What’s New at Southern Plastic Surgery?

As we transition into fall, the idea of change can come to the forefront of our minds as the kids are back in school, we gear up for seasonal sports and prepare for upcoming holidays.  When we grow older, our bodies start to respond more to the effects of gravity and accumulated damage that we acquire from long days spent in the sun.  These effects tend to also make ourselves look more aged than we really are.  In recent years, nonsurgical skincare treatments have shown that you can achieve younger-looking results and prolong the need for extensive surgical procedures.  This month, we’re featuring two of our newest nonsurgical and surgical procedure additions: Kybella™ nonsurgical fat reduction for the double chin and the Grammy Makeover.

Kybella™

A hot topic in the newest nonsurgical fat reduction conversation is the brand new, FDA-approved facial rejuvenation treatment – Kybella™.  Specifically promoted to treat the fat that accumulates below the chin, or a double chin as you may know it as, Kybella™ is made of a naturally-occurring substance already in our bodies, called deoxycholic acid (this molecule helps the body breakdown and absorb dietary fat).   During a short, 15-20 minute series of injections into the fat below your chin, Kybella™ nonsurgical fat reduction starts to work by destroying the fat cells so they can no longer accumulate fat.  So after treatment, you’ll see improved, younger-looking contours and a slimmer profile.

Grammy Makeover

Often patients question how they can fit facial plastic surgery procedures into their schedules, and their budgets.  While some procedures don’t require as much downtime as you would think (we’re talking days and weeks, not months), combination procedures may be something you’ve never even considered.  Our newest procedure, the Grammy makeover is similar to the Mommy makeover, only this time it includes even more anti-aging options by adding facial procedures to this a-la-carte procedure.  Where a Mommy makeover focuses on the breast and body, the Grammy makeover combines face, breast and body contouring procedures in one comprehensive, custom-tailored surgical plan for our more mature patients.

When you combine procedures at the same time, you’re reducing the number of times you’re required to be in the hospital (one time versus going several times over a longer period of time) and less overall downtime (again, one recovery period verses recovery after recovery time).  The savings come into play because you’re not paying the required surgical and hospital fees for each and every procedure.  Instead, when you have a combination procedure like a Mommy or Grammy makeover, you only pay those fees once.  This month, we are extending our Beauty in All Shades offer where you can receive 10% OFF hospital facility fees and anesthesia for any surgery completed by September 30th, 2015!  This special only applies to non-insurance cases and is available as we have openings.

Grammy Makeover Series: The Face

When we announced our brand new Grammy makeover procedure last month, there was so much we wanted to share (but there are far too many possibilities and we didn’t want to flood you with everything all at once)!  As a single, combination procedure made up of face, hand, arm, body and breast procedures, this “a-la-carte” type of tailored surgical plan helps restore a pre-child/grandchild body – so we thought we’d highlight each key part that makes a Grammy makeover so appealing to mature, female patients.  Since the face is often the first thing people notice about another person, let’s start with the surgical and nonsurgical features that can be included in your Grammy makeover facial plastic surgery plan.

When we consider facial plastic surgery, there are two ways that I can approach treatment.  As a double-board certified plastic surgeon with over 20 years specializing in facial procedures, I like to start by mapping out your surgical goals.  Are your eyelids hooded?  Has your chin accumulated pockets of fat creating a double chin?  Are the deep wrinkles of the forehead bothering you?  A facelift is often the first facial procedure that comes to mind when I talk to facial rejuvenation candidates.  A full facelift tightens loose facial skin and smoothes wrinkles mainly around the cheeks, neck and jowls (think lower half of the face) but sometimes that’s not necessarily enough, or for others needed at all, to achieve a younger look.  There are several facial procedures that focus on specific portions of the face to help provide overall rejuvenation.  The main facial plastic surgery procedures included in the Grammy makeover, beyond facelifts, are browlift, necklift and eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty) – we’ll get more into the nonsurgical highlights a bit later:

GMFace

Now, to cover the other part that makes up the facial side of Grammy makeovers.  Cosmetic injectables are always topping the most popular nonsurgical facial rejuvenation procedure list.  They can do everything from temporarily relax facial muscles of the forehead (like Botox® or Dysport®), plump up the lips (Restylane® Silk) and even add volume to hollowed cheeks (with Juvéderm® as an example).  Now, we have added Kybella™ for fat reduction of the chin to our menu of cosmetic injectables.  Kybella™ is the newest, and only FDA-approved, treatment for the “double chin” that can add unwanted weight and age to a person’s face.  This cosmetic injectable uses the active ingredient deoxycholic acid, which is already naturally found in the body.   Once Kybella™ is injected in the fat below the chin, it breaks down and destroys the fat accumulating cells so they are no longer able to store fat.  Several treatments may be needed to get a younger-looking profile of the chin or they can be used post-facial rejuvenation surgery as a type of “touch-up.”

Facial plastic surgery results can last a very long time as long as you do your part to maintain (like wearing your SPF, avoiding smoking and making sure you’re eating and exercising right).  In order to do this, many Grammy makeover patients tailor a post-makeover maintenance plan to incorporate nonsurgical treatments like cosmetic injectables and laser skincare procedures to help them keep their face looking young.  We’re all going to continue aging and a lot of patients like to keep a consistent routine to push back the need for more surgery until a later time.  Just depends on your overall goals!

Next time on our Grammy makeover series we will talk about the arm and hand components, so be sure to check back regularly.  If you’re interested in learning more about Grammy makeovers, mommy makeovers, or any of the other cosmetic and reconstructive procedures we offer, we encourage you to contact Southern Plastic Surgery (SPS) at 770-622-9100 with any questions you may have.  Stay connected with the SPS and me, Dr. David Whiteman on Facebook, Twitter and Google+ for more.

You Don’t Have to Be a Mom to Enjoy a Mommy Makeover

Contrary to what the name may suggest, a mommy makeover procedure isn’t only reserved for those who are mothers.  While it’s original intent was to identify a procedure that corrects common physical changes that a woman’s body experiences during/after carrying and delivering a child, similar effects can also occur to those who have never had kids themselves.  Mommy makeover surgery consists of a strategic combination of body contouring and breast procedures to remedy effects that natural aging and weight gain/loss can have on the body.  Don’t let a name fool you into thinking that it’s not an option for you, because it is.  With the many benefits combination procedures have, let’s take a look at what mommy makeovers can be for all women.

liposuction-atlanta-georgiaOriginally, mommy makeover was coined as a term to describe procedures that reverse the effects of pregnancy weight gain, weakened abdominal muscles and excess sagging breasts from breastfeeding.  Each surgical plan is customized to give each patient mommy makeover results that mirror a pre-pregnancy body; one more proportionate to the patient’s frame, without all of the excess fat and skin.  The two biggest areas of concern for moms tend to be the stomach and the breasts.  As your child grows in the womb, the abdominal muscles can stretch and become separated from the abdominal wall, commonly referred to as diastasis recti.  On top of weakened muscles, the abdomen can form a pooch and harbor excess skin and fat long after a child is born.  Achieving a contoured waistline can be hard to do with even the most steadfast diet and exercise regimen, therefore tummy tuck surgery tops the list for procedures to re-sculpt the midsection and re-tighten the muscle.

Then we take a look at the breasts.  After breastfeeding, the once enlarged breasts simply will not go back to the position they were once before; the extra skin sags and the breasts become more pendulous and less perky.  We have several options to address these concerns.  First we’ll figure out if you want to go bigger, smaller and possibly add a lift.  With a breast augmentation, we’ll use a pre-determined breast implant to increase the bust and raise the breast higher up on the body.  If you already have large breasts and want them to relieve some of the weight from your body, a breast reduction can remove the excess fat and skin.  When combining a breast reduction with a breast lift we aren’t enhancing the breasts but raising them higher in position, one more proportionate to your body’s frame.  For those that aren’t mothers, gravity takes its toll on the breasts and can cause the same pendulous effects when experiencing dramatic weight gain/loss.  The same combinations would be beneficial to helping restore the breasts to a more youthful aesthetic.

A major benefit to combination mommy makeover surgery is that you’re minimizing several key factors: recovery, time and money.  Having one comprehensive procedure versus say three (for example one procedure for a tummy tuck, another for a breast reduction and another for a breast lift) will reduce the overall amount of time you need to recover.  Less time spent in the hospital means less time spent at home recovering and quicker time getting you back to your regular schedule.  With each surgical procedure there are fees outside the cost of materials and labor like hospital stays, anesthesia, surgical fees and medications.  Each time you have a procedure these are factored into your total costs; if you have one complete procedure, those fees apply to that one procedure versus multiple.

It’s really about when the timing is right for you.  For mothers, the time should be when you’re finished having children because the same physical effects could reverse any results you’ve accomplished from your plastic surgery procedures before that point (the same goes for women who have a tendency to fluctuate in their weight gain/loss).  If you’d like to learn more details on the benefits of mommy makeover or combination procedures, don’t hesitate to contact Southern Plastic Surgery.  For the most up-to-date plastic surgery news and specials be sure to connect with me, Dr. David Whiteman, on Facebook, Twitter and Google+.
