Ask Dr. Whiteman: How to Customize a Mommy Makeover

There are a number of reasons why the mommy makeover has remained so popular over the years. One of the reasons is the comprehensive body contouring results this combination surgery is able to provide patients. Another reason is the customizability a mommy makeover allows patients to have. During a mommy makeover procedure, I perform a tummy tuck (using my Scarpa fascia technique for the waist narrowing), liposuction, and a cosmetic breast surgery. Part of what I love about performing mommy makeovers is helping each individual patient find the procedure options that will help them achieve the rejuvenated appearance they desire. But this requires the patient to fully understand all of their options. That’s why I am taking some time to answer common questions about how patients can get the most out of their mommy makeovers through customization.

david m whiteman mdDear Dr. Whiteman,

I’m having a hard time choosing between a breast lift and a breast reduction as part of my mommy makeover. Which would you recommend?

Sincerely,
“H”

Dear “H”,

This is a very common question; however, there is no “correct” answer. To determine which cosmetic breast surgery option you should undergo, you must first determine what benefits you are trying to achieve. A breast lift can improve the breast contour by addressing sagging or drooping breasts. During surgery, excess skin is removed and the breasts are reshaped and lifted to provide perkier, younger-looking breasts. A breast reduction is designed to reduce the overall size and volume of the breasts by removing excess tissue, fat, and skin. It is not uncommon to perform both procedures at the same time if that is the patient’s preference.

Dear Dr. Whiteman,

In your opinion, what areas should a patient focus on for liposuction during their mommy makeover?

Sincerely,
“B”

Dear “B”,

That’s totally up to you. This will depend on your specific problem areas and if they have enough fat to be removed with liposuction. While it’s true that most mommy makeover procedures involve using liposuction to remove unwanted fat, the areas treated with lipo vary significantly from patient to patient. Generally, the most common areas for liposuction include the hips, abdomen, legs, buttocks, or arms.

Dear Dr. Whiteman,

Are there any mommy makeover options that can lead to shorter recovery times?

Sincerely,
“S”

Dear “S”,

Regardless of which procedure options you end up selecting, your mommy makeover recovery will be essentially the same. However, by combining procedures, a mommy makeover allows patients to reduce their overall downtime for recovery, no matter which surgery options they ultimately choose. The most important thing is finding the treatment options that will best help you attain the new body contour that you want.

What Can and Cannot be Accomplished with a Tummy Tuck

For individuals who experience loose or stretched skin and the appearance of a “pooch” on their abdomen, a tummy tuck can be just what the doctor ordered. Regardless of whether this skin laxity is a result of considerable weight gain and loss, pregnancy, or natural changes that occur over time, it can be impossible to improve the appearance of your tummy with diet and exercise alone. During a tummy tuck (using my signature Scarpa fascia technique for waist enhancement), I am able to remove excess skin and fat from the abdomen, while tightening the underlying abdominal muscles to provide a flatter, more toned belly. Still, there are limits to what this procedure can do for patients. Continue reading for more details on what can and cannot be accomplished with a tummy tuck.

What Can and Cannot be Accomplished with a Tummy Tuck

A tummy tuck can… help women regain their pre-baby bodies following pregnancy. Because of the strain put on a woman’s abdomen over the course of her pregnancy, the skin and abdominal muscles can become loose and require tightening after childbirth. This is especially true for women who have experienced multiple pregnancies. Tummy tuck surgery can help restore their pre-pregnancy figure.

A tummy tuck cannot… help patients lose a considerable amount of weight. While it’s true that fat is sometimes removed during the procedure, the amount of total fat and skin removed during a tummy tuck doesn’t weigh very much. A tummy tuck is considered a body contouring procedure, not weight loss surgery. This is why I advise my tummy tuck patients to reach their ideal weight before undergoing their surgery.

A tummy tuck can… be a major component of a mommy makeover. Mommy makeovers are combination procedures designed to provide even more comprehensive body contouring results by combining a tummy tuck with liposuction and cosmetic breast surgery. The ability for patients to customize each procedure to their unique needs is part of what makes the mommy makeover so popular.

A tummy tuck cannot… be used to treat larger hernias. Although a tummy tuck can have the ability to treat smaller ventral or umbilical hernias by repairing the abdominal wall, larger hernias will likely still require a visit to a general surgeon.

I believe a tummy tuck can be a legitimately life-changing procedure for many patients, both male and female. However, when considering cosmetic surgery it is always important to gain a thorough understanding of your desired procedure and to keep your expectations realistic. What to Expect from Your Mommy Makeover Recovery

In recent years, I have noticed the continual growth and popularity of the mommy makeover. By combining a tummy tuck (using my Scarpa fascia technique for the waist), liposuction, and a cosmetic breast surgery, my mommy makeover is able to provide substantial body contouring results for women trying to regain their pre-baby bodies. Despite its popularity, there are still many of my patients don’t understand what is involved with the mommy makeover. This is especially true of the expected recovery associated with this combination procedure.

There is a common misconception that mommy makeover recovery will be especially taxing for patients due to the comprehensive nature of undergoing three procedures at once. In my experience, the opposite is true. My patients are generally very happy with the added benefits of combining their procedures.

  • Since the three procedures are performed simultaneously, you will only have to go through one recovery process instead of recovering from your first procedure and then beginning the process all over again for your second and third ones.
  • This also means cutting costs by only having to pay hospital fees like anesthesia and surgical fees once instead of three times.
  • The mommy makeover is an outpatient procedure, meaning patients will not require a hospital stay.

Check out the video below where I explain the recovery timetable for patients following their mommy makeover.

One of the great things about a mommy makeover is its ability to give each patient the opportunity to customize her treatment to her unique aesthetic goals. However, this freedom also requires more thorough planning and consultation in order to help determine the surgical path that is best to help you achieve the results you desire. So do your research, weigh your options, and consult with a board-certified plastic surgeon who will help come up with the right treatment plan for you.
