Questions to Ask During Your Male Breast Reduction Consultation

For men ranging from teenagers to seniors, gynecomastia can be the cause of considerable embarrassment and frustration. Even if their breast enlargement isn’t causing any physical distress, larger-than-normal male breasts can take a serious toll on a guy’s self-esteem and ability to feel comfortable in his own skin. This is why I perform male breast reduction surgery on patients of nearly all ages. Male breast reduction allows me to remove excess tissue to reduce the male breast. I can even use fat removed during the procedure to enhance the pectoral muscles to create a more manly physique.

male breast reduction surgery consultation informationLike any other cosmetic surgery procedure, male breast reduction requires planning and preparation. It’s important to take your pre-surgery consultation seriously and do plenty of research in the lead-up to your initial appointment. So think long and hard about your specific aesthetic issues and what you hope to achieve through male breast reduction. In order to help everyone maximize the potential of their male breast reduction, I have recommended some simple, essential questions to ask your plastic surgeon during your male breast reduction consultation.

  • What board certifications have you earned?
  • Are you certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery?
  • How much experience do you have performing male breast reduction surgery?
  • Can I see before-and-after photos from some of your past male breast reduction patients?
  • Am I a good candidate for male breast reduction?
  • How long will it take to see my final male breast reduction results?
  • Will my surgery require a hospital stay and, if so, at which hospitals do you have hospital privileges?
  • Will I have scarring after my procedure?
  • How should I prepare in the days and weeks leading up to my male breast reduction?
  • How much recovery time will I need following my surgery?

I know that most patients will likely have more specific questions unique to their situation. However, these questions can provide an excellent baseline from which to begin. To help get the most out of your consultation phase, do your research and come prepared when you meet face to face with your board-certified plastic surgeon. Cosmetic Surgery FAQ’s with Dr. David Whiteman

As a board-certified plastic surgeon, part of my job is helping educate my patients about the various cosmetic procedures that I perform. Patient education is an integral part of the plastic surgery process. That’s why I’m always happy to answer any questions my patients have about various cosmetic surgery procedures and treatments available at Southern Plastic Surgery. By sharing certain questions I have received, my goal is to both inform and encourage others not to be shy if they have questions of their own. This week I’m fielding questions about some of my most in-demand cosmetic procedures: male breast reduction, mommy makeovers, facelifts & mini facelifts.

best-atlanta-plastic-surgeonDear Dr. Whiteman,

I’m a guy who has been dealing with the embarrassment of enlarged breasts for years. After recently hearing about it for the first time, I am very interested in male breast reduction. My question is: if I undergo this procedure, can my man boobs grow back down the road?

Sincerely,
“D”

Dear “D”,

Enlarged breasts in men, known as gynecomastia, is often caused by a hormonal issue that leads to excess breast tissue. Instead of attacking the symptoms, male breast reduction treats the root cause of gynecomastia by surgically removing the extra breast tissue. Because of this, results from male breast reduction can last a lifetime. However, it’s vital that you follow your surgeon’s post-surgery recommendations closely in order to maintain your male breast reduction results. Gynecomastia can reoccur as a result of steroid use, abuse of recreational drugs, certain medical conditions, or even considerable weight gain.

Dear Dr. Whiteman,

In your opinion, when is the right time to undergo a mommy makeover? Do I have to be a mommy first?

Sincerely,
“R”

Dear “R”,

You do not have to be a mommy to undergo a mommy makeover, but there are other considerations to be aware of before having your surgery. For starters, it’s important to remember that a mommy makeover consists of three body contouring procedures (a tummy tuck using my Scarpa fascia waist enhancement technique, liposuction, and a cosmetic breast surgery) and patients should not expect considerable weight loss after a mommy makeover. I advise my patients reach their goal weight before undergoing their procedure. Additionally, you should not consider a mommy makeover if you plan to become pregnant in the future, as pregnancy can negatively affect or even reverse the results of your procedure.

Dear Dr. Whiteman,

I have begun to do some preliminary research about facelifts. Can you detail the difference between a full facelift and a mini facelift?

Sincerely,
“B”

Dear “B”,

Both a full facelift and a mini facelift (known as a rapid recovery lift) can help rejuvenate your appearance by tightening and smoothing facial skin. They differ in the degree to which they treat facial aging. Full facelifts are intended to provide more comprehensive rejuvenation to multiple areas of the face, whereas the mini facelift is specifically intended for patients who are showing early signs of aging in the lower third part of the face (including the neck, mid-face area, and jowls). During a consultation, I will explain the differences between these procedures in detail, including their respective recovery times required, to help determine which procedure is best for you.

I hope you found this helpful and informative. If you have a question of your own, don’t hesitate to contact me, Dr. David Whiteman at Southern Plastic Surgery today. The Most Common Areas for Male Plastic Surgery

Over the past few years, one of the most prominent trends I have noticed is a sizable increase in the demand for male plastic surgery. Men of all ages, from baby boomers trying to look younger and more refreshed, to guys who seek to rid themselves of unwanted body fat are finally beginning to realize the incredible potential of cosmetic plastic surgery. In my experiences with male patients, it’s clear that men and women often pursue cosmetic surgery for similar reasons: to increase their self-esteem and quality of life by achieving a rejuvenated, fit, and younger-looking appearance. To help guys understand the various ways cosmetic surgery can help, I have highlighted a few of the most common areas for male plastic surgery.

The Most Common Areas for Male Plastic Surgery

Male Plastic Surgery for the Face

Looking youthful can be a major component to staying ahead in an increasingly younger and more competitive workforce. A facelift can tighten and smooth the facial skin to treat wrinkles and rejuvenate the cheeks, jowls, and neck. Some men may prefer more subtle results that can be achieved through a mini facelift. Blepharoplasty, or eyelid surgery, has become increasingly more in-demand with guys. By removing excess skin and fat deposits from the upper and/or lower eyelids, blepharoplasty is able to provide a refreshed, more rested look to men who suffer from “tired eyes”.

Male Plastic Surgery for the Body

Many guys strive to maintain the cut, athletic physique from their youth as they age, but this can be difficult as stubborn fat begins to accumulate in the abdomen, back, and the flanks (or love handles). With this in mind, it’s no surprise that liposuction is the most popular cosmetic plastic surgery performed on men. Liposuction can surgically remove stubborn fat from areas all over the body including the abdomen, hips, love handles, and more that may not be treatable with diet and exercise alone. If the patient prefers, I also perform fat transfer injections in which the fat removed during lipo is used to sculpt other areas of the body like the abdomen, pectoral muscles, or face.

Male Breast Reduction

Men of all ages may suffer from gynecomastia, otherwise known as male breast enlargement. Although it may not be damaging to a man’s health, gynecomastia can severely impact the confidence and body image of guys ranging from adolescents to fully mature adults. I perform male breast reduction for patients who want to flatten their chest contour and create a more masculine physique.

This is merely the tip of the iceberg. From facial and body contouring procedures, to post-weight loss surgery, to non-surgical facial rejuvenation treatments, guys have more options than ever to turn back the clock and improve their appearance. But the first step for any aesthetic alteration is a consultation with a board-certified plastic surgeon. During your consultation, we will discuss your aesthetic needs, goals, and expectations to determine which procedure is the best fit for you.
