributed to causing this condition. Plastic surgery patients have also experienced migraine relief through some brow lift surgery techniques and with Botox® injections.

Many facial contouring procedures provide a youthful appearance in addition to balancing facial aesthetics, though anti-aging was not their original purpose. Patients often seek otoplasty (ear surgery) to help pin back ears that are too prominent or to reduce the size of ears that are too large. Rhinoplasty (nose surgery) is used to enhance the shape and size of a patient’s nose. In fact, nose surgery can also be used to alleviate breathing problems caused by injury or birth defects, so Dr. Whiteman works to repair function first (if necessary) and then to enhance aesthetics.

In addition to balance-focused procedures like otoplasty and rhinoplasty, chin surgery (genioplasty) and the insertions of chin implants are becoming more popular. In fact according to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons 2011 statistics report, the number of patients to receive chin implant surgery increased 71% in comparison to the 2010 statistics. Chin implants are used to give the chin a more prominent position and help balance other facial features like the nose. Dr. Whiteman also employs techniques like facial liposuction, or liposuction of the double chin to add definition to a patient’s jaw line.

Dr. Whiteman performs a variety of plastic surgery procedures for the breasts and body in addition to the facial procedures he offers. iGuide Neck Lift Now Available at Southern Plastic Surgery

dr david whitemanSome patients are not ready for a facelift or neck lift. Whether you’re interested in less invasive procedures, want to touch up a previous surgery, or haven’t reached the point of aging in which a lower facelift or full neck lift is necessary, Southern Plastic Surgery’s Dr. David Whiteman now offers iGuide®. The latest in minimally invasive plastic surgery technology, iGuide® offers patients an option to restore youth to the sagging skin under the chin.

Our bodies slow down collagen production as we age, leaving our skin with less elasticity and bounce. The skin under the chin and around the neck often begins to sag, producing the “turkey wattle” neck skin we’re all familiar with. The iGuide® system offers patients an alternative to neck lift surgery that helps patients reach their aesthetic goals with minimal downtime.

Using a weaving technique to help support the soft tissues and muscles under the chin, the iGuide® produces a trampoline-like structure with active tension that lifts all the tissues as one unit. The system works through small perforations under the chin through which a percutaneous suturing support system is weaved to raise any sagging tissue.

The benefits of iGuide® include natural-looking results with minimal downtime compared to traditional neck lift surgery. Most patients are able to return to work within a few days after the procedure, while facelift patients often have multiple weeks of recovery. Depending on your cosmetic goals and the treatment area, iGuide can sometimes even be completed using only local anesthesia.

Ideal iGuide candidates include men and women with mild to moderate sagging neck skin, patients looking to reduce the amount of lax skin underneath the chin, and those who may be interested in “touching up” a previous surgery. Schedule your consultation with Dr. Whiteman to determine if iGuide® is a cosmetic option for you.
